Pilkington's Royal Lancastrian, a rare miniature 'Twiffler' vase, thrown by Edward T Radford, in orange vermillion glaze, 1cm high.Provenance:The Abraham Lomax Collection, thence by descent.Footnote:The term 'Twiffler' has been in circulation within the Pilkington Pottery since Radford was in employment as the main thrower. Lomax records them as "many small pieces being thrown" in a way to suggest and experiment with new shapes and forms under the guidance of Forsyth, who referred to them as "sketches in clay". Many shapes show the influence of Chinese vases. But calling them small pieces is somewhat of a misnomer as many are smaller than an inch, and as in this case barely a fraction of an inch. The Pilkington's Lancastrian pottery Society newsletters of March and June 2013 contain further information on these fascinating whimsical miniatures with colour plates showing a broader range of those known to exist in private collections and formerly the Monks Hall Collection in Eccles.Condition report:There is possibly a P painted to the underside of the base but not immediately evident. There is a tiny chip to the underside of the baseline, with what looks to be a small resulting hairline.
Pilkington's Royal Lancastrian, a footed dish, thrown by E.T. Radford, early 1930s, fired in a mottled vermillion orange and slightly crystalline glaze, impressed shape number 3174A, incised ETR, stamped factory mark, diameter 24.5cm, height 10cm.Provenance:The Abraham Lomax Collection, thence by descent.Condition report:Good overall condition, no chips, evident hairlines or restoration. The glazes to the central well are a little uneven in the firing.
William S Mycock for Pilkington's Royal Lancastrian, a lustre vase with birds, 1929, thrown by Radford, the swollen body (shape 160) painted with four birds in flight, scrolling border to the neck, powder blue ground, artist's and throwers' initials to base, with date cipher, 21cm.Provenance:The Abraham Lomax Collection, thence by descent.Condition report:Good overall condition, no chips, hairlines or restoration. The firing is even.

Bennett (Denton and Reddish): I am grateful for the opportunity to raise, in a short debate, the Government's failure to recommend or the Queen to award campaign medals to those who served in the Suez canal zone between 1951and 1954. I had hoped that there would be more time for the debate because many other hon. Members are concerned about the issue. I am pleased that my hon. Friend the Member for Wentworth (Mr. Healey) is present; no doubt he will hope to speak, and he has my permission and that of the Minister to do so briefly. My hon. Friend the Member for Hornchurch (Mr. Cryer) has also raised questions about the matter. I place on the record my appreciation of my constituent Mr. Davenport, who has been keeping me up to speed on the issue, and of the late Pip Newton, who led the delegation to press the case with my hon. Friend the Minister for the Armed Forces, 18 months or so ago, when my hon. Friend was a junior Minister. Mr. Newton worked extremely hard to press the campaign. I also wish to record my appreciation for Mr. Blackburn, Mr. Golder and Mr. Radford for all their work in documenting the case.2003 Daily Telegraph article - Thousands of British troops who served in the Suez canal emergency will finally be honoured, the government will announce tomorrow. The Queen has given royal assent to the issuing of a General Service Medal with a special clasp for veterans who served in Egypt from 1951-54. The MOD will spell out plans tomorrow to produce the medals. Veterans could get them as early as next month. An estimated 200,000 British troops served in the canal zone during the emergency - which preceded the Suez crisis of 1956 - and more than 300 people were killed. Campaign medals are not normally awarded more than five years after a conflict, but the prime minister, Tony Blair, has acknowledged the operation. The emergency in Oct 1951 when the Egyptian government unilaterally overturned a 1936 treaty with London that governed the number of British troops in the canal zone, triggering an anti-British guerrilla campaign. Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III, Radford conversion. 1963. Registration number AFW 995A. - Burgundy colour with tan leather original interior. - Fantastic condition - With service history, Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III manual and provenance Four speed automatic gearbox, power steering, 8 cylinder 90 degree V-configuration engine, 6.2 litres displacement, 6230cc capacity. Drum brakes servo-assisted. Mileage around 75,000. This Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III was completed in February of 1963 and supplied by Jack Barclay Ltd. 1962 saw the introduction of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III which was to be the final variant of the factory bodied standard steel saloon. The introduction of the twin headlamps was the most obvious change, but the differences did not end there. Further changes included the introduction of smaller bumper over riders and the repositioning of the front indicators and side lamps into one single unit on the front wing, resulting in an arguably more attractive appearance. Mechanically speaking the Silver Cloud III was issued with larger 9:1 compression ratio carburettors, improved power steering to aid smoother movement at parking speed and a Lucas vacuum-advance distributor to aid fuel consumption, making it almost identical in mechanical specification to the Bentley S3 Continental that was being produced at the same time.
