PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. A good signed and inscribed softcover printed small 8vo exhibition catalogue for Picasso – Peintures 1962-1963 at the Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris, from 15th January to 15th February 1964, being a first edition (Number 18, Series A) from the series of monographs published by the gallery, featuring a French text essay by Michel Leiris and over sixty images of works by Picasso, six of which are reproduced in colour. The covers feature an image of a lithograph by Picasso printed by the Mourlot Studio. Attractively signed and inscribed by Picasso to the frontispiece in six different colours of bold crayon (blue, dark green, red, orange, purple and light green), ‘Pour mon ami Frua, son ami Picasso’, also adding the place. Mougins A.M., in his hand beneath his signature. The artist has also added a further line of text in his hand, ‘Mas N. D. de Vie’, the meaning of which is not apparent although was presumably significant to the recipient. A visually appealing example of Picasso’s autograph. MAAR DORA: (1907-1997) French photographer, painter and poet, a romantic partner of Pablo Picasso (from 1935-43) and the subject of several of his portraits. A.L.S., Dora, two pages, 8vo, Rue de Savoie (Paris), 27th January n.y. (c.1960), to Hector, in French and Spanish. Maar states that it was a joy to receive her friend's good wishes and reciprocates in Spanish ('Feliz ano nuevo') and continues 'Je voulais vous telephoner mais je suis intimidee. Je pense a vous, et je prie Dieu pour vous. J'ai demande pour vous le bonheur' (Translation: 'I wanted to call you but I'm intimidated. I think of you, and I pray to God for you. I asked for your happiness'). Maar concludes her letter in Spanish, sending 'muchos carinos' (Translation 'lots of love'). One ink annotation to the base of the second page and a slight paperclip rust stain to the upper edge, otherwise VG

PICASSO & COCTEAU: PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement & COCTEAU JEAN: (1889-1963) French poet, playwright, novelist, artist, filmmaker and critic. An excellent vintage signed 4 x 6 photograph by both Picasso and Cocteau individually, the image depicting the two hugely influential figures of 20th century art engaged in conversation with Pierre Bertrand, a specialist supplier of paper for printmaking and engravings, who can be seen standing in the immediate background. Signed (‘Picasso’) by Picasso in blue ink and signed (‘Jean Cocteau’) by Cocteau in fountain pen ink, adding a small star beneath his signature, both to the lower white border. Dated 20th May 1956 to the verso. The signature of Cocteau is a touch light although remains perfectly legible. A highly desirable signed image of the two artists. VG The present photograph was signed by Cocteau and Picasso just a few months before the Spanish artist celebrated his 75th birthday with a party at Vallauris on 25th October 1956. Cocteau was amongst the close friends with whom Picasso celebrated.

Dabei erscheinen uns seine Zeichnungen zunächst wie flüchtige Skizzen, die wie rein ästhetische Selbstgespräche oder Fingerübungen anmuten und in denen die Linien und Graphismen der Farbe meist übergeordnet sind. Seine Zeichen sind niemals abstrakt, sondern von einer hohen suggestiven Kraft. Die Form erfüllt für Miró keinen Selbstzweck, sondern ist immer ein Zeichen von etwas. Und so können wir auch im vorliegenden Blatt die Andeutung dreier Figuren finden, die sich, obwohl das Blatt doch strahlendhell angelegt ist, ganz sicher unter einem nächtlichen Himmel begegnen. Betrachten wir heute rückblickend den großen Reichtum an bildnerischer Phantasie und an poetischer Erzählfreude, so scheint es ganz erstaunlich, das Mirós Lebensweg zunächst in eine völlig unkünstlerische Richtung gehen sollte: Trotz seines Studiums an der Kunstakademie von La Lonja besucht er von 1907 bis 1910 die Handelsschule in Barcelona und arbeitete später in einer Drogerie. Nach einer schweren Krankheit widmet er sich jedoch 1911 vollständig der Kunst, schreibt sich 1912 an der Academia Francese Gali ein und verlässt sie nach drei Jahren, um als Künstler zu arbeiten. Miró wird in den nächsten Jahren stark vom Fauvismus und den französischen Kubisten beeinflusst und präsentiert 1918 seine erste Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Dalmau in Barcelona. Ein Jahr später macht er seine erste Reise nach Paris und trifft Pablo Picasso, mit dem er eine enge Freundschaft knüpft. Peter Rose Pulham, British 1910-1956 - The Conjuror’s Table; oil on panel, signed and titled on the reverse 'Peter Rose Pulham The Conjuror's Table', 21.8 x 27 cm (ARR) Note: Peter Rose Pulham initially worked as a photographer, moving to Paris in the 1930s where he created celebrated photographic portraits of Pablo Picasso in his studio and discovered and became involved with the Surrealists. Examples of Pulham's work can be found in the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate collections. During his lifetime, the artist exhibited with Redfern Gallery in 1947, Hanover Gallery in 1950 and the ICA in 1952. A similar work by the artist 'Blue Paper', utilising the same brick background, was sold at Bonhams on the 27th November 2019, lot 171. Both work share an esoteric subject matter, with a precise, highly finished painting style.
