A rare set of six Nymphenburg topographical plates from an armorial service presented to the Ottoman Turkish Court, dated 1847Each superbly painted with a topographical view depicting Bavarian views, titled, signed and dated 1847 in black on the reverse, within a burnished gilt band, the rims reserved with a band of gilt foliage and scrollwork against the burgundy red ground, a gilt-edged circular reserve at the top and bottom painted with the crescent and star, and the royal arms of Bavaria, respectively, inscribed:Landshut/ gemalt von/ v. The service was likely presented in an attempt to repair a diplomatic dispute between Greece - whose monarch since independence was King Otto, the second son of King Ludwig I of Bavaria - and the Turkish Ottoman Empire. The dispute in early 1847 brought the two countries to the brink of conflict, which also threatened to draw in the European powers. The Bavarian government advised Greece to make concessions, which it did following the intervention of Austria in December 1847. The gift of these plates seems likely to have been an attempt by the Bavarian government to repair relations with the Ottoman Turks; see K. Hantschmann, Nymphenburger Porzellan 1797 bis 1857 (1996), cat. no. 279, for a discussion of the service and a list of the other nine plates, eight of which are in Bavarian museums. Gouache über Bleistift, braun laviert, mit Gold gehöht auf hellbraunem Papier. 22,5 x 15,4 cm. Unten rechts bezeichnet "-PHAON-" und "-G-M-". Um 1883. Am 2. April 1884 nahm die Opéra de Paris Charles Gounods Oper Sapho, die bereits 1851 dort uraufgeführt wurde, wieder auf. Der damalige Verwalter der Oper, François-Pierre Régnier, bat Gustave Moreau vier von insgesamt fünf Kostümen für die Hauptprotagonisten zu entwerfen (siehe Archiv, Musée Gustave Moreau, zitiert in Mathieu 1976, op. cit., Nr. 302). Moreau präsentierte Régnier schließlich 27 Aquarelle und Zeichnungen mit Kostümentwürfen, unter anderem für die Figur des Phaon, des schönen Fährmanns, den die Dichterin Sappho unglücklich liebte. Eine weitere bezeichnete Version befindet sich in der Sammlung von Louis-Antoine Prat (siehe Pierre Rosenberg: De main de maître, trois siècles de dessins français dans la collection Prat, Ausst. Kat. Ottawa, Musée des beaux-arts du Canada, 1990, Nr. 108). Der Auftrag für die Kostümgestaltung ging letztlich jedoch an Eugène Lacoste, der im Dezember 1883 zum Chef-Designer der Oper ernannt wurde. Lacoste gestaltete alle 56 Kostüme für die Aufführung. Aber schon weit vor diesem Auftrag ging für Moreau von der griechischen Dichterin Sappho eine große Faszination aus. In zahlreichen Gemälden und Aquarellen behandelte er ab 1849 dieses Ovid‘sche Sujet der Dichterin, die durch die Zurückweisung des Fährmanns Phaon unglücklich liebend verzweifelt. Mit dem Blick auf das offene Meer springt sie schließlich von einem Felsen in den Tod. Moreaus Kostümentwürfe für die Oper waren von orientalischen und griechischen Gewändern und Mustern in kräftigen, leuchtenden Farben, mit Gold verzierten Bordüren und schimmernden Pailletten beeinflusst. Als Wegbereiter des Symbolismus ließ sich Moreau in seinen Werken von mythologischen, literarischen und biblischen Sujets inspirieren. Seine Gemälde wurden von Marcel Proust bewundert und von den Symbolisten der 1880er Jahre gefeiert. Provenienz: Wohl Sammlung Roger Marx (dessen Auktion am 11./12. Landschafts- Genre- und Pferdemaler, Illustrator und Lithograph (1855 Hamburg bis 1928 Düsseldorf), zunächst ab 1870 Lehre und Tätigkeit als Lithograph, parallel Abendstudium an der Kunstgewerbeschule Hamburg, ein vierjähriges Stipendium der Stadt Hamburg ermögliche künstlerische Weiterbildung an einer Kunstschule eigener Wahl, ab 1874 neben Selbststudien 1875-79 Privatschüler von Christian Kröner in Düsseldorf, weitergebildet bei Wilhelm Camphausen, beschickte die Berliner Kunstausstellungen und den Glaspalast in München, Ausstellungen in London und Malmö sowie die Weltausstellungen St. Louis (1904) und Turin (1912), erhielt diverse Ehrungen und Medaillen, 1881-1928 Mitglied und zeitweise Vorstand im Düsseldorfer Künstlerverein "Malkasten", Mitglied der Allgemeinen Deutschen Kunstvereinigung, im Verband Deutscher Illustratoren, im Düsseldorfer Künstlerunterstützungsverein und später in der Freien Vereinigung Düsseldorfer Künstler (Sezession) und schließlich in der Düsseldorfer "Künstlervereinigung von 1899", darüber hinaus Mitglied der Künstlergruppen "Laetitia" und "Orient", tätig in Düsseldorf, Quelle: Thieme-Becker, Bruckmann "Lexikon der Düsseldorfer Malerschule", Boetticher, Dressler, "Der neue Rump" und Wikipedia.
