Schulz - photogr. Atelier Trier Dietrichstr. No. 216" sowie handschriftliche Bleistiftnotizen "Frl. v. Karl and Jenny Marx - two CDV studio portraits, London, circa 1875, and Trier, presumably around 1881 Karl and Jenny Marx - two CDV studio portraits, London, circa 1875, and Trier, presumably around 1881Half-length portrait of Karl Marx in a fine suit with waistcoat, his monocle hanging from his neck, on the reverse maker’s inscription "Mayall - 224, Regent Street London, W. And 914, King's Road, Brighton" and handwritten pencil notes "Karl Marx!" and "18/2 Ord.". Dimensions 10 x 6.3 cm. Half portrait of Jenny Marx in a black mourning dress, on the reverse maker’s inscription "C. Schulz - photogr. Atelier Trier Dietrichstr. No. 216" and handwritten pencil notes "Frl. v. Westphal" and "18/2 Ord.". The lower edge cut back, dimensions 9.6 x 6.3 cm. The photograph of Karl Marx comes from a series of studio photographs taken by John Mayall jr.The juvenile looks of Jenny Marx in the photograph and the fact that the photographer Carl Schulz did not take up business in Trier before approx. 1865 suggest that she was not Karl Marx’s wife Johanna Bertha Julie Jenny von Westphalen (1814 – 1881), but rather her third daughter Jenny Julia Eleanor Marx -Aveling (1855 – 1898), probably in mourning dress because of her mother’s death in 1881. Provenance: From a German private collection. Acquired in October 1984 from the Heidelberg antiquarian bookshop Dr. Helmut Tenner, together with a photocopy of the respective catalogue page (lot number 18).Comes with a letter of the Institute for Marxism-Leninism in the Central Committee of the SED dated 10 October 1984 and addressed to the antiquarian bookshop Tenner with the request to approach the (tr.) "lucky owner of the photograph mentioned under No. 18 of the auction catalogue" and ask for a (tr.) "high-quality photocopy" and to allow (tr.) "one of our employees to have a look at the original some time".Two pages, size A4 with letter head, signed by the then assistant director of the institute, Prof. Dr. Heinrich Gemkow (1928 – 2017).Condition: II -

Handwritten by Engels in ink on all four pages. The header reading ""122 Regents Park Road N.W. - London 12 Nov. 1890"", addressed to ""Herrn Adolf Riefer in Saarburg i/Lothr."". ""when she, on the death of my friend Marx, gave me the honour & pleasure of accepting to run my household. Lot 37

A SPINACH-GREEN JADE GUI-FORM CENSER AND COVER, QIANLONG PERIODChina, 1736-1795. Superbly carved with deep rounded sides raised on a flared foot, flanked by two wide upright S-shaped loop handles, the domed cover surmounted by an intricately carved and pierced finial in the form of a ferocious dragon, above a central aperture to the interior of the cover. Finely carved around the exterior of the bowl and cover with archaistic taotie mask designs interspersed by cross-hatched lozenges, C- and S-scrolls, and an angular scroll, the foot encircled by a band of ruyi heads. The translucent stone is of a deep spinach-green color with dark specks, russet veins, and cloudy inclusions.Provenance: Robin and Fay Marx, Weybridge, Surrey, United Kingdom, acquired before 1954 and thence by descent in the family. Copies of four old insurance valuations from John Sparks Ltd., each confirming the dating above, accompany this lot. The fourth and last valuation is dated 28 January 1965, signed by Peter Vaughan (Director of John Sparks Ltd.), and states a value for the present lot (no. 29) of GBP 2,000 or approx. EUR 60,500 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Robin Marx (1923-1975) was a merchant banker with an erudite passion for Chinese jades. By the early 1950s, he had built an impressive collection with the help and guidance of celebrated London dealer Peter Sparks of John Sparks Ltd. Robin was a distant relative of the influential economist Karl Marx. He bequeathed a significant part of his library to the British Museum, a fellow employee of his was Ian Fleming, and he regularly shared a box at the races with Princess Margaret. For decades after Robin's death, his wife Fay kept his collection on loving display in the family home. A part of the collection was sold by Christie's on 16 December 2022 after Fay's passing in 2021, including two pieces which were also included in the John Sparks insurance valuations: A spinach-green jade brushpot, Qianlong period, initially valued at GBP 250 (no. 8) and sold by Christie's for EUR 56,700, and lot 137, a 'dragon' jar and cover, Jiajing mark and period, initially valued at GBP 375 (no. 37) and sold by Christie's for EUR 94,500, lot 132. Condition: Good condition with minor wear and minuscule nibbling. The jade with natural fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks.Weight: 1,134 g Dimensions: Width 24.3 cm Expert's note: This censer is notable for its bold, well-proportioned form as well as its exquisitely carved archaistic taotie mask decorations and magnificent, pierced, coiled dragon-form finial. During the eighteenth century, some of the finest jade carvings found their inspiration in archaic artifacts collected and treasured by the emperors. The decorative motifs on the body of the present censer draw inspiration from archaic bronze vessels. Roger Keverne explains in his 1991 publication, Jade, pp. 164, that spinach-green incense burners of this type were found in the Imperial palace.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 21 March 2019, lot 1110 Price: USD 555,000 or approx. In Lichtdruck-Faksimiles nach Frühdrucken mit Hilfe der Max-Kade-Foundation Inc. New York für den Stuttgarter Galerieverein herausgegeben, 1956, Bd. I, S. 143 u. 145). - Vgl. für das Gesamtwerk: Bartsch VII, 224, 80. Brunet V, 933. - Mit handschr. Titel "Illustrations of Der Weiss Krug by Hans Burgmair. Collection of 50 woodcuts. 1775. On different papers, vergé and laid paper. Each trimmed to the border line and mounted in spots on album pages. Late 19th c. half leather with gilt on spine and covers, leather corners, marbled boards and marbled edges (somewhat rubbed, insignificantly shaded with glue). - With various, unidentified and partly difficult to discern watermarks. II.", framed in lithographed title-page border by Strixner after Dürer. - Along with Theuerdank, Der Weiß Kunig is one of the two autobiographical writings of Emperor Maximilian I. Unlike Theuerdank, Der Weiß Kunig, whose author was Maximilian's secretary Marx Treitzsaurwein, remained unfinished during the Emperor's lifetime. It was not until the 18th century that the original woodcuts with illustrations by Hans Burkmair the Elder and Leonhard Beck appeared in Graz, the work was printed in 1775 with 237 plates. - Paper browned and partly a little bit brown-stained. 1 leaf with ink spot.
