The wax balls are made from tallow and baryta sulphate and are designed to mark the target without injury. Devillers founded the ~Societie L~Assaut au Pistolet~ in 1904^ with rules drawn up for this novel sport. One year later the society had over a hundred members including the French ex-President Casimir Perier^ Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon and the great Anglo-American pistol shot and marksman^ Walter Winans. Popularity continued and the sport was demonstrated in London in 1908^ where it gained the mythology of its part in the Olympics held in White City. In fact^ a number of the world~s finest revolver and pistol shots were persuaded by Winans to come to London and participate in a demonstration at the Franco-British Exhibition. The fashion continued and soon after the Carnegie Sword and Pistol Club in New York and the New York Athletic Club sponsored competitions.¦

Zunächst unter dem Titel „Loch“ 1961 und später auch „2 Schafsköpfe (Loch)“ 1975 und 1976 als Edition unter „Painting Version 1–90“ (Schellmann 186 u. 187) herausgegeben. Joseph Beuys experimentiert bereits früh mit Ölfarben, darunter gibt es mehrere Werke mit ähnlich dichter, dunkler Farbigkeit. Das Loch, die Öffnung, ist die entscheidende Idee, die Beuys 1981 auch als Wanddurchbruch in der Kunsthalle Düsseldorf realisiert. First published under the title “Loch” in 1961 and later also as “2 Schafsköpfe (Loch)” in 1975 and in 1976 as an edition named “Painting Version 1-90” (Schellmann 186 and 187). Joseph Beuys experimented with oil paints from early on, among them we find several works with similarly dense, dark colors. The hole, the opening, is the decisive idea that Beuys also realized in 1981 in form of a wall breakthrough at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. By forcing a painted or brick-built surface open, the underlying reality connects with a work of art or an exhibition space, both of which merely reflect on reality. Vielfach inszeniert er sich selbst in Portraits, wobei er die unterschiedlichsten Rollen und Posen einnimmt. Im Zentrum steht hierbei immer: der Maler Meese. Dass er in seiner Malerei keiner akademischen Tradition folgt und sich vielmehr von der Lust an Provokation sowie kindlichen und zugleich egomanen Gefühlen leiten lässt, führt zu seiner unverwechselbaren, dichten Formensprache. Aus seinen Arbeiten spricht auch hier eine Faszination für Diktatoren, hierarchische Befehlshaber, Heldenepen oder faschistische Symbolik, die sowohl malerisch umgesetzt wird als auch in seinen Bildtiteln und -beschriftungen zum Ausdruck kommt. Häufig schlüpft er in die Rolle einer historischen, mythologischen oder Märchenfigur, wobei diese bildfüllend auf der Leinwand erscheint und von Textfragmenten und Symbolen begleitet wird. "Selbstportrait mit kranker Figur." steht in eben dieser Linie von Portraits und zeugt von einer Beschäftigung des Künstlers mit der Mythologie des Teufels (angedeutet durch die Zahlen 666) sowie einer Auseinandersetzung mit Karl Marx (der auf der Rückseite des Werkes erwähnt wird) und dem Kommunismus. Beide Themen verbindet die Farbe Rot, die in unserem Gemälde dominiert und Bedrohlichkeit ausstrahlt.
