WORLD WAR TWO BATTLE OF MONTE CAMINO MILITARY MEDAL, Immediate Award, 2615780 L'CPL J EDWARDS G DS London Gazette 23 March 1944. Guardsman Joseph Edwards, 6th Battalion Grenadier Guards was recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal but was instead decorated with the Military Medal. The recommendation, which when granted was n signed by Field Marshall Earl Alexander (then C-I-C 15th Army Group) reads: "This Section Commander found himself under H.G. fire from five different directions at once. By his excellent control of the section two of these were rapidly silenced but three of his men were hit. Under heavy fire from the remaining H.G.s he went to their aid and by his immediate attention was responsible for saving the lives of two. These he subsequently helped down the hill and returned bringing with him on his own initiative reinforcements. Later on the same day while his Section was held down to the ground with fire he found his men running short of ammunition. In spite of being wounded himself he crawled round four section posts collecting ammunition from casualties and delivering it to his men before consenting to go back and get his own wound dressed. His great leadership, gallantry and outstanding courage were undoubtedly the cause of his men remaining in an extremely difficult position."

Kemeys-Tynte to front pastedown, later blind-stamped calf gilt, a little rubbed, 12mo First published in 1639 this appears to be an unrecorded edition of a scarce collection of suggestive verses. This copy appears to lack a preliminary leaf, possibly blank. (1)

First edition, second issue copy, using the sheets from the unauthorised first issue, the title page a cancel bearing the imprint of Humphrey Mosley, the title with the Thomas Walkley imprint removed and replaced. Marshall, title within ornamental woodcut border, small stain to foremargin of early leaves, contemporary ownership name inscriptions of Mary, Bridgett and Mary Jocelyn to frontispiece recto and neatly written manuscript poem to final blank verso, recent marbled boards with printed paper label to spine, 12mo Wing M357. The apparently original and contemporary manuscript poem, no doubt written by a Royalist sympathiser shortly after the execution of King Charles I in 1649 consists of two quatrains. Indeed, the royalist publisher, Humphrey Moseley had secretly commissioned a portrait of David with the face of King Charles I for this second edition of a translation that had no political commentary on its first appearance a decade earlier. 'O England England / take heed of fatall blowes / ffor what is still to come / as yett ther's noe man knowes / Smite not thy brest / but be thou ready armed / with faithfull love / thou never shall be harmed'.
