Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "U.S.S. New Jersey" Signed lower right. Oil on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the U.S.S. New Jersey. Still active in the 1980's, the U.S.S. New Jersey was commissioned on 23 May 1943 with Captain Carl F. Holden in command. The U.S.S. New Jersey saw her first duty during the assault on the Marshall Islands in 1944. She began her storied career as a flagship 4 February 1944 for Admiral Raymond A. Spruance Commander, 5th Fleet. The U.S.S. New Jersey's next war cruise 13 April - 4 May 1944 began and ended at Majuro, but carried her to New Guinea, the Marianas and the Palau Island group. She continued to be an effective force throughout the "island hopping" campaign in the Pacific Theater, serving as flagship for Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey's 3rd Fleet. She guarded carriers in their strikes on Formosa, Okinawa, Luzon, Hong Kong, and Iwo Jima. The U.S.S. New Jersey was then overhauled before sailing as flagship for the 5th Fleet until War's end. The U.S.S. New Jersey began her Korean career at Wonsan 20 May 1951 with a devastating shore bombardment. Later, she participated in a deadly five hour bombardment of Kansong on 16 October 1951. It seemed as if every salvo found its mark. She leveled ten artillery positions and inflicted some five hundred enemy casualties. Thus far, the U.S.S. New Jersey has earned the Navy Unit Commendation for Vietnam service, two Battle Stars for service in Vietnam, four for the Korean Conflict, and nine for World War II. Image Size: 13.5 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 20.5 x 21.75 in. Unframed. (B11125)

Paul Calle (1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (B. 1961) "1970s - Space Stations - Skylab" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands The 20th Century Series 60c Space Stations Orbit Earth stamp issued November 15, 1999. After man's historic walk on the moon in July 1969, the 1970s began a decade of unprecedented space exploration, with the United States and Russia developing both manned and unmanned spacecraft. On April 19, 1971, the USSR launched Salyut 1, the first prototype space station ever to be placed in orbit. Salyut 1 was used primarily as an observing platform to gather information on earth resources, meteorology, astronomy and space medicine. It also studied the effects of prolonged weightlessness. On May 14, 1973, NASA launched its own orbiting space station named Skylab. Its purpose was to allow astronauts to double the time they were spending in space, as well as study the effects of space on the human body, and enable clearer observations of the sun, moon, stars and planets. Image Size: 10.25 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 13 x 23 in. Unframed. (B16581 / B16582)
Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Battle of Midway - U.S. Aircraft" Oil on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Covers for the Marshall Islands Battle of Midway 50¢ SBD Dauntless Dive Bombers and 50¢ Japanese Carrier Akagi stamps issued June 4, 1992. On June 3, 1942, American aircraft spotted the Japanese attack force approximately 600 miles west of Midway. THe battle began the next day, when 26 torpedo planes and dive bombers from Midway arose to form the initial line of defense. All but nine were lost, and the first wave of enemy aircraft wreaked havoc on island installations. But a contingent of aircraft from the carrier U.S.S. Enterprise bore down upon the Japanese force, demolishing three carriers and one heavy cruiser with explosive efficiency. Image Size: 13.75 x 16.75 in. Overall Size: 24.75 x 16.75 in. Unframed. Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "V-1 Bombardment of England" Oil on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50¢ V-1 Bombardment of England Begins 1944 stamp issued June 13, 1994. The first dropped out of the English sky on June 13, 1944, only a week after D-Day. Hitler called the V-1 Flying Bombs and V-2 Rockets Vergeltungs-waffen -- "reprisal weapons." They were intended to create terror among the civilian population rather than destroy military targets. A simple pulse-jet engine powered the V-1s, which the British quickly nicknamed "buzz bombs" or "doodlebugs" because their throbbing buzz was "like a Model T Ford going uphill." When the sound stopped, the V-1 fell and within 15 seconds its 1,875-pound warhead exploded. The British defense was a concentration of ack-ack guns and straight-shooting fighter pilots. Between June 1944 and March 1945, although nearly 4,000 V-1s were shot down, over 6,000 people died and nearly 18,000 were injured by Hitler's reprisal weapon. Image Size: 13.5 x 16.75 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 20.75 in. Unframed. (B14733)
Steve Ferguson (B. 1946) "1900 - Original Zeppelin" Signed lower left. Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 33? 100th Anniversary of the Zeppelin - Original Zeppelin stamp issued May 11, 2000. Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin's first airship, Luftschiff Zeppelin (LZ1), made its maiden 18-minute flight on July 2, 1900. Measuring 420 feet long and 38 feet wide, the dirigible had a maximum speed of 16 mph. Considered under-powered, it was scrapped the follow year - but not before giving rise to a series of successors. On November 16, 1909, the world's first airline, Deutsche Luftschiffahrts AG (DELAG), was founded. Headquartered at Frankfurt, Germany, DELAG trained airship pilots and operated Zeppelin passenger flights. Following the outbreak of World War I, Zeppelin's airships were used by Germany's military. Originally intended as reconnaissance vessels, Zeppelins were launched in January, 1915, for bombing raids against London. Image Size: 13.5 x 18.5 in. Overall Size: 15 x 20 in. Unframed. (B16812)
Steve Ferguson (B. 1946) "1936 - Hindenburg" Signed lower left. Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 33c 100th Anniversary of the Zeppelin - Hindenburg stamp issued May 11, 2000. Over 804 feet long and 135 feet wide, the Hindenburg (LZ129) was the world's largest airship. Four 1,100-hp engines provided a maximum speed of 84 mph. On May 6, 1936, the Hindenburg left Germany for the United States with its first paying passengers. The magnificent airship offered round trips at a very reasonable $720 per person. On May 6, 1937 - exactly one year after the Hindenburg began transocean service - disaster struck. As the Hindenburg approached the mooring mast at Lakehurst, New Jersey, its tail section burst into flames. Soon the entire ship was engulfed as the blazing inferno consumed the Zeppelin's hydrogen gas stores - claiming the lives of 36 passengers and crew. The Hindenburg's fiery demise foretold the end of the Zeppelin era. Image Size: 13.5 x 18.5 in. Overall Size: 15 x 20 in. Unframed. (B16811)
Paul Calle (1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (B. 1961) "The Media Creates Indelible Memories" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands The 20th Century series 60? The Media Create Indelible Memories stamp issued July 15, 1998. When Germany's Hindenburg burst into flames upon arrival at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937, news of the tragedy quickly spread. Throughout the nation, radio programs were interrupted to bring listeners eyewitness accounts of the disaster. Newspapers published photographs of the great airship being consumed by a spectacular ball of fire. Theaters put viewers "up close and personal" to the catastrophe through Movietone? news clips. No one who learned about it via the radio, newspaper or newsreels would ever forget the Hindenburg tragedy. This example of the evolution of the media into a "real time" delivery of the news underscores its development in the 1930s. In the decades to come, the media's ability to record and report events -- as they happened -- revolutionized people's perceptions of the world. Image Size: 9.75 x 15.25 in. Overall Size: 13.25 x 20 in. Unframed. (B16076 / B16077)
Robert Seabeck (American, B. 1945) "1965 Mustang" Signed lower left. Mixed Media on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60? 1964 1/2 Mustang Convertible stamp issued June 4, 1996. Ford proclaimed its new Mustang had "the look, the fire, the flavor of the great European road cars," meeting the demands of postwar babyboomers, many of whom were sports car enthusiasts. Ford had anticipated the market potential for a fairly small personal car and introduced the Mustang in mid-1964. Within two years, a million Mustangs were sold, setting an example for the entire automobile industry. Just a few weeks after its launch at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964, a Mustang convertible arrived in Indiana to pace the Memorial Day "500" race. The first Mustangs featured a long-hood/short-deck body style, as well as bucket seats. The 1964 1/2 Mustang convertible sold for $2,614, while the base price for hardtops was $2,368. Mustangs also included a floor-mounted gear shift and a racing-style steering wheel. Image Size: 7.5 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 15 x 22.25 in. Unframed. (B15394)
Robert Seabeck (American, B. 1945) "1967 Camaro" Signed lower left. Mixed Media on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60? 1967 Camaro stamp issued September 1, 1998. The 1960s witnessed the birth of the muscle cars. Manufacturers and consumers had only one thing in mind when it came to these unique automobiles -- raw power. The mighty '67 Camaro? perfectly symbolizes this era. Built for speed, the top-of-the-line Super Sport? model was specially constructed to blow the doors off of the Chevy? competition -- the Ford Mustang. A pulse-racing 295 horsepower was generated by its 350-cubic-inch V-8 engine. Best of all, this remarkably handsome muscle coupe had the styling and chassis to match its potent engine output. The public responded enthusiastically, purchasing 220,000 cars in the very first year. Chevrolet proved to the world that it possessed more than enough horsepower, features and styling in its sports cars to "rein" in Ford's Mustang. Image Size: 7.75 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 15 x 22.5 in. Unframed. (B15993)
Dean Ellis (1920 - 2009) "Life of JFK / PT109" Signed lower right. Tempera on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the First Day Cover for the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55? PT-109 stamp issued May 29, 1995. On August 2, 1943, Lieutenant John F. Kennedy was commanding a U.S. Navy patrol boat in the Solomon Islands when it was split in half by a Japanese destroyer. The collision killed two of his 12 crewmen instantly. One of the more severely wounded, Patrick McMahon, was unable to swim to the relative security of the floating wreckage. Kennedy dragged McMahon to safety and then swam out again to retrieve a second crewman. Fortunately, the survivors of PT-109 spotted an island in the distance. Towing McMahon on his back, Kennedy swam toward land, finally reaching shore after five hours. Six days passed before the message "Native knows posit he can pilot 11 alive need small boat Kennedy" -carve into a coconut shell -- reached fellow Americans. The heroic lieutenant was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. Image Size: 11.5 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 14 x 16 in. Unframed. (B14920)
Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Prime Minister Churchill Resigns" Oil on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60¢ Prime Minister Churchill Resigns 1945 stamp issued July 26, 1995. On July 5, 1945, British voters went to the polls to choose a new parliament for the first time in a decade. Since many voters were in the armed services, three weeks passed before all the ballots were counted. On July 26, to the surprise of outside observers, the announcement came that voters had ousted the Conservative Party. Prime Minister Winston Churchill, therefore, was forced to resign from the office he'd held for almost five years. Although most Britons saw Churchill as an heroic figure for his wartime leadership, they voted to repudiate the harsh conditions of the 1930s. Britain, however, would be too strapped financially to soon recover from the strains of war and carry out a far-reaching program of social reform. Rationing would continue for more than five years after the war. Image Size: 16 x 10.5 in. Overall Size: 19 x 13.75 in. Unframed. (B15046)
Paul Calle (American, 1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Balfour Declaration Proclaims Jewish Homeland" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60? Balfour Declaration Proclaims Jewish Homeland stamp issued October 15, 1997. The Balfour Declaration dramatically changed the political map of the 20th century. Lord Balfour, British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, wrote a letter to Lord Rothschild, a leader of British Jewry, on November 2, 1917, saying: "His Majesty's government views with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people . . ." When World War I ended, Great Britain obtained a mandate over Palestine. The Balfour Declaration was included in the mandate and, on July 24, 1922, it was written into the League of Nations mandate. In 1939, Britain recommended a cap of 75,000 further immigrants to Israel and an end of immigration by 1944. After World War II, Britain relinquished Palestine and, on May 14, 1948, the State of Israel came into being. Image Size: 9.5 x 13.25 in. Overall Size: 15.5 x 22.25 in. Unframed. (B15764 / B15765)
Liu Yusu (Chinese, 20th C.) "Year of the Dragon" Watercolor. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60¢ Happy New Year 2000 Souvenir Sheet issued January 20, 2000. One of 12 different animals representing the 12-year repeating cycle of the Chinese lunar calendar, the dragon reigns supreme in 2000. The mystical dragon has long been held in high esteem by the Chinese. Many legends offer explanations for how these creatures became associated with the calendar. One states that the Heavenly Jade Emperor summoned all the world's animals to participate in a race. The 12 fastest competitors would receive a place on the calendar according to the order in which they finished. The rat finished first while the dragon came in fifth. Those born in a given year are said to share that animal's character traits. People whose birth years are represented by the dragon are believed to be intelligent, gifted, and full of vitality and enthusiasm. Image Size: 9.75 x 12 in. Overall Size: 10.75 x 14.5 in. Unframed. Paul Calle (American, 1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "1920's - Aviation Shrinks the World" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands The 20th Century series 60? Aviation Shrinks the World stamp issued March 16, 1998. Many notable aviation events occurred in the 1920s that served to effectively shrink the world. In 1924, the first round-the-world flight was successfully completed by two Douglas World Cruisers. Planes such as the Fokker F.VIIa and Ford Trimotor began reliable passenger service between nations. In the late 1920s, transatlantic passenger service became a reality with the golden age of the airships. In 1929, Germany's 772-foot-long Graf Zeppelin became the first to fly around the world -- journeying over 21,000 miles in only 21 days! This magnificent dirigible inaugurated regular transatlantic service -- with stops at Germany, Japan and the United States -- and ushered in a new age of aviation that brought people living in the 20th century closer together. Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "German Invasion of Greece" Signed lower right. Oil on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29¢ Germany Invades Balkans stamp issued April 6, 1941. Mussolini's bungling invasion of Greece forced Hitler to assist his humiliated ally. As German bombers rained death in Yugoslavia, German troops advanced from Bulgaria into northeastern Greece. Seasoned Greek soldiers held the German Twelfth Army at the Metaxas Line, but the 2nd German Panzer Division swept westward and trapped all 70,000 eastern Greek forces. The Luftwaffe began a crippling air assault on Piraeus, and German Dornier 17Z-2 bombers filled the skies over the Acropolis. British and Anzac forces fought valiantly to stall the German onslaught but were forced to retreat to the island of Crete. On April 20, the First Greek Army surrendered and King George II fled to London. A week later, German soldiers entered Athens. Image Size: 13.75 x 16.75 in. Overall Size: 16 x 19 in. Unframed. Jack Fellows (B. 1941) "Space Shuttle Atlantis" Signed lower left. Oil on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands PresentationPak for the 1996 Space Shuttle Atlantis $10 Commemorative Coin. The mission assigned to space shuttle Atlantis for its outer space debut received the highest security classification from the United States Department of Defense. Shuttle commander Karol Bobko and pilot Ronald Grabe flew mission specialists David Hilmers, Robert Stewart and William Pailes on one of the shorter shuttle flights, lasting just over four days. Like the other orbiters in America's space fleet, Atlantis bears the name of a pioneering sea vessel that established new frontiers in research and exploration. Atlantis was named in honor of the primary research vessel for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts from 1930 to 1966. This two-masted sailing ship was the first American vessel to be used for oceanographic research and contained two onboard laboratories. The ship studied water samples, currents and marine life while using the first electronic sounding devices to map the ocean floor. The shuttle Atlantis carries the spirit of this famous sailing ship into space. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 18 x 16.5 in. Unframed. (B15351)
Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Battle of Kursk" Oil on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29¢ Battle of Kursk 1943 Se-tenant Pair issued July 5, 1993. Soviet Russia ... the nation Adolf Hitler considered Germany's most deadly enemy. In 1941, the fascist dictator launched Operation Barbarossa -- the German invasion of Russia. For two years, Hitler's war machine relentlessly hammered at the Soviet Union. But in early 1943, with the Soviet victory at Stalingrad, the tide turned. Enraged over this ruinous defeat, Hitler ordered a counterattack against Russian forces at Kursk and dispatched a massive Panzer force to the city. His trump cards were Germany's fearful new armored weapons -- the Tiger and Panther tanks. Soviet forces, recently victorious at Stalingrad, were well-prepared for the vengeful German onslaught at Kursk, with a strong defensive perimeter and numerical superiority in both armor and men. On July 5, the battle began with a German pincer movement from the north and south. The Germans suffered great losses of both men and machinery but made little progress. A week later, the Russians initiated a counteroffensive which ultimately forced the enemy to retreat. More than two million soldiers and 6,000 tanks were engaged at Kursk, considered the greatest tank battle of the war. Image Size: 14.25 x 34.25 in. Overall Size: 18.25 x 38.5 in. Unframed. Dean Ellis (1920 - 2009) "History of the Marshall Islands Undersea Volcano" Titled lower margin. Tempera on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c Undersea Eruptions Form Island Bases stamp issued May 2, 1996. The Marshall Islands is part of the so-called "ring of fire" that circumscribes the Pacific Ocean. This area is believed to have been associated with volcanic and seismic activity since the Mesozoic Era, approximately 200 million years ago. Volcanic eruptions acquire their explosive force when magma -- a white-hot viscous fluid -- suddenly releases water vapor that drives molten rock and fragmented debris upward through apertures in the Earth's crust. The mountain peaks in the Central Pacific that rise above the ocean's surface are composed of dense black basalt that has built up to great heights over the ages after being emitted from vents in the seafloor. It is thought that these landforms initially rose much higher out of the water, but the soft basaltic lava quickly eroded in the humid Central Pacific weather. Each of the coral atolls and islands in the Marshall Islands group rests atop one of these ancient submarine volcanoes. Image Size: 8.5 x 15 in. Overall Size: 10 x 16.5 in. Unframed. (B15296)
Paul Calle (1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (B. 1961) "1940's - State of War Becomes Global" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands The 20th Century series 60c State of Warfare Becomes Global stamp issued November 16, 1998. On June 22, 1941, more than three million German troops crossed the Russian border in a deliberate betrayal of the 1939 non-aggression pact between Hitler and Stalin. Six months later, on Sunday, December 7, 1941, without warning, hundreds of Japanese planes attacked America's Pacific Fleet anchored in Pearl Harbor. The Arizona was completely destroyed with a loss of more than 1,100 men. Torpedo bombers sank the Oklahoma, California, Nevada and West Virginia, and damaged the Maryland, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. The following day, President Roosevelt declared December 7 to be "a date which will live in infamy." That same day Congress declared war on Japan, and Germany and Italy responded with declarations of war on America. By the end of the month, World War II had become global, with 38 nations involved, including 10 on the Axis side. Image Size: 11 x 14 in. Overall Size: 13 x 22 in. Unframed. (B16240 / B16241)
Robert Seabeck (Wyoming, B. 1945) "1957 Corvette" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60? 1957 Corvette stamp issued September 1, 1998. The 1950s was an era of rock 'n' roll music, jukeboxes, sockhops and drive-in movie theaters. It was also an age that witnessed the birth of a new breed of automobile -- the sports car. With its V-8 engine's 265-cubic-inch displacement increased to a muscular 283, the 1957 Chevrolet Corvette? became America's first true sports car. A close-ratio, four-speed manual transmission with floor shift was also offered for the first time on the sleek '57 model. The most important option, however, was fuel-injection, which markedly improved acceleration and top speed. The fuel-injected '57 'Vette, generating an awesome one horsepower per cubic inch of displacement, was capable of screaming from 0 to 60 in 5.7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 132 mph. Jack Fellows (B. 1941) "Boeing PW-9" Signed lower right. Oil on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c Boeing PW-9 stamp issued November 1, 1996. Utilizing such manufacturing innovations as tapered wings and welded steel-tube frameworks, Boeing's successful PW-9 series established the company as a pioneer in the field of fighter aircraft design. The U.S. Army's subsequent purchase of 164 of these aircraft not only ensured Boeing's survival, the bantam upstart was destined to become one of the most successful aircraft manufacturing companies in the world. First Flight was June 2, 1923. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 18.5 x 16 in. Unframed. (B14003)
Robert Seabeck (American, B. 1945) "1909 Model T Touring Car" Signed lower left. Mixed Media on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 60? 1909 Model T Touring Car stamp issued June 4, 1996. In 1908 Henry Ford produced the first Model T, a sputtering, backfiring contraption that would soon put America on wheels. The first Model T originally sold for $850, but once Ford got his assembly line working to perfection, adapting techniques employed by the meat packing industry, the price dropped dramatically. By 1913 Ford's Detroit plant was assembling 1,000 Model T's daily and by 1924, Americans could buy a new Ford for an amazing $290! "I am going to democratize the automobile," Ford said, "and when I'm through, everybody will be able to afford one." Affectionately dubbed the "Tin Lizzie," the Model T was light, durable, simply constructed and easy for any backyard mechanic to work on. Best of all, it had an exceptionally high clearance that enabled it to maneuver on or off America's country roads, which at that time were little more than rugged, rutted trails that turned to rivers of mud during a hard rain. Still, Ford's stubborn refusal to improve the Model T would eventually result in its demise, as he insisted there would be "no new models, no new motors, no new bodies, and no new colors." By the late 1920s, as Americans came to prefer style and comfort in their automobiles, the Model T's popularity diminished. But because of the extraordinary "Tin Lizzie," America would never be the same again. Image Size: 8 x 12.25 in. Overall Size: 15 x 22.5 in. Unframed. (B15413)

This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands Catteya x guatemalensis stamp issued September 1, 1995. Created by natural hybridization, Cattleya x guatemalensis is the result of a cross between the orange-flowered Cattleya aurantiaca and the purple-petaled Cattleya skinneri. To continue this fascinating line, the cross has been repeated artificially. Image Size: 9.5 x 7.25 in. Overall Size: 13.25 x 10.25 in. Unframed. (B15098)
Paul Calle (1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (B. 1961) "1980s - Armed Conflicts Upset Peace" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands The 20th Century Series 60c Armed Conflicts Upset Peace stamp issued January 15, 2000. A PAIR OF POTSDAM/ZECHLIN PRESENTATION WINE GLASSES c. 1734-41, for Marshall von Munnich, elaborately wheel engraved and gilded, of funnel shape, the armorial shields with quarters of swans and busts of monks centred with the double-headed eagle, the arms encircled by the Order of St. Andrew and surmounted by a coronet, flanked by Prussian eagles as supporters standing on military trophies, on tapering faceted stems and circular feet cut and gilded with scallops and flutes. 15.2cm and 15.6cmNote: the arms are of the German noble family Von Munnich, together with the Russian Order of St. Andrew. This identifies these as having been made for Burchard Christoph Graf von Munnich, a German-born Field Marshall and statesman. He entered the service of Augustus the Strong in 1716 and quickly became General Inspector or Polish troops and Commander of the Royal Guard. In 1721 he entered the service of Czar Peter the Great and under Peter II von Munnich became General of the Infantry. He was ennobled as a Russian count in 1728. Under Czarina Anna Ivanovna he was appointed Privy Councillor, Minister of War and in 1732, Field Marshall. He was awarded the Order of St. Andrew in 1734. His fortunes turned and, following the palace coup of 1741, he was exiled to Siberia by Czarina Elizabeth. There he remained for twenty years until rehabilitated by Peter III. He resumed high office and died in 1767 during the reign of Catherine the Great who commented at his death, "Even if he wasn't a Son of Russia, he was one of its Fathers".A Meissen porcelain service bearing the same arms was probably a gift to von Munnich from the Saxon Elector, Friedrich Augustus in gratitude for his role in the War of the Polish Succession (1733-38), which resulted in the Elector becoming Augustus III of Poland. While it is possible that these glasses were commissioned by Augustus III from a Saxon (Dresden) glass house, they follow Potsdam (Berlin) traditions and are more likely to have been a gift from Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia. One with shallow chip to the rim.One foot has probably been ground, which would explain the slightly difference in height. One foot rim with minute flea bite.Minor loss to gilded rims.In generally good condition, commensurate with age and use.

A rare and unique piece of military history - a DDMS 30 Corps (XXX Corps) staff car pendent flag, possibly that of General Field Marshall Montgomery, which was destroyed by Dive Bomber during the North Africa campaign in 1942. The flag, being a red cross on white ground, features handwritten notation to three corners ' Battle For Tobruck (sic) 18/11/41-5/12/41', ' DDMS30 Corps ' and ' 75A CCS - Dive Bombed 6/12/42'. Flag shows signs of wind and age damage. An interesting piece of WWII history. XXX Corps (30 Corps) was a corps of the British Army during the Second World War. The Corps provided extensive service in the North African Campaign at the Second Battle of El Alamein in late 1942, and in the Tunisia Campaign and the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943, after which it returned briefly to the United Kingdom; the Corps served in the reclamation of France from June 1944 in the Allied Invasion of Normandy, and then served in Operation Market Garden, in the Netherlands, and finally in Operation Veritable in Germany until May 1945. The Siege of Tobruk lasted for 241 days in 1941, after Axis forces advanced through Cyrenaica from El Agheila in Operation Sonnenblume against Allied forces in Libya, during the Western Desert Campaign (1940–1943) of the Second World War. In late 1940, the Allies had defeated the Italian 10th Army during Operation Compass (9 December 1940 – 9 February 1941) and trapped the remnants at Beda Fomm. During early 1941, much of the Western Desert Force (WDF) was sent to the Greek and Syrian campaigns. As German troops and Italian reinforcements reached Libya, only a skeleton Allied force remained, short of equipment and supplies.

VC 170, pp. 296-297 (illustrated p. 297 as by Viviano Codazzi and Adriaen van der Cabel (?)).NOTE:Viviano Codazzi was arguably the most important 17th century Italian painter of architectural views, specializing in capricci-architectural fantasies. The present painting depicts the arsenal in Naples and the Torre di San Vincenzo, with the Molo Grande and its lighthouse in the distance. There are two arches of a Doric arcade and a colonnade advancing from a pier at left, along with several groups of figures-including the group at left with a man wearing a turban and women wearing long gowns and head coverings (David Ryley Marshall, Viviano and Niccolò Codazzi and the Baroque Architectural Fantasy, Milan and Rome, 1993, pp. 1, 296).David Ryley Marshall notes that Codazzi's works may be grouped into "five main categories of imagery. They are the capriccio, ideal architecture, the ruin piece, the topographical picture, and the didactic picture" (Marshall, op. cit., p. 23). However, of these, "the capriccio is most central to Codazzi's preoccupations, and all of his works are to a greater or lesser degree capricci." (Marshall, op. cit. p. 23). Marshall continues: "Codazzi's capricci are those works which are imaginary compositions assembled from several motifs whether recognisable or not, which are derived from separate sources and do not make up an architecturally unified structure." (Marshall, op. cit., p. 23).Codazzi was associated with the artist Adriaen van der Cabel and may have collaborated with him between 1660-1665. Further, the Torre di San Vincenzo was a favored motif of van der Cabel's, and that artist did depict women in long gowns with covered heads. The present work may thus be a collaborative effort between the two artists, with van der Cabel possibly having painted the figures (Marshall, op. cit., pp. 18-19, 296). Viviano Codazzi's son, Niccolò (1642-1693) was also an esteemed architectural capriccio painter in his own right, and may have been in his father's workshop in the 1660s, the two working closely together during this period (Marshall, op. cit., p. 20).
