Otherwise has general wear and tear. There is a scratch mark to the gentleman's forehead on the right hand side and a chip to the paint in the top right hand corner. Signs of craquelure, surface scratching, wear and tear etc throughout. See images for more detail. There is a dark patch above his left shoulder as you look at him. On June 16th, 1944, Lascelles travelled with George VI to visit Field-Marshall Montgomery at his headquarters near Creully, France. In his diary, Lascelles notes, 'Here, after a visit to his famous caravan, we lunched - the King, Monty, Dempsey (GOC Second Army), Kit Dawnay, Ramsay, two ADCs and myself; a good luncheon, with genuine Camembert cheeses - a thing we'd not seen in London since 1940. The King then held a small investiture, elaborately staged by Monty, who made a speech about each investee (whose decorations, by the way, I had been carting about in a pouch ever since we had left London).' *Evans (Marian 'George Eliot', 1819-1880). An autograph letter signed from Susanna Chapman, 142 Strand, 8 November, circa 1851, to Miss Evans, opening 'Mr Bray had some conversation with Mr Chapman respecting your intention of spending some time in London this winter and Mr Bray thought if our terms had been more moderate you would have liked to stay with us', and continuing that this would be possible, written in a clear hand in blue ink, three pages, upper portion of second leaf cut away with loss of three lines of writing on page 3 and possibly a postscript at the head of page 4, with a numbered list of ten names written in black ink and vertically to lower blank area of page 4 in the hand of Marian Evans, names listed including Holyoake, W. Marshall, Mr Chapman, G. Dawson, C. Bray, Froude, C.C.H., Mrs Chapman, Laura Marshall and Miss Lynn, 8vo In 1850 Marian Evans moved to London with the intent of becoming a writer, and in 1851 she became a lodger at 142 Strand the house of Susanna and John Chapman, the radical publisher whom she had met earlier at Rosehill and who had published her first book as translation of David Strauss's Life of Jesus Christ (1846). Chapman had recently purchased the campaigning, left-wing journal The Westminster Review, and Evans became its assistant editor in 1851, working from 142 Strand. Although Chapman was officially the editor, it was Evans who did most of the work of producing the journal, contributing many essays and reviews beginning with the January 1852 issue and continuing until the end of her employment at the Review in the first half of 1854. The list of names compiled by Evans on the back of the letter is likely a check-list of potential journal contributors, including as it does the names of known writers George Jacob Holyoake, James Anthony Froude and Charles Bray. ORIGINAL MARTIN HANNETT AMS DBX 15-80S - FIRST EVER DIGITAL DELAY - IDENTICAL TO THE ONE USED ON UNKNOWN PLEASURES AND CLOSER. Manufactured by Advanced Music Systems, Burnley, England and with "Martin Hannett Productions" label on the side. Includes copy of Martin Hannett's user manual."This is original. One of the first production AMS' pioneered and I believed was used by Martin extensively on UNKNOWN PLEASURES, CLOSER and MOVEMENT. He loved these things and owned three. Along with the MARSHALL TIME MODULATOR (Time waster as we called it) it helped him create the unique sound that became JOY DIVISION’S own. The first use of Digital Delay to great effect.... no pun intended. These are still collected and used today. Although keeping them working is a specialist art form in itself. They have a unique ‘ warm’ and ‘spatial’ sound."Additional comment added later by Hooky "There has now been a challenge to the provenance of this item as described in the original catalogue . It was purchased in 'good faith' a long time ago from Christopher Hewitt, Ozit Recordings as the machine used by Martin Hannett and Joy Division on the Unknown Pleasures and Closer LP's. Christopher Hewitt is now saying that whilst it is one of Martin Hannett's, it wasn't and isn't the one used in those recordings. I can only be honest about this challenge and re-iterate how disappointed I am at how it was sold to me."

1934 MG PA Midget. Registration number BPL 595 (DVLA not taxed for road use). Chassis number PD 1479. Engine number XPJM1 4139, to include an Arnott Supercharger. The P type Midget was launched in March 1934 as the replacement for the J2. 'Autocar' magazine road tested the P type in November of that year and reported "This latest model is a marked improvement in all respects over its forerunners". Sales literature produced by Abingdon claimed, "In all there are over one hundred new and improved features". With good reports in the motoring press it was no surprise that the car sold well, with serious production starting at the end of January 1934; over two hundred cars a month were coming off the production lines. The P type was fitted with an all new 847cc engine, with three main bearings supporting the rigid crankshaft. Most of the design knowledge gained from previous involvement in production car trials and racing proved invaluable to the production of the P type. The chassis was far sturdier than the J type and the body was less angular and had more flowing lines. When introduced the P type two seater sold for £220. The P type was never intended as a racing model, unlike many of its predecessors, however it was soon seen on the circuits and in 1935 a three car team of P types was entered in the 24 hour Le Mans race. The team was managed by George Eyston and consisted of six ladies affectionately known as "The Dancing Daughters" although they attracted much publicity, they did not fair particularly well against opposition from Singer's 972cc sports car. The Singers took 1st, 3rd and 4th places. This, along with other factors prompted Abingdon to produce a more powerful model, to be designated the PB which was introduced in 1935. The engine capacity was increased to 939cc to give more power and a close ratio gearbox was fitted. The original P type was discontinued in favour of the new model although it was still catalogued at a substantially reduced price. This move failed to sell the remaining stocks and 27 PA’s were converted to PB models by the end of 1935. Production of the PB finally ceased in February 1936 with only 525 being produced. A total of 2,500 P types left Abingdon between 1933 and 1936. They were replaced by the T types. The early history of BPL is unknown but in May 1949 it was acquired by Mitchell Brothers of Carlton Garage, in Forrest Gate, East London. Sid Mitchell, assisted by Doug McGee (a believed ex MG Abingdon race mechanic began to campaign it with many ongoing modifications, including heavily reducing its weight by drilling the chassis, fitting a T type engine, number 4169 (in 1953 along with a colour change to red), with special head (sleeved down to 1150 cc), from 1708, a T type gearbox, K type brakes and a new space frame body. As with most race cars this was a progressive development. S.A. Mitchell entered local events before his first “big” race at Goodwood in 1950. Until 1954 he entered some thirteen events in it according to the records at Silverstone, Snetterton, Goodwood and Brands Hatch with many podium finishes, see http://www.racingsportscars.com/driver/S.%20A._-Mitchell-GB.html. It was then retired and in May 1956 sold to J. Davies in North West London, Peter Birchall of Bowness in 1957, (presumably hill climbed and trialled in Cumbria). Eric Frankland of Yorkshire bought it in May 1960 and then several owners in the region, Antony Farnell, Ernest Precious, William Marshall, Anne Sunley, Russell Cowling in 1966 who owned it until 1973 when I. Goode took over its ownership and asked Ted Gledhill of Pit Stop Garage of Stanningley, Leeds to sell him for it for him in 1978. Roger Crabtree of Sleaford bought it and our vendor bought it for £1,500 in 1983 from him. In 1989 our vendor contacted Mitchells grandson who allowed him the copy the completion photographs that go with the car and confirmed its history, (see letter on file). Today we are left with the original chassis bearing the correct number PA 1479 to the front off side dumb iron, a replacement XPJM1 engine numbered 4139, which is from a 1939 Morris Ten Series 3 and a partial space frame body. Sold with two R.F. 60 log books, a V5, letter from S A Mitchell, a large photographic race history and sundry correspondence. This MG, once restored, will make a worthwhile project that should have no problem being invited to Historic races such as Goodwood.

Lot 506

1st-2nd century AD. A silver Roman ring of Henig's Type VIII with circular bezel and triangular shoulders with a deep groove to the perimeter; large central oval panel decorated with upward-pointing hatches; to each shoulder a loop and flanking ring-and-dot motifs; discoid raised bezel with incised 'TOT inscription (an abbreviation for the Celtic deity To[u]tatis"). An article describing this ring and other similar examples was published by Brett Hammond in Treasure Hunting magazine, January 2009, p.44 - 'Keep a sharp eye out for Totatis'. Cf. Portable Antiquities Scheme report number LIN-B1288. 6.46 grams, 21.48mm overall, 17.80mm average internal diameter (approximate size British P, USA 7 1/2, Europe 17.75, Japan 15) (7/8"). Ex Marshall collection; found Lincolnshire in the 1920s; accompanied by a copy of the Portable Antiquities Scheme report number LIN-B1288. Totatis (also spelt Toutatis or Teutates) was one of the principal deities in Gaul and Britain, one of three Gaulish gods mentioned by the Roman poet Lucan in the 1st century AD, alongside Esus and Taranis. Several epigraphic inscriptions have been found, for example the one at Cumberland Quarries, dedicated to Jupiter Optimus Maximus and Mars Toutatis. Finger rings marked 'TOT' are sometimes found in eastern Britain. The distribution of these rings corresponds generally with the territory of the Corieltauvi tribe. In 2005 a silver ring inscribed DEO TOTA (to the god Tot[atis]) and '[VTERE] FELIX' ([use this ring] happily) was discovered at Hockliffe, Bedfordshire, which supports the idea that the inscription TOT did refer to the god Toutatis. Many of these rings are known from the East Midlands, especially in Lincolnshire where the deity appears to have had a large following. Very fine condition. Rare.

Cf. Marshall, F.H. Catalogue of the Jewellery, Greek, Etruscan and Roman, in the Department of Antiquities, British Museum, London, 1911, pl.LI for type. 30 grams, 42.5mm (1 1/2").
