An English carved and painted carousel galloper bust of The Earl RobertsMade by Orton & Spooner, circa 1900Originally the front of a centaur galloper, looking slightly to sinister, wearing military uniform with carved medals and orders, holding a basket hilt sword in his left hand, 40cm wide, 31cm deep, 75cm high (15 1/2in wide, 12in deep, 29.5in high) Footnotes:Capitalising on the patriotic spirit in Britain during and after the Boer War (1899 – 1902) at the turn of the 20th century, Orton & Spooner produced a series of gallopers celebrating six of the British Army Generals instrumental in the victories. The war began when the Boer army besieged British garrisons in the Transvaal region of South Africa, after years of rising tension between the two factions. The hostilities surrounded the British desire to unite their colonies with the Boer Republics to the east of the country, with the Boers wanting to maintain their independence. Field Marshall Earl Frederick Roberts, VC (1832-1914) was initially commissioned into the Bengal Artillery in 1851 and climbed the ranks of the British army by serving in Afghanistan and India. A 19th century Copeland Parian figure of Ophelia. Sculpted by Calder Marshall RA, and dated June 1863, impressed marks to the reverse, incised 'C. Marshall', mounted on a circular base with a basket of flowers, 42cm high Condition Report: Appears in very good condition for its age, a very small chip from one of the ivory leaves on her head dress, other wise free of chips, cracks and restoration. There is some discolouration on the inside where the figure meets the base.
