A RARE SUITE OF TWENTY FOUR GEORGE III SCOTTISH SILVER GILT TABLE AND DESSERT KNIVES DAVID MARSHALL, EDINBURGH CIRCA 1785 - 1795 (DATE LETTER LACKING) comprising twelve table knives and twelve dessert knives, each with rounded silver gilt handles, beaded edges and oval cartouches with ribbon tied surmount each engraved with crest and armorials, simple steel blades (24) table knives 25cm long, dessert knives 22.5cm Scottish hallmarked knives are incredibly rare in any quantity. Sets such as this of both table and dessert knives are virtually unheard of. The poor survival rate and likely limited production levels due to supply from specialist cutler's / knife makers in Sheffield and London undercutting the Scottish makers

A large rare Worcester junket dish, the centre with scroll-moulded panel picked out in gilt and painted with two `fancy birds' before a leafy branch, within a scale blue border and crisply moulded wide spiral band with colourful moths and butterflies, scale blue and floral bands, gilded rim, 25.5cm diam, square mark, c.1770. Provenance: Sir Jeremy Lever Collection, Bonhams, Lot 166Vendor's Note: This rare coloured decoration of fancy birds and fruit can be associated to James Giles. A very similar example was exhibited by Albert Amour Ltd, October 1993. Fig 9314. Another is illustrated by Rissik Marshall (1954) fig228. A write up on Junket Dishes including reference and picture of similar dish, can be found in the Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain by John Sandon. Page 212. Field Marshall Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, VC, KG, KP, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCIE, KStJ, VD, PC (30 September 1832 - 14 November 1914) was a British soldier who was one of the most successful commanders of the 19th century. He served in the Indian Rebellion, the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War before leading British Forces to success in the Second Boer War. He also became the last Commander-in-Chief of the Forces before the post was abolished in 1904. He was known and referred to (but not to his face) as Bobs. Good Condition.
