Robert Taylor Moral 24x20 Support Restricted Edition of 1500 print published in 1985, signed by Peter Townsend with Certificates of Authenticity. Condition slight crease on edge image and signature not affected. Published in 1985, this moving piece has become one of the most recognisable aviation art prints published. With outstanding clarity, the simple composition instantly conveys the moral support given by an extraordinary leader and commanding officer to one of his men who is in trouble. That leader was the highly decorated and much respected Group Captain Peter Townsend CVO DSO DFC who commanded 85 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. In August 1940, just as the battle was reaching its height, he spotted one of his Hurricane pilots, Flying Officer Marshall, in a serious predicament. After suffering a mid-air collision with a Heinkel 111 during an intense air to air engagement over Kent, Marshall had lost a good part of his tail and port wing and was struggling to stay airborne. He was a sitting duck for any preying Bf109, but his CO came to the rescue. Providing protection and encouragement, Peter Has original Military Gallery Certificate. Townsend stayed with the young Flying Officer and escorted him all the way back to their base at Debden. It's a moving story to go with a beautiful print thats signed by the legendary Peter Townsend. Carrington (Dora, painter, 1893-1932).- Brenan (Gerald, writer and Hispanic scholar, 1894-1987) Diary and Papers Relating to D[ora] C[arrington] 1925-1926, duplicated typescript with autograph corrections and signed by Brenan, presentation copy from the author to Ralph Partridge, inscribed "This copy left with R.S.P." [Ralph Sherring Partridge], 124pp., slightly browned, browned, spring loaded cloth boards, sm. 4to, [c. 1920's].⁂ Gerald Brenan's impassioned account of his unhappy relationship with Dora Carrington. The root of all this unhappiness lay with the relationship of Dora Carrington with Lytton Strachey, who had met during during the First World War and developed into a close and unbreakable bond, despite Strachey's homosexuality. In 1917 they set up home together, and in 1918, Ralph Partridge came to live with them. Strachey fell deeply in love with Partridge and Carrington married him in 1921 in order to stay close to Strachey. Partridge's closest friend was Gerald Brenan who became Carrington's lover, and whose relationship seems to have fluctuated according to Carrington's feelings about Strachey's and Partridge's behaviour. Lytton Strachey died in January 1932 of undiagnosed stomach cancer and a few weeks later Dora Carrington shot herself."CRD made love to me because R[alph] was in love with her; when I fell entirely in love and R. out, she left me for him, assisted by an unconscious jealousy of Frances [Marshall]. She [Carrington] will always be the same, restless, irritable, loving only those who do not love her, and turning quickly away from those who do. No one more unfit for social life could be found, and yet why do I still say that she is good, affectionate, gentle?" - Brenan.Brenan's diary mentions other members of the Bloomsbury Group, including Virginia Woolf, on her character, "Wherever Virginia goes, she undoes a knot like a Lapland witch and lets out a war", and her novels, "She conceives the characters clearly, different thoughts occupying their minds, yet they all speak in one tone. The peculiarity of V's novels lies in no part of the book being adapted for action...her characters are bundles of images - mostly memories: those abstracts qualifications which throw light on how they may be expected to behave under varying circumstances are absent: and, as nothing whatever does happen in the course of the book, and in V.'s conception of the world nothing, apparently, ever can happen, one does not miss anything".Provenance: (1). Reginald Sherring Partridge (1894-1960), worked for Leonard Woolf and Virginia Woolf, married first Dora Carrington and then Frances Marshall (2). Richard Heron Ward (1910-69), writer.

Mark Schuler (American, B. 1951) "First Docking in Space 1966" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 45c First Docking in Space stamp issued November 24, 1989. On July 18, 1966, exactly 101 minutes apart, two rockets were launched flawlessly into space from Cape Kennedy, Florida. Timing was critical (a leeway of only 40 seconds could be allowed) because the two spacecraft were to attempt to rendezvous miles above Earth. The manned craft was Gemini 10, piloted by John Young and copiloted by Michael Collins. Their key objective was to dock Gemini 10 with the unmanned Agena spacecraft launched less than two hours earlier. It was important to the entire Gemini Project that the mission succeed; previous such flights had experienced disappointing failures in attempting to accomplish such a rendezvous. After 40 minutes of maneuvering, the Gemini 10 astronauts successfully docked their vehicle with its target. Young and Collins then proceeded to approach Gemini 8's derelict Agena, which had been left behind in an emergency. Collins reached the marooned craft with a 27-minute space walk. Loud cheers could be heard in Mission Control when the astronauts' spacecraft finally splashed down in the Atlantic, for Gemini 10 was the first mission to accomplish all of the objectives required for a lunar mission in the upcoming Apollo program: orbital rendezvous, docking, orbital maneuvering of the composite vehicle and controlled work during extra-vehicular activity. Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "HMS Ajax at the Battle of the River Plate" Original Oil painting on Canvas Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 45c Battle of the River Plate 1939 HMS Ajax stamp issued December 13, 1989. Within minutes of the first sighting of Germany's Graf Spee at 6:14 a.m., British Commodore Henry Harwood aboard the Ajax deployed his three-cruiser fleet to attack. HMS Exeter split to the left; the lighter HMS Ajax and HMNZS Achilles to the right. This way, Harwood hoped to foil the German's heavier guns. Despite expert maneuvering, Ajax lost both after turrets during the battle. But she also inflicted heavy damage as her invaluable spotter plane directed fire. Together, the Ajax and Achilles shadowed the Graf Spee as it fled. Image Size: 11.25 x 17.5 in. Overall Size: 14 x 20 in. Unframed. (B12241)
Shannon Stirnweis (B. 1931) "Japanese Defeated at Truk" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Japanese Defeated at Truk 1944 stamp issued February 17, 1994. Just 10 hours from Tokyo, Truk was a major Japanese stronghold -- one reputed to be invincible. Yet planes from U.S. carriers quickly disproved that myth, eliminating more than a dozen Japanese warships, over 270 aircraft and a number of merchant vessels in a potent two-day raid. U.S. losses were minor by comparison -- only about two dozen aircraft. The 50,000-man Japanese garrison on Truk was left virtually untouched, yet without a means of easily leaving the atoll. Thus, what might have been a real threat to Allied forces in the Pacific was quickly and effectively neutralized. The painting portrays victorious U.S. Admiral Spruance and Vice Admiral Mitscher above an American torpedo plane. Below is a Japanese freighter being devoured by flames in Truk lagoon. Mark Schuler (American, B. 1951) "First Man-Made Satellite 1957" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 45c First Man-Made Satellite stamp issued November 24, 1989. By the early 1950s, rockets were widely employed in studying the upper atmosphere. Scientists realized, however, that artificial satellites could perform the same duties much more efficiently. On July 29, 1955, President Eisenhower announced that the United States planned to launch "small unmanned earth-circling satellites." On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union became the world's first nation to successfully launch an artificial satellite --Sputnik 1. On January 31, 1958, the U.S. launched Explorer 1, the first American space satellite. Explorer 1 discovered Earth was surrounded by ionized particles of energy. On March 17, 1958, the U.S. orbited Vanguard I, which demonstrated that Earth is almost imperceptibly pear-shaped with a slight bulge in the Southern Hemisphere. On October 1, 1958, the U.S. established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to manage the country's fledgling space program. On February 17, 1959, NASA launched Vanguard II, which was designed to provide information about Earth's cloud cover. Vanguard III followed several months later and was used to map Earth's magnetic field. The birth of the Space Age provided mankind with new insights into the mysterious universe and our place in it. Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Santisima Trinidad" Signed lower right. Oil on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands History's Greatest Fighting Ships sheetlet issued December 1, 1998. One of the many ships opposing the outnumbered British at Trafalgar in 1805 was Spain's Santisima Trinidad -- the world's largest warship -- which had been launched in Havana in 1769. During the fierce battle, the Santisima Trinidad was demasted and forced to surrender to the British -- along with what remained of its crew of nearly 1,000 men. Image Size: 10.5 x 13 in. Overall Size: 14.5 x 17 in. Unframed. (B15833)
Herb Kawainui Kane (American, 1928 - 2011) Original Acrylic painting on Illustration Board titled, "Marshall Islands Christmas Carolers" Signed lower left. Original Acrylic painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the First Day Cover for the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Silent Night stamp issued October 25, 1993. On Christmas Eve of 1818, in the town of Oberndorf, Austria, Pastor Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics to one of the best-loved carols of all time, Silent Night. Without Mohr's tenacity there would have been no music for his parish's Christmas services because the church organ was in disrepair. Inspired by a mother and baby that he had visited earlier in the day, and with the aid of the local schoolmaster Franz Gruber, Mohr created a song that could be performed by guitar. Although the hymn was forgotten among the choir manuscripts for many years, it was rediscovered and made popular by a family of singers who toured Europe and America more than 20 years after its debut. Today, 175 years after it was written, Silent Night has become a Christmas tradition. In the Marshall Islands, where it's known as Bon Emman, this stirring hymn is often heard echoing through the island palms on a moonlit evening. Image Size: 17.5 x 21 in. Overall Size: 20.75 x 24.25 in. Unframed. (B14543)
Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "HMNZS Achilles at the Battle of the River Plate" Original Oil Painting on Canvas Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 45c Battle of the River Plate 1939 HMNZS Achilles stamp issued December 13, 1989. New Zealand's light cruiser HMNZS Achilles was one of the three Allied warships that caught the German pocket battleship Graf Spee near Uruguay's River Plate on December 13, 1939. She followed her orders to "Attack at once by day or night." Masterful maneuvering during the battle kept her damage to a minimum, while her six-inch guns pockmarked the German. When the Graf Spee fled, Achilles became the major pursuing craft, exchanging final salvos at 10,000 yards as the Graf Spee slipped into what was to prove her final resting place -- the neutral Uruguayan harbor at Montevideo. Image Size: 11.5 x 17.75 in. Overall Size: 14.25 x 19.75 in. Unframed. (B12242)
Herb Kawainui Kane (American, 1928 - 2011)Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board titled, "1800s Life in the Marshalls - Tattooed Warrior" Signed lower left. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the First Day Cover for the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Warrior with Canoes stamp issued Septemer 15, 1993. Since most warfare in the Marshalls took place between neighboring islands, canoes were significant part of the fighting. Warring factions heavily depended upon these vessels to wage attacks on their enemies. The weapons thought to have been fashioned from the spiny tails of stingrays lashed to pointed wooden shafts. Undoubtedly, a skilled spear thrower could win many a battle with such a fierce weapon. The attire of the warrior was similar to that of all ancient Marshallese men. Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Fall of Singapore" Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Fall of Singapore 1941 stamp issued December 10, 1991. Nestled against the Kra Peninsula, the tiny island of Singapore sparkled like a jewel in the British colonial crown. Protected by the strongest naval base in the world and by seemingly impregnable coastal defenses, Malaya ground commander Lt. General A.E. Percival and his compatriots smugly ignored early indications of a Japanese ground invasion -- with fatal consequences. By December 10, 1941, more than 55,000 soldiers under Lt. General Tomoyuki Yamashita were advancing from the north. By mid-January the Japanese had gained control of the peninsula and isolated the ragged remnants of the combined British forces and a contingent of civilians on Singapore. For more than 45 days, the last vestige of Britain's eastern empire held fast. On February 15, with starvation looming, the forces surrendered. Image Size: 13.25 x 16.25 in. Overall Size: 17.25 x 20.25 in. Unframed. (B13314)
