Full title: Johann Siebmacher: Das Neue Wappenbuch (The new book of armorials), 1605, NeurenbergDescription:Dim.: 21,5 x 17 x 5 cm Ref.: Stadtisches Museum Schloss Rheydt, inv. no. 1094531, for another example. (External link available on rm-auctions.com) This hand-coloured example is the first edition of Sibmacher's magnus opus. The Holy Roman Empire consisted of hundreds of sovereign states and individual dominions. The variety of families operating in this framework and their diverse relationships with one another was similarly confusing. Reference works like this coat of arms compendium attempted to provide an overview. The structure of the coats of arms is based on the structure of the Holy Roman Empire. First the coats of arms of the emperor and the electors are shown, then those of the other princes, counts, etc. The title page proudly points out that over 3,320 coats of arms are shown. Under the register, we find thee printer's mark: Printed in Nuremberg by Christoph Lochner / Published by Johann Sibmacher, / In the 1605th year. Johann Ambrosius Siebmacher (1561-1611) was a German coat of arms painter and engraver in Nuremberg, who is today best known for his Wappenbüchlein/Wappenbuch. The 1605 edition shows the most with 264 coats of arms. Siebmacher's book of arms became the standard work of heraldry and supplementary volumes were published until 1806. A total of around 19,000 coats of arms are represented. In the late 19th and 20th centuries, further coats of arms collections followed with the 'Neuer Siebmacher'.Condition reports:Condition reports (unless otherwise specified above):Please contact us on info@rm-auctions.com to request a condition report. Full title: A Chinese gilt copper alloy 'rhinoceros' box and cover, TangDescription:Dia.: 7,5 cm - H.: 2,5 cm Provenance:- An old Belgian private collection. Ref.: Sotheby's, New York, Sep. 21, 2022, lot 330, for a similar example. (External link available on rm-auctions.com) In the Shang and early Zhou periods the rhinoceros was prized for its tough hide, which was used to make armour. By the Warring States period, if not earlier, belief had taken hold that the beast’s horn could detect, even neutralize, poison in food and drink, giving the rhinoceros special cachet. In fashioning armor, the hide - whether rhinoceros hide or leather from the hide of an ox or other animal - once dried and properly prepared, was cut into small rectangular strips, known as plates, that were linked together to form lamellar armor, often termed fish-scale armor in Chinese. Such armor no doubt resembled the lamellar armor worn by the terracotta warriors recovered from the trenches around the tomb of Qinshihuangdi (r. 221 - 210 BC), though the lamellar armor of Qinshihuang’s warriors surely had plates of leather or, more likely, of iron. With the gradual extinction of the rhinoceros in north China late in the Bronze Age (c. 1700 BC - AD 220) and with the rise of iron-plate armor during the Zhou, the use of rhinoceros-hide armor had seriously declined by the early years of our era; even so, it is believed that at least a little rhino-hide armor was still being made during the Tang dynasty. And a diagram in a book published in 1852 indicates that rhinoceros-hide armor was still in use for ceremonial purposes as late as the Qing dynasty. Without written records from the Tang clearly stating the reason, we cannot know why the rhinoceros is depicted with scales. Apart from mere artistic license, the most plausible explanation for so portraying the rhinoceros is that the beast had become conflated with the qilin in the thinking of the day. Indeed, some individuals believed the rhinoceros to be the qilin, a mythical hooved chimerical creature from Chinese mythology. (In the Ming dynasty the giraffe was believed by many to be the qilin.) Although often depicted with the lithe body and furred hide of a deer, the qilin is also frequently shown with scales over its body, as witnessed by the Yuan-dynasty (1279 - 1368), blue-and-white charger with qilin decor in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (AK-RBK-1965-88).Condition reports:Condition reports (unless otherwise specified above):Please contact us on info@rm-auctions.com to request a condition report. A THANGKA OF CHATURBHUJA AVALOKITESHVARA, TIBET, 18TH-19TH CENTURY 西藏十八至十九世紀四臂觀音Distemper on cloth. Seated on a lotus pedestal in dhyanasana with his primary hands holding a jewel at his chest while his secondary hands hold a lotus blossom and mala beads. Clothed in a blue and red dhoti and wearing a billowing green scarf. His serene face with sinuously lidded eyes below elegantly arched brows, a broad nose, and full lips forming a calm smile. His hair arranged in a high chignon topped by the red-skinned head of the Buddha Amitabha behind the five-leaf tiara, backed by a radiating mandorla and green halo.Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Wou Kiuan. Wou Lien-Pai Museum, coll. no. P.46. Dr. Wou Kiuan (1910-1997) was a Chinese diplomat and noted scholar of Chinese art. His father, Wou Lien-Pai (1873-1944), was one the leading political figures of early 20th century China, remembered for his role as speaker and leader of parliament during the turbulent years of the Republican era. Dr. Wou himself embarked on an illustrious career in diplomacy until his retirement in 1952, when he settled in London and devoted the rest of his life to the study of Chinese art. It was no doubt fortuitous that Dr. Wou's years of collecting coincided with an abundant availability of exceptional Chinese art on the London market. From the mid-1950s to the late 1960s he was able to form a collection of well over 1,000 works that together represented virtually every category of Chinese art. At the heart of Dr. Wou's drive to collect was a burning desire to preserve the relics of China's rich historical past scattered across Europe, and to promote Chinese art and culture. It is unclear when Dr. Wou conceived of the idea to create a place to house his collection, but in 1968 he opened the doors to the Wou Lien-Pai Museum, named in honor of his father. Over the years the Museum became a 'must see' destination for collectors, academics, and visiting dignitaries, and Dr. Wou would delight in leading his visitors through the galleries, recounting stories of China's glorious history. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, minimal soiling, creasing, few small losses.Dimensions: Image size 44 x 29.5 cm, Size incl. frame 65.9 x 51.9 cm The lower register with Manjusri seated in dhyanasana on a lotus throne, wielding his sword with his right hand and holding a lotus in his left coming to full bloom at the shoulder supporting a book, and Mahakala striding in alidhasana, wearing a tiger skin, engulfed in flames.
