HARLAN J. A MEMOIR OF INDIA AND AVGHANISTAUN [sic] with observations on the present exciting and critical state and future prospects of those countries. Philadelphia: Dobson, 1842. First edition, 8vo., engraved portrait frontispiece of Dôst Mo??ammad, engraved folding map of Cabul and map of Djillalabad, later calf, gilt, bookplate of Charles Crofton-Atkins Note: Josiah Harlan (1799?1871) was an adventurer and soldier of fortune who possibly was the first American to travel to Afghanistan. He found employment as a surgeon with the British East India Company. In 1827 he entered the service of Shah Shooja-ool-Moolk, the former leader of Afghanistan who had been deposed in 1810. Following later intrigues with various Afghan leaders, he was later expelled by the British. The book begins with a discussion of the disastrous defeat of the Anglo-Indian force at the hands of Afghan tribesmen in January 1842. Six of the book's seven chapters deal with British India, its foreign policy, and its relationship to Afghanistan. The seventh, and by far the longest, chapter is a detailed description of Amir Dôst Mo??ammad Khân (1793-1863), based in part on Harlan's service to and interactions with the Amir.

[More (Sir Thomas [St Thomas More], lord chancellor, humanist, and martyr, 1478-1535)] [The answere to the fyrst part of the poysened booke, whych a namelesse heretyke hath named the souper of the lorde], manuscript in a fine Tudor hand, 1½pp., 1f. only from a larger work and unfinished at end, one side 39 lines, browned, disbound, folio, [c. 1530s].⁂ The Answer to a Poisoned Book was a defence of the orthodox doctrine of the eucharist, published in 1533, and the last of More's religious publications. Written in response to Tyndale's The Souper of the Lorde, 1533, which from the above title would suggest that More was unaware of the author's name.

Gibbs... I received a parcel... on 24th June G.W. delivery not produced. I did not pay charge soles plaice Station master told me to take... rest of them & send in claim. I sent in claim for 10/- In depts parcel which came to Witney for me 125 herrings missing - roes broken - not fit to sell... Sent in claim for 15/-... ." Other cases including flooded land, making a tomb, debts etc.

An attractive score book, signed and inscribed by Falla, the 9 x 12 hardback edition being a printed musical score of one of his most renowned works La Vida Breve (1905), published by Max Eschig, Paris. Signed and inscribed in black ink to the title page `To my dear Director.. with all my friendship, admiration and deep gratitude. Manuel de Falla.´ in French, adding also the date beneath the inscription, Paris 31st January 192?, in his hand. The 122 pages book is attractively bound in dark black and green leather with embossed gilt letters to the spine. Extremely small overall, minor age wear, otherwise VG £200-300La Vida Breve (1905) ("The Brief Life¨) is a lyric drama in two acts and four scenes, with libretto by the Spanish poet Carlos Fernandez-Shaw, and French adaptation by Paul Milliet. The present score includes words both in Spanish and French.

Signed and inscribed in fountain pen ink to the title page `Affectionate homage to … César Franck´. The 117 pages book is attractively bound in dark green leather with embossed gilt letters to the spine. Extremely small overall, minor age wear, otherwise VG £150-200Ruth (1843-46), revised in 1860, is an "Eglogue Biblique" work in three parts, for soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, baritone, two tenors, four-voice chorus and orchestra, with libretto by French author Alexandre Guillemin (1789-1872). The present version is a piano-vocal score prepared by Franck himself which was issued in 1869 by Hartmann, Paris.
