Interesting and rare monkey automaton, modelled with the monkey seated on a chair in the centre of a Victorian drawing room, his three cornered hat and violin case lying at his feet, with a music stand in front of him, the room is housed in a glazed fronted case, which is mounted upon a mahogany base with boxwood borders; operated by a hand crank winding handle at the rear of the case with tune change mechanism situated at the side, the sixteen note reed organ playing six airs; when the handle is cranked the monkey musician plays the violin, moves his head and makes various facial expressions, 25.25" high
An inlaid oak thirty-hour longcase clock with Adam and Eve automaton Richard Blakeborough, Otley, early 19th century The plated countwheel bell striking movement with 14 inch white painted Roman numeral break-arch dial with arched calendar aperture and signed R. Blakeborough, Otley and numbered 1939 to centre, within chapter ring with Arabic fifteen minutes to outer track and floral spray decorated spandrels beneath arch with recessed painted scene of the Garden of Eden applied with figures of Adam and Eve each gesturing with the motion of the pendulum towards a central tree entwined with the serpent, in a swan neck pedimented case with turned pilasters to hood above oval fan cartouche centred shaped-top short trunk door flanked by line decorated canted angles, on conforming crossbanded panel inlaid plinth base with bracket front feet, 228cm (7ft 6ins) high. JOHN SLYE OF WEYMOUTH: A GEORGE III MAHOGANY LONGCASE CLOCK, with a silvered dial with subsidiary seconds and date dials and fan engraved spandrels, the arch with a rocking ship automaton "The Neptune", with a two-train eight-day movement striking on a bell, the hood with three ball finials and stop-fluted columns, the trunk with an arch topped door with conforming canted stop-fluted columns, 93" high. A George III figured mahogany longcase clock with eight day movement striking on a bell, the gilt break arch dial with silvered chapter ring and centre, subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture and inscribed `William Avenell, Portsmouth`, beneath rocking Father Time automaton to arch, the hood with swan neck pediment above a glazed door flanked by fluted columns, the rectangular trunk door with shell paterae inlay, on a plain base and bracket feet, height approx 222cm, with pendulum and weights.
A 19th Century rosewood and alabaster mantel clock, possibly Austrian, the circular dial with enamelled outer roman dial, centred by an automaton figural movement operating a well, the case with gold painted eagle finial, flanked by lion and leaf brackets, the lower section with a colonnaded base of four alabaster columns with mirrored alcoves behind, on breakfront platform and gold coloured feet, two-train movement striking on a gong, with sunburst pendulum, 20 1/2in.
UNUSUAL AND RARE BLACK FOREST CUCKOO AND JACK AUTOMATON AND MUSICAL THREE TRAIN WALL CLOCK, the well carved chalet type case with stag and crossed muskets to the pediment above a game bird and hare flanking the circular dial with white ivorine chapter and pointers, the three train weight driven movement with skeletonised brass plates and wheel trains activating the half hour and hour strike on a gong, the going train and the third train integrated to a musical mechanism on a 74mm rotating pin barrel and comb, the cuckoo and jack appearing in open hatches above the dial. 70cm high inc. pediment, 50cm wide
A late 19th Century French Musical Automaton, the glazed ebonised case inset with hand-coloured print of a rustic rural riverscape, with various applied cut-out articulated and rotating parts, including windmill sails, water-wheel to the background, whilst in the foreground a lady feeds chickens, while another spools yarn, watched by a cooper, to a 2 ½" spring-driven music box mechanism, fitted with a boxwood flywheel and further applied various pulleys and cams, with the whole raised on four lacquered brass ball feet, height 10"
A CLOCKWORK AUTOMATON FATHER CHRISTMAS SHOP DISPLAY with painted composition head and hands, blue painted eyes, open/closed laughing mouth showing teeth and tongue, one hand with hole to hold tree or sign, seated in a large seated papier-mache boot, red wool coat and hat with white cotton wool trim, the key-wind mechanism causes the head to nod, 1920s, 23in. (58.5cm) high (some crazing to paint, white paint on beard and eyebrows is an old over paint, the red coat and hat is an exact copy of what was there before using an old wool cloth, the trim is original).

Demanche" including Charles Bertram 4 A.Ls.s. 4pp. 8vo and 4to one on headed paper one dated Benares 1899 the others n.d. one addressed to "Dear Squire" asking if he will stand in for him in a show in Kensington another addressed to "Dear Will" asking for news of a slate trick; Chung Ling Soo one typed L.s. 1p. 8vo 1903 declining an engagement but offering the services of "some Chinese friends pupils of mine who give a very neat show for Clubs Smokers etc."; Robert Ganthony one A.L.s. 2pp. 8vo 1902 mentioning Mr. Morton (manager of the Palace Theatre) and possible work in the music halls; Keiro [Mrs. Charles Yates Stephenson] one typed L.s. 1p. 4to 1904 regarding Prowse`s sole agency; John Nevil Maskelyne one A.L.s 2 pp. 8vo 1878 mentioning his decapitation illusion and enclosing a card "to see my new automaton"; Servais Le Roy one A.L.s. 1p. 8vo 1900 giving his terms and those of Mme. Talma; and Howard Thurston one A.L.s. 1p. 4to on headed paper 1900 offering to work at the Palace Theatre. ***William Squire worked under the name of H. Demarche for Keith Prowse as an agent for actors actresses and other entertainers. Many of the letters in this and the following eight lots relate to engagements at the Palace Theatre the Coliseum the music hall variety concerts in London and the provinces " and private entertainments. As well as working for Keith Prowse he worked professionally as a conjuror under his own name and was a member of the Magic Circle.
