A George III striking mahogany bracket with automaton, the 7 inch brass dial signed on a recessed silvered plaque in the matted centre Robert Henderson, London, date aperture, scrolled foliate spandrels, Strike/Not lever at 9 o`clock, the shallow arch painted with a scene of two blacksmiths shaping a horseshoe on an anvil, both with automaton arms and hammers, alongside a loosebox with a third farrier shoeing the rear fore of a horse, being his name Conundrum on a plaque behind, the movement with verge escapement, the foliate scroll engraved backplate centred with a basket of flowers, half hour passing strike, the two train fusee movement with trip repeat, in a mahogany bell top case flanked by brass caryatids, urn finials and ogee feet, surmounted by carrying handle, 1ft 7½ in (50cm) high. Provenance - Given to George John Scott on his retirement in 1934 as Treasurer of the Bank of Scotland.

Janvier, Paris, mid 19th century The eight-day outside countwheel gong striking movement stamped in an oval reserve JANVIER, A PARIS to frontplate and with 2.25 inch circular convex white Roman numeral dial with repeat signature to lower edge, the rear case panel fitted with a small cylinder music box movement playing a choice of two airs via a 2.5 inch pinned cylinder on a tuned steel comb mounted within brass bed, with pull-wind line and start/stop levers fitted to the lower right hand rear corner of the case, the front with mixed media (gouache heightened stipple engraving) image of a busy courtyard within a riverside town incorporating the clock dial to church tower and seventeen automaton actions including cow being milked, a duck bobbing in a pond, five chickens pecking, a waterwheel rotating, a goat feeding on a shrub, a blacksmith striking an anvil and a windmill turning, all operated from behind via an elaborate system of wooden pulleys and wire levers powered by a spring-driven motor also mounted within the right hand edge of the case, the image with printed signature CH. RIVIERE to lower left and measuring 55 cm (21.5ins) high, 73cm (28.75ins) wide; the case 81cm (32ins) high, 99cm (39ins) wide overall. A N.F. Janvier is noted in Hayard, Michel ANTIDE JANVIER 1751-1835 as working circa 1830..
A fine and rare George III mahogany eight-day longcase clock with lion automaton, centre seconds and moonphase George Hewett, Marlborough, circa 1760 The four pillar rack and bell striking movement with anchor escapement set low between the plates and pallets operating via linkages the rocking eyes and shaking tail of the painted lion automaton to the arch of the 12 inch brass break-arch dial with the left paw connected in a similar manner to the strike hammer, the dial centre with rolling moonphase aperture calibrated with the age of the moon to the edge of the lunar disc and with scroll engraved lunettes beneath calendar aperture flanked by public house and chinioserie pavilion decoration beneath signature Geo. Hewett, MARLBOROUGH to a scroll bordered reserve, within an applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes to outer track and foliate scroll cast spandrels to angles, in a pagoda pedimented case with shaped fretwork panel infill above break-arch dentil cornice and Corinthian columns to hood, the trunk with break-arch door flanked by reeded canted angles, on shaped panel moulded outline fronted plinth base with ogee bracket feet, 226cm (89ins) high. George Hewitt is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as a maker of astronomical and musical clocks who worked from Marlborough circa 1720-69. The current lot is testament to his skilled and inventive approach which, in addition to the incorporation of a rare automata feature to the arch of the dial, also has the refinement of centre seconds and rolling moonphase neatly incorporated into the centre..

A George III mahogany crossbanded oak longcase clock, 33cm arched painted dial. convex Arabic chapter, subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, floral spandrels, Adam and Eve automaton to arch, twin winding holes, signed Mawkes/Derby, the eight day movement striking on a bell, hood with swan neck cornice terminating in brass stamped roundels, centred with a ball and spire finial, turned columns, shaped door to waist flanked by canted angles, outswept base, bracket feet, 218cm high, c.1830 ***William Mawkes was the fourth son of Thomas Mawkes (1740-1821) a former apprentice and employee of the celebrated John Whitehurst, FRS. William, who was born in 1782, worked with his father until his death and then on his own account until c. 1830. This is the first recorded example of an automaton clock by this maker.
