A boxed Swiss Imhof gilt metal mantel clock with a monk automaton ringing the bell on the hour and half hour, with another sleeping monk, the scene within four pillars and below the circular dial set with Roman numerals and inscribed "Imhof Striking", numbered 82 731 to base, height 25cm. CONDITION REPORT: There is pitting to the case, strikes when wound.
An early 19th century Napoleonic Prisoner of War spinning jenny bone automaton, French, with two partially painted polychrome Breton ladies, both sat on high open carved chairs with mechanically moving arms and head, one making a ball of thread with a short length of twine, the other working the spinning wheel, together with a painted gentleman with articulated head, arms and leg, appearing to operate a treadle lathe and drawknife, all raised on a bordered platform over gears, some losses and modern repairs, 4½in. (11.4 cm.) high.
A late 19th century automaton 'butterfly catcher' doll in the manner of Leopold Lambert, with a bisque porcelain head indistinctly stamped 'S.GERMANY', with blue glass eyes and open mouth with a tasseled hat, velvet waist coat and knickerbockers with lace details, with moving head, bisque lower arms and butterfly and with musical accompaniment, in a later glazed mahogany display case, 68cm high, 23.8cm square.
A rare French gilt-metal Champlevé enamel singing bird clock, in the manner of Blaise Bontems (1814-1893) circa 1880 Of exquisite quality, the large clock, possibly for an exhibition, of architectural form, the domed top, housing a painted scene with central bird automaton with brightly coloured plumage, extending to a case flanked by Corinthian columns, the stepped case raised on four paw and acanthus scroll supports, detailed to lower apron and columns with polychrome foliate enamel designs, the glazed door revealing gilt dial with gilt chapter ring with black Roman numerals and further detailed with two subsidiary dials detailed with fine quality scrolling lotus and chrysanthemum tendrils, the two-train movement striking on a gong, stamped A1, made in France and numbered S888 5.8, 92cm high.
A large early 20th Century Spanish "La Cibeles" automaton as an organ grinder with organ and donkey with paper label inscribed "Programa - Orchids in the Moonlight (1) Granada Cancion (2) and Si vas a Calatayud p.d. (3), manufactured by Faventia of Barcelona CONDITION REPORTS Case with various signs of wear, missing sand board to the front, various scratches, scuffs, marks and chips etc throughout. Various signs of wear to the figure - cracks to his head, chips and scratches etc throughout, very worn shoes. Tail is off the donkey, very worn in sections, play worn etc, unknown if in working order as wire has been cut, strings are severely de-tuned. We have had the cylinder rotating by winding the handle. A LATE 19TH CENTURY SONG BIRD BOX, in a Continental silver gilt and enamel case of rectangular outline with rounded corners, the oval hinged lid opening to reveal the feathered automaton through a pierced grill, in polychrome champleve and Limoges, enamelled with an alpine scene and floral bouquets of predominantly blue background, the underside and sides fully engraved with floral and scallop designs, complete with ratchet key, approximately 95mm x 60mm x 35mm (a/f, this item is not in working order). A mid-18th century oak cased eight day longcase clock by William Coulton of York, the arched brass Roman dial with outer Arabic minute track, matted centre, subsidiary seconds at noon, chamfered date aperture at six, signed, within gilt sea serpent spandrels and Tempus Fugit roundel to arch with winged figure automaton, the case with oversized caddy top hood on turned pillars, over a slender trunk with arched door, on base with bracket feet, 85in. (216cm) high.
An 18th Century painted mahogany Automaton longcase clock by Edward Mann of London, the 12ins silvered dial with Roman and Arabic numerals and with central seconds dial and date aperture, with spandrels raised painted panels decorated with automaton musicians, the arch showing phase of the moon and high water at London Bridge, to the eight day three train six pillar movement striking and chiming on nine bells, contained in dark finished mahogany case later decorated with musical trophies, baskets of flowers, floral sprays and trailing floral ornament, the plinth base decorated with oval panel of seated classical female, with hood swept top, double moulded cornice, fluted uprights and turned, fluted and brass stopped pillars to hood, the shaped trunk door flanked by brass stopped quarter fluted columns and the base with raised astragal mouldings and double plinth base, 96ins high
19th Century German 5¾-inch Symphonion Automaton Musical Box, the cam-operated card band figures (mostly missing) together with a Monkey on a Penny Farthing, the movement numbered '242097', also labelled '242097' to base,with single comb and crank-wind motor, in grained case with colour transfer, together with twelve discs, 32cm high.
An early 20th century French triple singing bird cage clockwork automaton. With a domed gilt wirework cage housing the three colourful creatures chirping, with tilting heads and moving tails; one of which is perched. Raised on a waisted octagonal gesso plinth, 52cm. Condition Report. To be used as a guide only. Working, mechanism does make unnecessary noise when running. Some gilded areas re painted.
