A mid-19th century mahogany eight day longcase clock, the 13 1/2 inch painted dial signed J Hughes & Co Carnarvon, with centred subsidiary seconds dial within a ring of Roman numerals, the figural painted four continent spandrels, under a painted arch with lion with automaton eyes, the hood with wrythen moulded front corner hood pilasters, over a short crossbanded trunk door, flanked by conforming front corner trunk pilasters, on a crossbanded base with shaped apron and short bracket feet, 231cm high Note: John Hughes is listed as clockmaker working from Poole Street in the mid-19th century
A rare Black Forest carved walnut weight-driven Angelus cuckoo wall clock, Attributed to Johann Baptist Beha, Eisenbach, circa 1875, The wooden-framed triple train weight-driven movement with anchor escapement and wood-rod pendulum carved with Gothic tracery to bob, the striking train with external countwheel and linkages to two bellows and a cuckoo automaton which appears from behind a pair of doors within the gable of the case to announce the hour with a two-note call followed by the hour repeated on a gong, the third train with further countwheel and linkages to a monk who appears within an arched recess beneath the dial to apparently ring a bell set within the tower at six am., twelve noon and six pm., the circular wooden dial applied with bone Gothic Roman numerals and with pierced hands set within Gothic tracery to the front of the architectural case with arched recess beneath the dial and flanked by projecting spiral twist columns to the canted angles, the top with pierced spire containing a pivoted church bell above crotcheted gable incorporating circular doors for the cuckoo automaton flanked by spire finials and castellated parapet to sides, the base with inverted crotchet finials to the shaped pendant apron, (some losses to the case), 82cm (32.25ins) high excluding pendulum. Johann Baptist Beha was born in Oberbrand, 1815 and was trained as a clockmaker by his father,Vinzenz, before setting-up on his own in Eisenbach in 1845. He specialised in cuckoo clocks and through his continuous development became the leading maker of fine and complex examples. His main export markets were to Russia (where he had a distribution warehouse in St. Petersburg) and the British Isles. He died in 1898 leaving the business to be continued by his sons Lorenz and Engelbert. The design of the current lot appears in a surviving drawing by Lorenz Beha dated 1874 and was produced in very small numbers. The monk automaton is activated alongside the Angelus striking which is intended to mark the time of prayer for the Catholic daily liturgy.

FRENCH MUSICAL AUTOMATON. Classic figure with flange neck, Jumeau head stamped in red in back ""DEPOSE TETE JUMEAU 4"". She has a closed mouth, amber paperweight eyes, and well-painted lashes and brows. When the music is wound, she turns her head from side to side, and alternately lifts her right hand to powder her nose and left hand to look in the mirror. Costume is a deep rose pleated silk with lace overlay, matching bonnet and the wig is antique brown human hair. Shoes, socks, and base cover appear original and mechanism and music appear to be well functioning. SIZE: Overall including base: 18"" t (46cm). Figure: 14"" t (36cm). CONDITION: Very good, bisque hands in excellent condition. 1-13701
VICHY BANJO PLAYER AUTOMATON. Early piece with composition head, hands, and lower legs. The realistically modeled boy has an open mouth with six upper teeth, blinking glass eyes (functioning but may need some attention), mohair wig, and original clothing. When wound, the boy strums the banjo with his right hand, moves the right leg up and down tapping in time with the music, and moves head up, down and around in gentle circular motion. SIZE: Overall including seat: 22"" t (55cm). Figure seated: 16"" t (41cm). CONDITION: Very good, other than deterioration to silk trousers and cap. Windup mechanism functioning but missing the thumb blade to wind. 1-14040
MUSICAL CLOCKWORK AUTOMATON. Figure has a flange neck unmarked Jumeau head with closed mouth, brown paperweight eyes, and well-painted lashes and brows. She stands at a table holding an oval basket of flowers. When the music is wound, she raises and lowers her arms, and the basket goes up and down. Each time she raises the basket a different item ""magically"" appears underneath. Her hands are made of bisque, costume appears to be mostly original. Die on table is a possible replacement. SIZE: Overall including base: 15-1/2"" (39cm). Figure: 12"" t (31cm). CONDITION: Overall very good with strong music and well functioning mechanism. 1-14043
BALLERINA AUTOMATON ON TIN PLATFORM. French fashion doll head and shoulder most likely by F.G. with blue paperweight eyes, carton and cloth covered body with bisque hands. Costume appears to be original and doll is mounted on a green painted tin platform with three wheels, probably made by Theroude. SIZE: Overall: 14-1/2"" (37cm). Doll: 11"" t (28 cm). ALL ORIGINAL FRENCH MUSICAL AUTOMATON. Very nice piece with little girl dressed in party clothes with cloth flower in left hand and waving a tambourine in the right. When wound, music plays, head moves side-to-side, left arm with cloth flower raises up and down, and right hand swivels ever so slightly with tambourine. The flange neck bisque head is incised ""FG (in a scroll)"". Music box is contained in the base and it is covered with a gold velvet material. SIZE: 16"" t (41cm) including base. 12"" t (31cm) figure. CONDITION: Very good, with age deterioration to costume. 1-14042
