ATTRIBUTED TO REGINA GOLDSCHEIDER, Vienna, early 20th century, a polychrome painted terracotta figure of a young fisherboy, 47 1/4" high, on an ebonised wooden stool, trademark plaque verso The Goldscheider firm was founded in 1885 by Friedrich Goldscheider in Vienna. He recognised the importance of the orientalist movement at that time and decided to create a particular style of oriental terracotta sculptures. The models were designed by renowned artists including Arthur Strasser and portrayed the physical characters and the emotions of North African and African American subjects. Friedrich died in Nice in 1897 and his wife Regina took over the business introducing the company trademark in 1900. The firm went into liquidation in 1984.
