Great War Uniform Grouping of Major Richard Watkin Richards MC Royal Welsh Fusiliers, fine untouched grouping consisting of his original 1915 dated cuff rank tunic with bronze officers regimental collar badges above bronze territorial T’s. Name label and date 1915 to the inside of the breast pocket. Officers regimental tunic buttons to the pockets, front and shoulders. The tunic cuffs with rank lace, leather trim and majors crowns. Large lower pockets to the tunic, typical of WW1 cuff ranks. To the lower sleeve of one arm is bullion embroidered wound stripe. Stitch marks to the collar where regimental black tallies were once present. Accompanying the cuff rank is a 1917 pattern shoulder rank tunic constructed from a whip cord material. Regimental brass buttons to the front, pockets and shoulders. Bronze regimental collar badges. Above breast pocket is medal ribbons for the Military Cross and 1914-15 star. To each shoulder is embroidered Majors rank crowns and black tallies regimental distinction stitched to collar. Lower sleeve with bullion embroidered wound stripe. Fine condition cloth lining with lower shell dressing pocket. The last tunic in the grouping is another 1917 pattern shoulder rank with brass regimental buttons, regimental tally ribbons to collar but missing regimental collar badges and any rank insignia. This tunic does however still have the same embroidered wound stripe and clear evidence where medal ribbons have been removed from breast. Accompanying the tunics is an original typed order, to at this point, “Captain R W Richards 4th Att 9th R.W.F, Please note that you are detailed to report to OC NO 2 Anti-Aircraft section camp today for temporary duty as Machine Gun officer.” All tunics have some scattered moth damage. Accompanied by copies of his medal index card. At the time of going to press we have not been able to confirm a London Gazette date for the Military Cross, however the award is stated on his MIC and medal ribbons to the tunic. An interesting research project. (3 items) London Gaz 14th JAN 1916 page 564 and 589 for award of MC. He is shown as Second Lieutenant Richard RICHARDSRoyal Welsh Fusiliers. Territorial Force
