Popish Plot The Tryals of Robert Green Henry Berry and Lawrence Hill for the murder of Sir Edmondbury Godfrey one of his Majesties Justices of the Peace London 1679. Unbound 92pp folio in good condition. One of the most celebrated of all unsolved murders which still sparks controversy to this day. Godfrey was a member of a shadowy group of high ranking courtiers known as the ‘Peyton Gang’ who knew of the notorious ‘Treaty of Dover’ whereby Charles II agreed to return England to Catholicism in return for money and troops provided by Louis XIV of France. The Payton Gang hatched a plot to depose Charles and create a new Republic astonishingly led by Richard Cromwell. Godfrey was later found in a ditch apparently killed by his own sword but it was later proved that he had been strangled. It was also stated that his body had been mutilated by a strange group of men who had turned up to the scene before the authorities. The three men arrested and convicted of his murder were stooges and were clearly innocent. Just who killed him has remained a mystery ever since with some suggesting that his murder was engineered by supporters of Titus Oates in order to whip up fervour against the Catholics as part of the Popish Plot – while a more likely explanation is that he was executed by the King’s Secret Service because he knew too much about the secret Treaty of Dover. Whatever the truth it is certainly a fact that conspiracy theories are not of modern invention – and this event from the 17th century still attracts theorists to this day. Together with ‘The Tryal of William Staley Goldsmith for speaking Treasonable Words against his most sacred Majesty and upon full evidence found guilty of High Treason’ London 1678. Unbound 12pp folio.
