REPORTS ON THE HAMBURG-NUENGAMME CONCENTRATION CAMP (3) Incredibly detailed grouping of three retained carbon copies of prisoners' statements, likely collected for use at the Nuremberg Trials ca. 1946, each providing chilling details of the shocking conditions at the Nuengamme concentration camp and the atrocities committed therein. INCLUDES: a statement from witness 'Hagenah', 1p. 8vo., concerning the brutality of camp commander SS-Oberscharfuhrer Emanuel Eichler. In part: '...Eichler was brutal and coarse; he used to boast, among other things, that he was the executioner of Husum. This was the impression he produced on us also. He gave orders for amusement to prisoners who did not need to work - there were, in the final weeks, only about 100 of them. In addition, Eichler, together with some SS guards, beat a man who apparently attempted to escape so severely that the latter suffered four wounds in the head, a broken left arm, a displaced left kidney and several fractures from kicks. Eichler gave orders that no bandaging was to be applied. The doctor and I, however, bandaged him immediately. Eichler came back around 2300 hours, and wanted to see the man. When he set eyes on him, he tore the bandage from his face, and struck both the doctor and myself for doing it...He plundered the Red Cross parcels, and shared the booty with SS Rottenfuhrer Maas; E....'; WITH: a similar statement, 1p. 4to., Aug. 23, 1945 by Franziska Turowski, in part: '...Report on the conditions at the firm of Jung, in the Witternstrasse, Hamburg Wilhelmsburg, where prisoners from the Neuengamme Concentration Camp...were employed...the treatment of prisoners by the foremen and the SS was mean and brutal. The firm demanded an output from our people which could not be attained, on account of their weak physical condition which was further affected by deficiencies in food; they got only a litre of thin soup from the firm, as they themselves have testified. In order to drive the workers on to still greater efforts, the firm gave special privileges on a generous scale to the foremen who, on their part, incited the prisoners to work by the well-known methods. The firm of Jung must also be held responsible for failing to observe the required safety practices in connection with the clearing-up work done by prisoners. For this reason, it came about, (among other things), that one prisoner lost his life and another was severely injured...'; WITH: a similar statement, 1p. 4to., by political prisoner Michael Muller, in part: '...Report on Unterscharfuhrer/Rapportfuhrer Dreimann...for several years a hut commander in the Neuengamme camp, and finally became company sergeant-major...Dreimann behaved particularly brutally in respect of the ill-treatment and killing of prisoners. He took special pleasure, when he rode his bicycle across the parade ground...carrying a rawhide whip and striking out indiscriminately at the prisoners standing there. He behaved particularly cruelly towards sick prisoners, lashing them if they wished to transfer from the barrack block to the hospital with his riding whip. He had great sport with prisoners who were to be hanged, when he was taking them to the place of execution. Out of purely depraved pleasure he called those condemned to die by insulting names, such as 'filthy swine', 'Communist sow'; he himself regularly struck them in the face with his riding whip. He also distinguished himself on the occasion of the shooting of 59 Russian officers; he came out of the bunker dripping with blood, and took pride in having shot 21 of them personally. On the next morning, the heroes of this massacre...boasted about how many each of them had killed...he had beaten to death, out of completely sadistic pleasure, prisoners in the Wittenberg working party...' Some copy just a little blurred, else ver`y good. With full translations.

REPORTS ON THE HAMBURG-NUENGAMME AND BEHNDORF CONCENTRATION CAMPS (2) Incredibly detailed pair of retained carbon copies of prisoners' statements, likely collected for use at the Nuremberg Trials ca. 1946, each providing frightening details of the horrific conditions at the Nuengamme and Behndorf/Helmstedt concentration camps, and the atrocities committed there. INCLUDES: a statement submitted by four named Polish prisoners, 1p. 4to., in part: '...SS Unterscharfuhrer Dreimann...was designated as the fiend of Neuengamme. He exercised, during the period from mid-May 1943 onwards, a rule of terror among the prisoners which cannot be described here in words. We, the undersigned witnesses, give the following information and some examples of his behaviour and actions...The beatings or brutal whippings which were carried out in the block commander's room were, in every case, the result of orders from him. He himself took a sufficient personal part in them for it to be established, at the outset, that Dreimann was a sadist, a person with overwhelming perversions who, unmoved by any human feelings, has exercised at full capacity his violent passions and brutal treatment on the defenseless prisoners. Dreimann's speciality lay in his predilection for kicking prisoners ruthlessly in the belly, the testicles or the shins. With the whip, he normally struck people across the face or on the head. He did it in such a savage manner that the person struck was no longer recognizable as a human being. These beatings with stick or whip were ordered by him for the most trivial offences, or were actually carried out by him. Dreimann had the chief responsibility for the executions which were carried out in the bunker. Here Dreimann went so far on his own authority that he carried out hangings of his own free choice, and without bothering about the victims' nationality...prisoners who had attempted to escape or had done bad work, which he treated as sabotage, and accordingly handed over those concerned to be hanged. He went so far as to subject prisoners who were to be hanged to 4 or 5 days starvation beforehand. Dreimann was the executioner of Neuengamme...[he] dealt personally with the hanging of over 80 Netherlanders who had taken part in the resistance movement in Holland. Dreimann forced the Netherlanders in turn to hang each other and to take the bodies down. In addition, there is to be put to his account the hanging of a group of Czech nationals, who were brought into the camp as alleged resistance fighters. The murder of Russian prisoners-of-war who had absconded from a P.0.W.camp was also his doing; he lent a hand in ruthlessly hanging them. in 1944, 400-500 Hungarian Jews were delivered to the camp. In the space of a couple of months;, over half the numbers in this particular train load were annihilated. Here Dreimann approached the individual working groups personally, in order to give instructions himself as to how they were to be wiped out. Very few of these Jews are still alive...He took the possessions of prisoners which were of personal interest to himself, in order to keep them for his own purposes above all, precious stones, gold, tobacco and good soap, etc...as he roamed through the blocks and sought out prisoners...over any triviality, to thrash them in an inhuman fashion...' Ragged top margin not affecting content; WITH: a similar statement from prisoner 'E. Bosch', held at Behndorf/Helmstedt concentration camp, 1p. 14to., in part: '...on the I.B.N. company, formerly the Ascania Works [Berlin]...There worked at the I.B.N. factory 200 male prisoners, 2000 women prisoners and 800 German civilians, together with 3200 foreigners, such as Russians, Poles, Dutch, Belgian and French. Treatment there was very bad. The daily work period amounted to 12 hours...The biggest and worst slave-drivers were Decker, the general manager, and Klein, the engineer, both inhabitants of Berlin. They vented their ill-humor on every occasion on the prisoners. They showed no restraint even in respect of the civilian workers, whether German or foreign; it was all the same to these two characters, so that their rancor often spread over to the civilians as well. Both of these gentlemen put a number of foreigners into the concentration camp. If there was any confrontation, they always threatened people with the concentration camp, so that opposition on the part of the working personnel was impossible...The building management for both of these air-raid shelters was in the hands of party members. The building management as such was subordinate to the SS. In charge of it was Obersturmfuhrer Busch...This man personally felled prisoners to the ground. If a civilian worker wanted to take leave, this was refused, so that workers took the law into their own hands, and left work without permission. For this, many of them were put into the labor camp. Among the works management itself, those who particularly distinguished themselves were the senior foreman Brem, who struck prisoners daily with a stout stick, and the two foremen, Bohm and Schroder...Paul Mertens, the senior foreman in this firm...particularly distinguished himself. He harassed and beat prisoners almost to death. His colleagues often asked and urged him to desist. The answer he made was: 'These criminals must work until they drop dead.'...' Very good, with full translations.

Lot 35

Five leaves from an extremely large codex of John of Freiburg, Summa confessorum, in Latin, manuscript on parchment [France, early fourteenth century] Five leaves (including two bifolia), double column of 51 lines of a fine rounded early gothic bookhand, quotations underlined in red, red rubrics, paragraph marks in alternate red or blue, small initials in red or blue with contrasting penwork, 2 larger initials variegated in red or blue with elaborate penwork infill and penwork extensions in margin trailing into long whip-like penstrokes, one catchword at end of partial bifolium, reused on an account book dated 1567 and 1569, some tears, folds, discolouration and small holes, overall fair and presentable condition, each leaf approximately 370 by 290mm. The Dominican theologian, John of Freiburg, composed his gigantic Summa confessorum in the years 1297-8. These works were an extension to the works of Raymond of Pennafort and William of Rennes' gloss on that work. They were very popular in the Middle Ages, and both survive in approximately 170 recorded manuscripts (T. Kaeppeli and E. Panella, Scriptores Ordinis Praedicatorum medii aevi, 1970-93, ii. 430-6 and iv. 152).

Lot 43

Two leaves from a large English manuscript of Petrus Riga, Aurora, in the first redaction of Aegidius of Paris, in Latin verse, on parchment [England, second half of fourteenth century (c. 1375)] Two single leaves, each with 32 lines in a small and rounded English gothic hand much influenced by secretarial forms (with parts of the text for Exodus, lines 149-212 of that part of the poem, and for I Kings, lines 185-248 of that part of the poem), paragraph marks in red or dark blue, rubrics in red and set off in outer margin with paragraph marks there, running titles in main hand in red, four larger initials in dark blue with ornate red penwork with whip-like extensions in margins, one leaf torn away at extremity of foot (without affect to text, and probably once with a pasted on medieval repair which has since fallen away), the same leaf with tape marks in upper margin from last mounting, a few small spots, else in excellent and fresh condition, each approximately 285 by 198mm. Provenance:1. The large and impressive parent manuscript of these leaves was owned by the Grosvenor family, Dukes of Westminster; their sale Sotheby's, 11 July 1966, lot 229 (when it had 267 leaves but was already missing a gathering and about 13 other leaves).2. Francis Edwards, bookseller, who acquired it in the Sotheby's sale, before removing three damaged leaves that had had their initials cut out, and advertising the rest of the codex in a number of his subsequent catalogues.3. At some time later more leaves were removed from the main codex, or it was completely dispersed, perhaps in North America. One from the collection of Bernard Rosenthal (1920-2017) appeared as Quaritch cat. 1348, Bookhands of the Middle Ages VIII (2007), no. 96, and other leaves now reside in Marquette University in Milwaukee as donations of Dr. and Mrs John Pick, as well as the University of South Carolina, their early MS. 125.4. These leaves from the collection of Roger Martin (1939-2020) of Grimsby. Text:This text, alongside the Bible and the works of Peter Lombard, was one of the fundamental textbooks used in the thirteenth-century universities of France and Italy. The author was a canon of Rheims cathedral, and most probably died in 1209. It is a distillation of the historical passages of the Bible in verse, with a commentary and allegorical discussion. The leaf now in the University of South Carolina importantly reveals that the text here is the first redaction by Aegidius of Paris, composed c. 1200 (see P.E. Beichner, Aurora: Petri Rigae Biblia Versificata, 1965).
