A rare ivory satin doublet and hose worn to the coronation of King George IV, 19th July, 1821, the doublet's front panels adorned with couched gilt threads in diamond repeats in 'van-dyke' fringed vertical bands, domed bullion covered buttons, the mancherons, sleeves and tabbed hem applied with gilt braid and lace, high stand collar, rosettes to the shoulders; with matching trunk hose, chest approx 97cm, 38in, waist 112cm, 44in (2)The lavish and expensive costumes worn by the aristocracy to attend George IV's coronation were Elizabethan/Jacobean themed to recall England's past heritage. George was held in low esteem at the time due to his treatment of his estranged wife, Caroline of Brunswick, and his attempts to divorce her. She unsuccessfully attempted to participate in the event. Parliament voted the astonishing sum of £240,000 towards the cost of the ceremony (George III's coronation had only cost £70,000) in the hopes that it would rekindle his popularity. Provenance: 2nd Earl Camden, 1759-1840, created a Marquess in 1812. CONDITION REPORT: Doublet and hose are lined in white cotton, lining is generally good condition. There are perspiration stains and splits in silk at both underarms. The doublet side seams may have been taken in, possibly a last minute alteration? Gold lace and braid is lustrous and bright. The lining has darts added to reduce volume - again possibly a last minute adjustment. Perspiration stains at underarms on lining. Breeches: generally good condition. Very slight staining to cotton lining at crotch, a few small spot stains on waistband lining, one small rear right waist button is worn. Stain to silk on far left gold strip and 2 of the front strips. Small hole in satin at crotch. Very generous size, waist is 42in.

CONDITION REPORT: Slight scuffing to satin, lined in cotton, satin has holes and is perishing to left elbow area. Thinning, puckering of silk at both underarms. Gold braid and lace is bright and lustrous. Lining is generally good, small brown stain to inside cuff lining (minor).
MARC CHAGALL (RUSSIAN-FRENCH 1887-1985)L'homme à la barbe, circa 1922-23lithograph on paper32 x 24 cm (12 5/8 x 9 1/2 in.)PROVENANCECollection of the artist Karlis Miesnieks, RigaAcquired from the family of the above by Moscow Cultural Business center in the 1990s, RigaAcquired by the present owner from Arthur Avotinsh, RigaEXPERTISEA letter of a research and expertise from Ye. Zhukova, N. Markova and I. Shumanova of the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, 2004A copy of a letter from Mara Litse, Art Historiann.b. Copies of all above expertises available upon request. LOT NOTESThis very rare lithograph by Marc Chagall of a bearded Jewish man was based by Chagall on his original drawing of the same name of 1911, now in the collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. According to the research performed by both Mara Litse and Ye. Zhukova, several interesting facts about its provenance, rarity, and dating can be noted. While this lithograph is exceedingly rare, there does exist another copy in the permanent collection of the State Tretyakov Museum in Moscow, which was gifted to the Museum by the well known collector George Costakis in 1977, and has been in numerous exhibitions and Chagall Retrospectives as "Old Man," "Head of a Jew", and "Old Jew" amongst other titles (New York, 1981; Moscow, 1988; Athens 1996). According to the expertise, these two copies were compared by Ms. Litse and Ms. Zhukova and were found to be identitical. The currently offered drawing was originally in the collection of the noted Latvian artist Karlis Miesnieks, who acquired it during his studies in Berlin in 1922-23, where he had seen Chagall's works at the Erste Russiche Kunstaustellung at Galerie van Diemen & Co. in 1922. Also in that year 1922, Chagall was actively studying lithography in Berlin at the studio of Hermann Struck, a fellow Jewish artist, master printmaker, and later Jewish activist. A well known and published painting by Miesniks that he painted in 1923, Still LIfe with Doll, shows this lithograph posted on the wall (see reference image here). For these reasons, as the expertises note, it is reasonable to assume that the current lithograph was made around 1922, and no later than 1923.
TOULOUSE-LAUTREC HENRI DE: (1864-1901) French Painter & Illustrator. A.L.S., T-Lautrec, three pages, 8vo, Paris, n.d. (1898?), to 'Mon cher Theo' (van Rysselberghe), in French. The artist informs his friend that he has returned from Spain, where he met Dario, and is now leaving for London in four days, asking van Rysselberghe to supply him with the address of a dealer in London where he can buy some items. Toulouse-Lautrec also enquires as to when his correspondent will be in Paris next as they must go to see a home when it is finished. In concluding he remarks that a mutual acquaintance will be going to Brussels shortly and will meet van Rysselberghe. Autograph letters of Toulouse-Lautrec are rare as a result of his untimely death at the age of 36. One slight paperclip rust stain to the first page, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Theo van Rysselberghe (1862-1926) Belgian Neo-Impressionist Painter who played a pivotal role in the European art scene at the turn of the 20th century. Co-founder of Les XX (1883). Rysselberghe had first met Toulouse-Lautrec in 1887 and was highly appreciative of his talent. Toulouse-Lautrec's family were Anglophiles and, though not as fluent as he pretended to be, the artist spoke English well enough to travel to London, exhibiting works at Goupil's Gallery in May 1898. Whilst in London Toulouse-Lautrec made posters, including the 'Confetti' poster, and the bicycle advert 'La Chaine Simpson'. It was at this time that he also met and befriended Oscar Wilde. Toulouse-Lautrec immersed himself in the colourful and theatrical life of Paris in the late 19th century, allowing himself to produce a collection of enticing, elegant and provocative images of the modern, and often decadent, life of those times. He is among the best-known painters of the Post-Impressionist period, along with Cezanne, Van Gogh and Gauguin.
