Saucer with two rim chips and associated hairline cracking.Crescent-shaped dish with slight discolouration to yellow-ground. Minor wear to gilding. Very slight wear to gilding throughout.
An Indian tiger skin (Panthera Tigris Tigris) circa 1935, by Van Ingen & Van Ingen of Mysore, the head with open jaw and glass eyes, the skin with original canvas backing with Van Ingen stencilling and care label, taken by Group Captain Dick Maydwell (1913-2006) under licence at Poona, 246cm nose to tail, 191cm across the fore-limbs, 170cm across the rear limbs/Note: Group Captain Dick Maydwell was in Poona in the mid 1930s where he developed his love of game shooting, the present lot was shot under licence during that time/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: Overall I would say this is in good condition for its age. The main area of concern are the tips of the ears which are worn and need to be restored. There is a little flaking to the nose. The front paws each have 5 claws, the back paws each have 4. There is some wear both to the skin and backing in line with age and usage. Viewing recommended.

The canvas has good tension and is in plane. There is evidence of mould growth on the reverse of the painting and a thick layer of dust. The paint layers are in a stable condition but have suffered from wear and abrasion. There are areas of overpaint across the painting, for example the lace of the collar has been largely reconstructed and the abraded original is visible below. The varnish is slightly dull and yellowed but even overall. There are deep scuffs and scratches in the upper half. The gilding on the frame has suffered from water damage with extensive wear and loss. The painting is poorly held in the frame with bent nails. 175 PC old Christie's stencil to the reverse. Braided cord old hanging to the reverse.

The canvas is formed from two sections with an addition above the sitter's head and a horizontal seam. There is an old patch at the lower edge of the canvas on the reverse. The paint layer has some areas of wrinkling and raised paint following the canvas weave. Old losses have been retouched, the retouchings are slightly darkened but acceptable from a normal viewing distance. The main area of retouching is in the upper section of the canvas above the sitter's head. The varnish is slightly yellowed with a light layer of dust. The frame is slightly worn in areas but in a good condition overall.

The panel is formed from two boards in vertical alignment, there are paper reinforcements at the top and bottom. Movement in the central join at the top and bottom with cracks in the paint layer. There are vertical lines of cracks and slightly raised paint following the grain of the wood, mainly along the central join. The paint layer is in a stable condition overall. There is a thick, yellowed and degraded varnish layer which has started to become opaque and in some areas is flaking off the painting. There appears to be areas of retouching although the extent is obscured by the varnish. Old losses to the frame and the gilding has been painted with bronze paint.

There is a light layer of surface dust and some insect spots. Some wear to the gilded surface, but overall the frame is stable.

Loose in its frame. Might benefit from a light clean and new varnish. Old stretcher bar marks can be seen from the front.

The earliest sketchbook in the collection dates back to Van Gogh’s time in Nuenen in the Netherlands, and the last is the sketchbook he used in the French village of Auvers-sur-Oise, where Van Gogh spent his final days. The other sketchbooks contain work from Nuenen, Antwerp and Paris.
