Three leaves from a Book of Hours, each with delicately painted flowers and in one case a jewel, attributable to Cornelia van Wulfschkercke, a Carmelite nun from the Carmelite convent of Sion, Bruges, or her immediate workshop, in Latin, manuscript leaves on parchment [Low Countries (Bruges), c. 1510-20] Three leaves, each with 17 lines in a rounded late gothic bookhand with numerous ornamental penstrokes, terracotta-red rubrics, one leaf with a single 2-line initial in brown heightened with liquid gold penstrokes on burgundy grounds, each with finely painted realistic flower cuttings and on one occasion a medieval jewel in the form of cross in its vertical outer border, these identifiable as the work of Cornelia van Wulfschkercke or her immediate workshop (see below), some small spots and stains, else excellent and fresh condition, each leaf 126 by 87mm. From a dispersed Book of Hours identified by A.M.W. As-Vijvers as part of a small group of such books produced in Ghent or Bruges c. 1500-10 with single motifs in the borders. The subsequent tracing of miniature leaves enabled the identification of the artist as Cornelia van Wulfschkercke or her immediate workshop (see A.M.W. As-Vijvers, 'Manuscript Production in a Carmelite Convent: the Case of Cornelia van Wulfschkercke, Books of Hours Reconsidered, 2013, pp. 279-96 and 519-20, especially the prayerbook now Amsterdam, Free Library, MS. XV.05502, and the Ayala-Rodriguez Hours now Brussels, Bibliothèque Royale, MS. IV 104; compare also the flowers here with those in the border of the Prayerbook of Marguerite Clerckx, now Princeton, Garrett MS. 63, reproduced as fig. 10 on p. 290 and pl. 70 on p. 520). Cornelia van Wulfschkercke (d. 1540) entered the Carmelite convent of Sion, Bruges, by 1495, took her vows in 1501, and forged a career as a female illuminator producing numerous books for patrons outside of the convent (see As-Vijvers, 2013 on their commercial output, and note that in 1512 and 1513 Sion rented a stall in the Bruges market arcade where luxury goods were sold: see J. Wilson, 'Marketing Paintings in late Medieval Flanders and Brabant', in Artistes, Artisans et Production artistique at Moyen Age, 1990, p. 624). She was trained as an artist by Grietkin Scheppers in 1503, who herself may have been the widow of an illuminator, and they appear to have both worked on a Gradual (now Paris, Bibliotheque Mazarine, MS. 432), where she is named in the colophon. Many of the convent's inmates were involved in book production and some twenty-three surviving manuscripts can now be identified as their work, with Cornelia van Wulfschkercke at its head. Any Book of Hours attributable to a named artist is a rarity, but a Book of Hours illuminated by a woman is altogether exceptional. From the collection of Roger Martin (1939-2020) of Grimsby.
‡ Document of the Raad van Vlaanderen, reissuing a long grant of Andries Velle, bailiff, and other officials and men of the villages of Voormezele for estates there and in nearby Dikkebus and Vlamertinge, in favour of Roegier Stutin and others, in Flemish, manuscript on parchment [Flanders (probably Gravensteen in Ghent), dated 8 May 1460] Large single-sheet document, in 78 long lines of a small Flemish secretarial hand, opening words in enlarged calligraphic letters, endorsed on turn up on behalf of the council, slits for seal tag, but no seal tags or seal present, endosements of various dates on reverse, damage to head of document repaired with paper on reverse, folds and slight discolouration overall, else in good condition, 513+98 by 645mm. The 'council of Flanders' emerged gradually as a ruling institution over the region, with Duke Philip II the Bold (1342-1404) attempting to found a permanent court at Lille, but Ghent, Bruges, Ypres and the Brugse Vrije refused to recognise its authority. By 1407 it had consolidated its hold over most of Flanders and was relocated to Ghent and its formal statutes were issued in 1409. It then continued as the highest legal authority in Flanders until 1795, when the Austrian Netherlands were annexed by the First French Republic. Few of its surviving records date from as early as the present document, and the grant here and its reissue are not to be found in J. Butinx, Inventaris van het archief van de Raad van Vlaanderen, 1964-79, but Vormezele is noted in a document of 1497-98 (ibid., no. 27799). ‡: A double dagger (‡) indicates that the lot is being sold whilst subject to temporary importation and that VAT is due at the reduced rate (5%) if the lot remains in the UK.
Netherlandish School, 16th CenturyThe Adoration of the Magi oil on panel90.5 x 119cm (35 5/8 x 46 7/8in).Footnotes:The present Adoration of the Magi is an early 16th century Netherlandish School painting, and is presumably the work of an artist active in the Circle of Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533) and reflects the composition of a major work by the Master which is now lost. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Master of the Embroidered Foliage (active in Brussels and Bruges 1480-1510)Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden oil on panel50.2 x 33.8cm (19 3/4 x 13 5/16in).Footnotes:ProvenanceCollection of John Linnell, until sold by order of his trusteesLinnell sale, Christie's, London, 15 March 1918, lot 135Collection of Leopold Hirsch, 10 Kensington Park Gardens, LondonHis sale, Christie's, London, 11 May 1934, lot 105 (for £819 to J.R. Martens (ed.), Le Maître au Feuillage brodé. Démarches d'artistes et méthodes d'attribution d'oeuvres à un peintre anonyme des anciens Pays-Bas du XVe siècle, Lille, 2007, p. 33The unusual name for this early Netherlandish artist was penned by Max J. Friedländer in 1926 when he attributed a group of Madonna and Child in a landscape to 'The Master of the Embroidered Foliage'. In these works he likened the meticulous, repetitive foliage to the repeated pattern of embroidery stitches. Florence Gombert's research reveals that the Master's works were created by a variety of artists from different workshops across Flanders, rather than by a single artist (Gombert, op. cit., 2005). In 2001, Annette Scherer attributed three paintings, including our picture of Adam and Eve to the Master of the Embroidered Foliage (see: A. Scherer, 'Vom Andachtsbild zum Sammlerbild. Varianten des Sündenfalls von Hugo van der Goes', in K. Bergdolt, G. Bonsanti (ed.), Opere e giorni. Studi su mille anni di arte europea dedicati a Max Seidel, Venice, 2001, pp. 363-70). One of the other two versions was formerly in the collection of Dr. Otto Scheider and offered at Christie's, 20 November 2012, lot 86 (49.6 x 33cm). The second version is in the Wilhelm-Hack Museum, Ludwigshafen (47.5 x 33cm, inv. no. 457/42) (see A. Scherer, op.cit., 2005, cat. nos. 24,25,26). All three works are derived from the Hugo van der Goes altarpiece in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (fig. 1) but each differs in the details; a doe only appears in the Ludwigshafen version and a kingfisher can be seen in the left foreground of the present work. The Ludwigshafen and Christie's versions have more in common for each depicts a similar lion, left and Adam in an identical loin cloth. The present work relates closest to the van der Goes altarpiece, as it is the only version where Eve holds the apple in her hand, and Scherer argues that it is likely to be the earliest of the three versions (op. cit, 2007, p. 36). This workshop practice of creating several versions, each with different backgrounds and details, suggests that this composition of 'Adam and Eve' was clearly popular at the time. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Jacob Grimmer (Antwerp circa 1525-1590)A View of Kiel on the Scheldt with Antwerp beyond bears signature '**** BRUEG***' (lower right)oil on panel42.8 x 51.2cm (16 7/8 x 20 3/16in).Footnotes:The present, unpublished, painting is related to the large View of Kiel with Antwerp beyond, dated 1578, in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, which measures 121 x 196 cm (47 6/8 x 77 1/8in) (fig.1). Although different in size, the compositions are very similar, but the 1578 painting shows a more elaborate landscape and also a greater variety of staffage. It seems likely that Grimmer received a commission to make a smaller rendition based on one of his masterpieces. The execution of the landscape elements but also the figures in the present painting are typical for Jacob Grimmer. A date in the 1580s is feasible for the present work. Almost an exact contemporary of Pieter Brueghel the elder, Jacob Grimmer was among the most important 16th century Antwerp landscape painters. His rural landscapes show a clear development moving away from the fantastic panoramas with gigantic rocks of Joachim Patinir, Herri met de Bles and their followers towards a more intimate rendition of the Flemish countryside. Jacob Grimmer was born in Antwerp, the son of Nicolaas and Elisabeth Cops. According to Karel van Mander - in his Schilder-boeck, Haarlem 1604 - Grimmer first learned to paint landscapes from Matthys Cock and later from the unknown Christian van den Queborn. He became a master in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1547, and the next year later he married Lucia van de Wouwer. Their son Abel, born in the early 1570s, became a landscape and architectural painter in his own right. The city of Antwerp succeeded in the 15th century in becoming the successor of Bruges, which until then had been the most important mercantile metropolis of western Europe. At the end of the 15th century, when nearly all the Low Countries were united under the Burgundian and Habsburg dynasties, the economic preeminence of Antwerp over Bruges is indicated by the fact that the majority of foreign merchants transferred their residence to Antwerp. It quickly became the leading commercial centre of western Europe, benefiting from the beginnings of colonial trade and stimulated by the great discoveries of the Portuguese and Spaniards. Extensive urbanization plans were developed to lodge the increasing population, who earned their livelihood in trade, transport, and industry. We are grateful to Dr. Luuk Pijl who endorses the attribution to Jacob Grimmer on the basis of high definition photographs. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: αα Buyers from within the UK: VAT is payable at the prevailing rate on just the Buyer's Premium (NOT the Hammer Price). Attributed to Juan van der Hamen y León (Madrid 1596-1632)A still life with a basket of quinces on a wooden table and damsons hanging from strings on either side oil on canvas39.6 x 57.8cm (15 9/16 x 22 3/4in).Footnotes:Only a handful of artists in Spain would have been capable of painting this hitherto unknown early still life which may, with its centrepiece flanked by fruit hanging from strings, be compared to the unsigned Still life of a Faience Fruit Bowl with Passion Fruit, Crab Apples and Pears, which was thought by the distinguished van der Hamen scholar, the late William B. Jordan to be the artist's work and date from circa 1621 (oil on canvas, 54 x 65 cm., Serra de Alzaga collection, Valencia; see W. B. Jordan, Juan van der Hamen y León and the Court of Madrid, New Haven, 2006, no. 6). The wooden table is unusual in the oeuvre of this artist who more often went on to employ light coloured marble ledges; but a similarly coloured wooden table was employed by Hamen y León in his early Still Life of Sweets and Glassware, in the Museo del Prado which is oil on canvas, signed and dated, 1622 (op. cit. no. 4). It was during this early period that this master established the working pattern of his studio practice and like most early still life painters in Europe, he established a range of picture formats, compositional types and favoured objects that became his stock in trade. Jordan, after 40 years of research on the artist, wrote in his monograph: 'Most of the compositional types for which Van der Hamen is best known are represented by superb examples dated 1621 and 1622.'Adopting some of the essential compositional devices employed by Sánchez Cotán, such as the hanging of fruit and game from strings, van der Hamen fashioned a type of still life uniquely suited to his public at court. In doing this he is believed to have been aware of developments in still life painting outside of Spain as well – such as could be seen in the works of north Italians such as Panfilo Nuvolone and Fede Galizia, or those of Flemish masters like Osias Beert the Elder, Clara Peeters and Frans Snyders. 'Although his fame today has been eclipsed by the long career of Velásquez,' in Jordan's words 'Van der Hamen's star was very bright when his Sevillian rival was just finding his way at the court of the young King Philip IV. When that fire was unexpectedly extinguished at the age of thirty-five, some of his contemporaries, such as the playwright Juan Pérez de Montalvan, lamented the passing of 'the greatest Spaniard of his art who ever lived'.'This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Another drawing of the same subject, signed and dated 1517, now in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (Inv. 4325) shows Huber's distinctive style and meticulous hatching on the cross.Modern scholarship has advanced in recent years and many works accepted by Frans Winzinger in 1979 have now been given to artists in Huber's circle or to his followers, who often produced extremely fine copies of his drawings. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
