Katherine Lloyd (British, active 1923-1950), after Francis CotesThe Young Cricketer: Portrait of Lewis Cagesigned, dated and inscribed 'Lewis Cage AEt 5 after F. Cotes RA 1768' (on the bat, lower left) oil on canvas 157.5 x 113.5cm (62 x 44 11/16in).Footnotes:The original portrait by Francis Cotes was sold by Christies London as lot 21, 15th November, 1996 for a price of £716,500.00 including premium and it is now housed in the museum at Lords. The dimensions are almost identical. This is the footnote that Christies published at the sale of this Katherine Lloyd painting:Francis Cotes's original picture, executed in 1768, remained with the sitter's descendants until bought by Sir Paul Getty at Christie's sale, 15 November 1996, lot 21. The present copy by Katharine Lloyd was commissioned to celebrate the opening of the museum at Lord's in 1953. It hung in the Pavilion for the greater part of the ensuing years until MCC purchased the original painting in 2008. Lewis Cage, whose family seat was Milgate Park in West Kent, is depicted slightly flushed after the rigours of the game with his shirt untucked and left stocking falling down. The young sitter's pose -- derived from Van Dyck -- is nevertheless imbued with a noble presence, the bat of adult size and long row of brass buttons on his waistcoat give him a swaggering air, making him appear exceptionally tall and masterly for a boy of five. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 111

Sundials: A rare and early iron and copper armillary on carved stone pedestal, mid 18th century, 164cm high Armillary spheres which date back to the 4th century B.C. in China, were originally made as models of all the stars and planets in the sky, ie a celestial sphere. Most were reproduced in the 19th and 20th centuries as sundials with the hours and minutes marked on the inside of a central ring using the central pole as a gnomon. This early example is similar to one in the garden of the 17th century Museum van Loon, Amsterdam.

Lot 17

A very rare Venetian opalescent glass vase, circa 1700Of double ogee form moulded with fourteen vertical ribs, the flared neck with a folded rim and a trailed vermicular collar, applied with two curled ribbed hollow handles with pincered ornament in clear glass, set on a hollow ribbed globular knop between collars, on a twelve-sided spreading folded foot, 23.9cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceLady 'Lili' Maria Elisabeth Augusta Cartwright (née von Sandizell)Thence by descent to her son, William Cornwallis Cartwright, Aynhoe Park, OxfordshireThence by family descent to the present ownerVases of this form are very rare and whilst they are recorded in several important collections this would appear to be the only known example in opal glass. A vase of similar form in clear glass with diamond-point decoration is illustrated by Anna-Elisabeth Theuerkauff-Liederwald, Venezianisches Glas der Veste Coburg (1994), p.510-11, no.645, and another in clear glass with damaged handles is in the Museo del Vetro di Murano (accession no. Cl.VI n.01690). The curled handles on both of these vases closely resemble those on the present lot and Theuerkauff-Liederwald notes that their form is unusual. Two vases of comparable shape applied with flowers are in the Danish Royal collection at Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen. They include an example in clear glass containing a lampwork flower bouquet and another in latticinio, both illustrated by Gudmund Boesen, Venetianske Glas på Rosenborg (1960), nos.19 and 50. Another latticinio example is in the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Cologne, illustrated by Brigitte Klesse in the catalogue Glas (1963), p.96, no.181 and by Barovier Mentasti et al., Mille Anni di Arte del Vetro a Venezia (1982), p.146, no.215. See also the damaged clear glass example applied with turquoise lion masks in the Museo del Vetro di Murano (accession no. Cl.VI n.02034). The handles of all of these examples differ from those on the present lot. This vase has very close parallels to small spouted ewers in opal glass, notably the double ogee form, the knop between collars and the use of vermicular trailing around the neck. Only five such ewers appear to be recorded, including two in the Museo Nazionale di San Martino, Naples, illustrated by Barovier Mentasti et al. (1982), pp.164-5, nos.254a and 254b, one in the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Berlin (accession no. K 132), illustrated by Franz Dreier, Venezianische Gläser (1989), p.85, no.69, one in the Musée Ariana in Geneva, illustrated by Erwin Baumgartner, Reflets de Venise (2015), pp.203-4, no.96 and one at Veste Coburg, illustrated by Anna-Elisabeth Theuerkauff-Liederwald (1994), p.406, no.442.The form is also closely related to large ewers or jugs in clear glass. Examples are in the Museo del Vetro di Murano (accession nos. Cl.VI n.01294 and n.01425), in the British Museum (accession no. S.505) illustrated by Hugh Tait, The Golden Age of Venetian Glass (1979), p.57, no.61, in the Rijksmuseum (accession no. NM 8013) illustrated by Pieter Ritsema van Eck, Glass in the Rijksmuseum (1993), p.101, no.141, in Toledo Museum of Art (accession no. 1925.130) and at Rosenborg Castle illustrated by Boesen (1960), no.1. Compare also to the ewer with combed decoration at Rosenborg illustrated by Boesen (1960), no.88.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 27

A façon de Venise vase, 17th centuryMoulded in the form of a scallop shell, the tapering cylindrical neck with a trailed vermicular collar, applied with two trailed and pincered scroll handles in turquoise-blue glass, set on a ribbed hollow flattened knop between collars and a folded conical foot, 20.5cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceLady 'Lili' Maria Elisabeth Augusta Cartwright (née von Sandizell)Thence by descent to her son, William Cornwallis Cartwright, Aynhoe Park, OxfordshireThence by family descent to the present ownerA pair of very similar shell-shaped vases from the Soulages Collection is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (accession nos. 5511-1859 and 5513-1859). Other examples are in the Wallace Collection (accession no. C540) illustrated by Suzanne Higgott in the catalogue (2011), pp.112-3 and 379, no.29, in the Rijksmuseum (accession no. RBK 1984-49) illustrated by Pieter C Ritsema van Eck, Glass in the Rijksmuseum, Vol.1 (1993), p.106, no.147, and at Veste Coburg (accession nos. HA 397 and HA 402). It is thought that the form of these vessels may be influenced by earlier Roman examples. Compare with the 1st century AD amphoriskos illustrated by Niwa Kunina, Ancient Glass in the Hermitage Collection (1997), pp.126-7, no.92.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Early 20th century Van Ingen of Mysore Leopard skin rug with full head mount and black felt backing, measuring 260cm nose to tail, 157cm paw to paw. Numbered on underside of head 1 22654.Provenance: Shot by John Francis Todhunter (1905-1989), between 1931 and 1939 whilst he was posted in India as an Artillery Officer in the North-West at Ambala. By family legend, Todhunter and two others were sitting around a camp fire after a days hunting when one of the men noticed movement just behind Todhunter, who happened to be the only one with a rifle on his knee. When it became obvious that the leopard had singled them out as its supper, Todhunter readied himself, and it proved to be in the nick of time, because he shot the beast as it was in mid leap towards them.Condition report: More information has kindly been passed onto us: Number 22654 was taken in by Van Ingen on 10th February 1936 in the name of J.F. Todhunter. It was one of three Leopard (Panther), one Muntjac and one Chital handed in on the same day by Todhunter.

An important early 18th Century miniature Dutch Museum in a Bottle, depicting the 'Felix Meritis' Building in Amsterdam, a three storey red brick classical building with stacked roof, crested triangular centre surrounded by balustrades, the front with five bay windows over three floors, the centre set with domed windows and half classical columns, with typical fanlight door, and with figures gathered outside in period attire. All contained inside a glass bottle, approx. 33cms (13") high. (1)Note: It was built according to a winning design by the architect Jacob Otten Husly for the new society called Felix Meritis established in 1776 for Music, Drawing, Physics, Commerce and Literature in the modern neo-classical style. Husly had won a similar design contest for the city hall of Groningen in the previous year. The building itself was meant to exemplify the Enlightenment ideals the society stood for. The classical temple façade with its colossal Corinthian pilasters and pediment represent the society's five departments with five sculptures representing the visual arts and architecture, literature, trade, natural sciences and music. The interior includes original 18th-century features such as the central staircase, the oval concert hall (renowned for its acoustics) and the domed roof - underneath which there used to be an astronomical observatory. On 31 October 1788 the building of the same name opened its doors. The society focused on the promotion of arts and sciences in a broader sense than the artists' collectives popular at the time. Husly was himself a board member of the Amsterdam City Drawing Academy Stadstekenacademie, that had close contacts with the Oeconomischen Tak van de Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (economics branch of the Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen, which met in the Trippenhuis). The society was abolished in 1888.Felix Meritis' oval concert hall was the main music hall in Amsterdam until late into the 19th century and enjoyed a great international reputation. Many famous musicians performed there, including Robert and Clara Schumann, Camille Saint-Saëns, Johannes Brahms and Julius Röntgen. The orchestra of Felix Meritis was regarded as the best of the Netherlands and accompanied many Dutch premieres, directed by conductors such as Johannes Bernardus van Bree. Thus, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique had their Dutch premiere in the concert hall of Felix Meritis. The small hall of the Concertgebouw is a replica of this concert hall.
