7th century BC. An impressive bronze vessel mount of a finely modelled bull's head with powerful features, horns curving up, detailing of fur to the front of the head, engraved lines to delineate the eyes, snout and mouth; attached to plate in form of outspread wings, tail below, with engraved details to the feathers; attachment holes to wings and tail. Cf. Mildenberg Collection, no.18 (reign of Argishti II, King of Uratu, 713-685 BC); and for a similar example in the British Museum, see accession number 91242; and also see Sotheby's, New York, 17 December 1998, lot 218. 900 grams, 17.5cm (6 7/8"). Property of a European gentleman; formerly acquired on the German art market before 1980. Accompanied by X-Ray Fluorescence metal analysis certificate number 00955-2018WA. The fitting would have been one of four to the rim of a large bronze cauldron. Urartu was centered in eastern Anatolia, around Lake Van; the capital, Tushpa, was located on the eastern shore of the lake, situated on a high and elongated rock outcrop. Most sites boasted a well-built temple situated at the highest point, as well as a number of large storage rooms containing rows of large vessels for storing oil and grains, and massive well-built fortification walls. A wooden shabti box with gesso and pigment; decorated to the sides with the Four Sons of Horus, Imsety (human-headed), Qebehsenuef (hawk-headed), Duamutef (jackal-headed) and Hapi (baboon-headed), each with mummiform body and holding a crook; sides of each panel with border of horizontal stripes of polychrome pigments making the shape of a naos shrine; lid to top with red pigment to edges, pegs to side for securing lid to box. 840 grams, 23cm (9"). Late Period, 664-332 BC. A group of large glazed composition amulets consisting of: the Four Sons of Horus with mummiform bodies, striated tripartite wigs and broad collar, to the hands a long strip of cloth looped to the top; a heart scarab with detailed carapace, separate wings with detailing to the feathers; a djed column with Atef crown to the top; head of Horus with hawk head, striated wig with sun-disc to top; each with holes to edge for attachment. 196 grams total, 4.5-10cm (2 - 4"). Ptolemaic Period, 332-30 BC. A cartonnage mask with gesso and gilded surface; wearing a tripartite wig with hawk to top of head with sun-disc; painted with panels to either side with frieze of uraeus snakes with sun-disc to top of head; below, the Four Sons of Horus with mummifom bodies before Osiris seated on a throne with mummiform body holding crook and flail, wearing Atef crown; panel below with four seated deities wearing tripartite wigs, holding was sceptres; wadjet eyes to the side, gilded face with painted eyes and eyebrows; panel to chest with Broad Collar, horizontal panel below with diamond pattern; to the back standing mummiform figure wearing tripartite wig and false beard; areas to surface with mummification resin; mounted on a custom-made stand. A wooden coffin panel with gesso and painted surface; to the top a Broad Collar with floral patterns in bands; figure of the goddess Nut wearing tripartite wig with sun-disc to the top, kneeling and wearing a close fitting dress, arms outstretched with wings below; five vertical columns of hieroglyphs in polychrome. 3.16 kg, 82cm (32 1/4").
