Rare Black Drummer Automaton, c. 1900 With papier-mâché head, brown glass eyes, articulated eyelids and mouth, carved wood hands holding drum sticks, a large brass drum suspended at his waist, the going-barrel timer motor in his torso causing the soldier to beat a rhythm on the drum while turning and nodding his head, blinking and moving his mouth as though calling out marching orders, in worn blue velvet uniform with cream frogging, matching hat, boots and painted canvas spats, on wood base with canted corners, height 31 in. (79 cm), (face restored, later card cover across back). - A handsome automaton in working order.
