A 19th century mahogany marine stick barometer inscribed 'Whitehall Newport', with brass gimballed support, thermometer to the body and brass bob base, height 93cm. CONDITION REPORT: Staining to ivory scale, thermometer replaced, brass bob probably replaced, general surface wear, dents and scratches.
A Fine Compensated Aneroid Barometer by R& J Beck, c.1900, English, ebonised brass body with silvered dial and exceptionally fine needle, calibrated in inches of mercury and reading to 1/100th inch by vernier, complete in velvet-lined, brass-bound oak case with removable thermometer calibrated in Farenheit, Centigrade and Réaumur to lid and fitted compartments for knurled wheel that operates the vernier, and detachable suspension ring, dial signed 'R&J Beck Ltd 68 Cornhill, London'. Provenance: Wooley & Wallis 07/11/2006 lot 488, sold as formerly the property of the 8th Duke of Bedford, Woburn Abbey. This was a cataloging error from Woburn Abbey, as it would have been the property of the 11th Duke if bought new. Note: R & J Beck became a limited company in 1894. Condition report: Barometer pressure tested and working, themometer working.
