AN EARLY 18TH CENTURY FRENCH SILVER 'BUTTERFIELD' TYPE POCKET SUNDIAL AND COMPASS. the octagonal plate dial engraved a sundial with four alternating rings of roman and Arabic numerals, the fold out gnomon decorated a seated bird adjustable for latitudes 40-50-60 degrees, signed P. Le Maire, A Paris, the inset glazed compass with blued steel hands, the reverse of the compass engraved with Londres 51-31, la Haye 52-6, Bruxelles 50-51, Lisle 50-40, Calais 50-57, Liege 50-36, Hambourg 53-43, the back plate with 20 further European cities and their relevant latitudes, 7cm x 6cm, contained within a velvet lined green shagreen case . *CR Condition commensurate with age and use.Case out of shape and not fully closing.
Bronze sundial with Roman numerals, inscribed 'I Count The Sunny Hours.', to include time comparisons for Melbourne, Calcutta, Cape Town & Quebec, with a border of scrolling floral decoration, 34.5cm diameter x 20.5cm high Patina and rusting. Loose elements. Loss. Signs of wear consistent with age and use.
The lid opening, the face engraved with astrological signs. Folding engraved string with engraved tables on underside and face. To use the sundial one first needs to set the instrument on a flat surface and rotate it until the needle on the compass is correctly aligned in a north-south direction. When the metal pin is due north then the string is properly aligned towards the north-pole and the sundial will indicate the correct time – but only for the latitude for which it was constructed. 14.5 by 2.2 cm.
AN EARLY VICTORIAN SCOTTISH FIVE DIAL SLATE HORIZONTAL SUNDIAL BY RICARDUS MELVILLE, GLASGOW, DATED 1845 Of rectangular form, variously inscribed, two subsidiary dials for New Zealand and New York, signed RICARDUS MELVILLE FECIT 1845 base 46 by 30 cm, height approx 20cm Richard Melville, a travelling Ulster dial-maker, specialised in multi dial horizontal dials such as this. His work is found signed variously as Richard, Ricardus, Melville and Melvin. A dial from the same year with similar subsidiary locations is held in the collections of the National Museums Scotland. Condition Report: With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling and use. Weathered and with loss to surface making a lot of the inscriptions illegible, loss notable to one corner, one gnomon missing and signs that others may have been repositioned or remounted. The whole looks to have been likely cleaned back but with traces of former moss etc visible. Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. AN EARLY THIRD REICH LUFTWAFFE OFFICERS SWORD, by the maker David Malsch of Steinbach-Thur Germany, the scabbard is leather over metal, and has 2 small rips to the leather, where it had been pulled out from under a bed frame, by an English Serviceman at the end of the War in Germany and brought back to the UK as a Trophy/memento of the conflict, the nickel silver fittings are all correct and fully intact and have a nice consistent patina throughout, the leather on the belt frog is nice and supple. The Sword itself has a blade length of approx 72cm, and is plain & un-attributed, the makers details are clearly visible, together with the Waffenampt Eagle and a partial 5 , the leather buffer is still present on the ricasso, and the Cross guard of the downturned wings is in the Cruciformal type, the Moroccan leather grip is in good condition and both the pommel and cross guard bear the circular Sundial style Swastika, any sign of gilding not present, overall a nice example of this sword from one of the lesser known makers

Sundial is engraved 'CYNTHA & ROBERT' and dated '1977' 104cm (41in.) high Weight; 250lbs (approx) Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist in 1977 Condition Report: In good condition, there are three small losses to the base, but with the weathering and textured look of the base, they blend in. The bronze body in good condition, with pleasant aged patina. Sun dial element is separate and simply placed on. Pilkington & Gibbs Ltd, Preston - An early 20th century brass heliochronometer sundial believed type 5. The angled rotating plate with fixed backsight and pinhole foresight being adjusted via a disc calibrated for date to allow reading for mean time taken from the circumference via a sector divided for minutes against a movable hour scale. The mechanism mounted onto a cast brass bowl fixed via an adjustable pivot for setting latitude onto base. Raised on wooden base.Measures approx. 25cm tall x 24cm in diameter.
