A composite sundial raised on a cast iron base, with pierced design to the circular foot, a pair of fibreglass Campana-form urns, height 73cm, diameter 45cm and a vintage ship's lamp, length approx 110cm (4). CONDITION REPORT The sundial is in fairly good order, just showing signs of weathering to the composite top. The urns have had several coats of paint and there are areas flaking, showing multiple colours throughout and re in a very distressed condition. The lamp is corroded to the finish and sold electrically untested.

An early 19th century brass octagonal sundial, the scrolled gnomon centred on a finely engraved compass rose within a chapter ring with Roman numerals, signed 'James Lynch - 26 Capel Street - Dublin', 10¼" (26cm) wide 6¼" (16cm) high. James Lynch & Son, "Mathematical, Optical, Philosophical Instrument Makers to Trinity College and His Majesty's Ordnance" traded from 26 Capel Street between 1808 and 1825.
AN UNUSUAL MIXED MATERIAL HAKO NETSUKE WITH COMPASSJapan, late 19th centuryPublished: Chappell, Welch (1999) Netsuke: The Japanese Art of Miniature Carving, no. 248.A quite unusual ensemble consisting of many different materials. The case is crafted from marine ivory (most likely sperm whale tooth) and highly polished ebony wood. The top is very finely decorated in gold hiramaki-e with aogai (mother-of-pearl) showing two butterflies, a symbol for marital happiness and well-being relating to the Chinese character for "double-happiness". The interior of the hako netsuke slides out to reveal an old compass, inscribed in gold lacquer with the twelve animals of the zodiac and a sundial.LENGTH 4.5 cmCondition: Very good condition with minor surface wear. The sundial with a loss.Provenance: Ex-collection Richard R. Silverman purchased from Sharen Chappell, St. Paul, in 2013. Richard R. Silverman (1932-2019) was a renowned Asian art collector with one of the largest private collections of netsuke outside of Japan. He lived in Tokyo between 1964 and 1979 and began to collect netsuke there in 1968. Since the 1970s, he wrote and lectured about netsuke and was an Asian art consultant for Christie's, Sotheby's, and Bonhams. His gift of 226 ceramic netsuke to the Toledo Museum of Art constitutes perhaps the largest public collection of these miniature clay sculptures in the world. After moving to California, Silverman became a member of the Far Eastern Art Council at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1984. In 1993, he joined LACMA's Executive Board. He served on the board of directors for the International Society of Appraisers from 1986 to 1994 and served nine years as chair for the City of West Hollywood Fine Arts Commission. Richard Silverman was posthumously awarded the Order of the Rising Sun for his decades-long promotion of Japanese culture.This item contains ivory, rhinoceros horn, tortoise shell, and/or some types of tropical wood and is subject to CITES when exporting outside the EU. One undated Washington success token featuring a bust of George Washington encircled by "GEORGE WASHINGTON" on one side and the reverse with an eye of providence with fifteen rays emanating from the center surrounded by "SUCCESS TO THE UNITED STATES." One Fugio cent, designed by Benjamin Franklin and often referred to as a Franklin cent, featuring a sun and sundial surrounded by "FUGIO 1787 MIND YOUR BUSINESS" on one side and the reverse with 13 chain links surrounding "UNITED STATES WE ARE ONE" in the center. AN IRISH BRASS SUNDIAL19th centuryEngraved 'Wm Pierrie Conligh House' and 'Latitude 54, 40', 30.5 diameter, 23.5 high; together with a sundial chapter ring, engraved 'Jon Massey, Dublin', 32cm diameter; and a brass armillary sphere, engraved with Roman numerals, 26cm high, 35cm diameter. (3)Footnotes:Little Clandeboye or Conlig House, near Bangor, County Down, was built in 1855 in the Neo-Tudor style. Conlig House, however, can be dated originally to circa 1830 and was very similar in style to Glencraig House (now altered) which dates from the same period. The architect may have been William Burn, who was later consulted by Lord Dufferin with regard to the remodelling of Clandeboye House in the 1840s.By 1850, Conlig House was the residence of Captain William Pirrie, the Belfast ship-owner and harbour commissioner. William Pirrie (1st Viscount Pirrie) was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution (Inst) from 1858-62, and then became an apprentice at Harland and Wolff.
