A late 19th century steel cased equinoctial compass sundial by T.W. Watson of London, having inner compass silvered dial marked T.W. WATSON 4 PALL MALL, LONDON, engraved compass points and degrees in quadrants of 0-90, folding gnomon and hinged latitude arc numbered 0-90, three brass adjustable levelling screws, bubble level and cross bubble, 8 x 8cm, in original felt-lined morocco case bearing T.W. Watson insignia and with three fastening hooks, case 9.5 x 9.5cmCondition report: Stands well.Working and appears complete and all original.Some scuffs to dial.Leather box faded but otherwise good.

Post Medieval Pocket Sundial. Circa, 16th-17th century AD. Copper-alloy, 3.87 g, 39.72 mm. A scarce dial from a pocket sun dial dating from AD 1570-1650. The dial has a circular frame, a central scrolled bar with two integral projecting tabs to which are tethered each side of a folding triangular fin (the gnomon). The sundial is inscribed around the edge of the frame with Roman numerals 4-12 (IIII V VI VII VIII IX X XI XII) and 1-8 (I II III IIII V VI VII VIII) which represent the hours of daylight for the northern latitude. These are sub-divided into quarter hours by a calibrated ring that has four divisions each hour. When raised, the gnomon would have cast a shadow to enable the user to tell the time. A STONE-MOUNTED BRASS SUNDIAL, the circular brass dial engraved with a bearded mask to centre beneath the gnomon, and 'Make time, save time. While time lasts. All time is no time. When time is past' in surrounding circular band, the outer edge with hours marked from 4am to 8pm in Roman numerals, and a compass to the top, inset to a circular stone base, raised on a spiralling baluster stone column. 97.1cm high

A SCOTTISH LATE GEORGIAN SUNDIAL BY MILLER & ADIE, EDINBURGH EARLY 19TH CENTURY the bronze dial raised on a squared sandstone baluster column(Dial 38.5cm diameter; pedestal 74cm high, 96cm high overall)Footnote: Note: Alexander Adie was apprenticed to his uncle the eminent Scottish instrument maker John Miller in 1789. In 1804 his uncle took him into partnership trading under the name Miller and Adie. The business continued until Miller's death in 1815. Adie then continued operating under his own name, and later Adie & Son when his son joined the firm. Adie was particularly interested in meteorological instruments and is perhaps best known as the inventor of the Sympiesometer, a compact and lightweight type of barometer, in 1818. In recognition of his work he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1819.
