14th-15th century A.D. A rare rectangular marble shadow clock or sundial with three chamfered edges, scrolls and foliate tendrils framing panels of Kufic script to the sides reading, to the left 'Mohammed is his messenger of God' and to the right 'There is no God but Allah'; also inscribed with the maker's name to the front: Sheikh Abol Hassan Mansor Saif; with a sun dial to the upper face framed by a rope border; copper-alloy spike to the upper face to accept the gnomon. A French silver 'Butterfield Dial' pocket sundial and compassMichael Butterfield, Paris circa 1700, discharge mark small article, signed 'Butterfield, Paris' Elongated octagonal shape, adjustable bird gnomon, engraved with various European cities and their latitude adjustment, scrolling foliate decoration, a compass attached, length 6cm, weight 0.8oz.Footnotes:Michael Butterfield (1635-1724) was a British clockmaker who worked in Paris in the late 17th and early 18th century. He was primarily known for producing sundials for use by Grand Tour travellers, enabling them to determine the time in the towns they visited. He opened a shop selling precision instruments in 1677 in rue Neuve-des-Fosses, in Saint Germain, where his sundial became fashionable. From this location he sold all types of sundials, dominating the market with his small travelling sundial featuring an adjustable bird gnonom and three chapter rings. This type of dial became the height of fashion and became known as the 'Butterfield Dial'. A Meiji period Satsuma bowl with figural decoration of young women, with flowing water and rocks in the foreground, pagodas in the background, cherry blossom sprays and mountains in the background, cobalt blue and gilt-heightened rim, black seal mark to base, diameter 15cm, a Kutani decorative bowl with four panels to the centre, two round and two square with figural painted scenes, with prunus blossom, cherry blossom, mountains, and flowing water in the background within an abstract and gilt-heightened border, gilt-heightened throughout, exterior of the bowl with hand painted figural scenes and abstract panels, within a terracotta and gilt-heightened base, three red character marks to base, diameter 16cm, a Satsuma saucer with figural, water and scenic decoration, sundial in the foreground, black seal mark to the base, and a Satsuma single cup with figural, mountain and cherry blossom decoration to the interior, decorative panels to the outside with figural scenes, to floral shaped base.Qty: 4Condition Report; Satsuma Bowl - doesn't seem to be any major damage or signs of restoration, loss of gilding to the rim and to the decorative rim, interior of the bowl has good colour and no loss of gilding. Late 18th century French portable sundial compass by Duhamel, Paris Late 18th century French portable sundial compass by Duhamel, Paris. The Butterfield-type instrument with a hinged gnomon, featuring a bird pointer. Underside with an engraved table of latitudes for 21 cities, mainly French to include Paris, Brest, Bordeaux, Nantes, Turin, Madrid and others. The instrument is housed in a red velvet lined, black leather case.Instrument is 7.6cm long, 6.5cm wide.Compass is in working order, glass intact, patination to the body (see images). The leather case is worn with one area of loss to the back of the top. Locking mechanism functional, red velvet interior is threadbare in areas with circular impression of the compass dial on the lower half.
A George III bronze sundial, signed 'W & S Jones, Holborn, London' (active1795-1810), the circular plate engraved with a coat of arms and roman numerals, 37.5cm diameter CONDITION REPORT:There is a somewhat worn compass ring within the roman numerals which should allow the sundial to be accurately sited.
