A Portuguese Palissy ware footed bowl, relief decorated with serpent and salamander, diameter 23cm.Additional InformationThere is a crack to the end of the snake's tail, which appears to be a firing crack. There are some chips to the moulded foliage. The snake's tongue probably chipped as it looked as if it should have been longer. Also a chip to the lizard's mouth on the left side. Crazed throughout and further general wear. Chip to one of the 'toes' of the lizard's rear left foot. Quite dirty and dusty.
Manuel Mafra (Portuguese, 1829-1905), a large Palissy style majolica figural group of a monkey riding a tortoise on a naturalistic clipped rectangle base, impressed M Mafra Calda Portugal, 42cm high.. Base 34cm x 25cm2cm chip to front tortoise foot, 4cm chip to base, 7 or more other minor chips to base, 1-2cm chip to rear tortoise foot, rope around tortoise neck has snapped off at the monkey's left hand, 1.5cm loss to glaze on monkey's left ear. A FRENCH POTTERY GROUP OF 'CHRIST AND THE SAMARITAN WOMAN AT THE WELL', PROBABLY AVON (NEAR FONTAINEBLEAU), EARLY 17TH CENTURY of Palissy type, modelled with the seated Christ flanking the well embellished with a winged angel head, the standing Samaritan woman to the other side holding a vessel on its edge 17cm high For a very similar example see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, No.53.225.40, on view in Gallery 532. Provenance: Figures from the Barlow Collection, the collection started by Sir Thomas Dalmahoy Barlow, GBE (1883-1964), banker and industrialist, also known as an art collector and historian; added to by his son Basil Stephen Barlow (1918-1991); thence by family descent.
