dating: about 1580 provenance: North Italy, Helmet with skull in one piece, surmounted with medium-high comb, with twisted border. Sharpened and sloping brim, in one piece with the skull, so as the nape-guard, both with file-roped and twisted border. Decoration of the comb sides with a beautiful weave of armour parts, musical instruments, other items and two characters, all engraved and partially relieved on a grained ground. Edges of the two halves of the skull crossed with frames and braided bands, that outline the two triangles at the two ends, front and back, carved en suite with the comb. A fine cartouche in the center of both sides, with a frame held by Caryatids of winged figures, in which a character is depicted, in armour, holding a sword and a scale (probably an allegory of the Justice). Brim and nape-guard engraved en suite with the comb. Cheek-piece probably replaced in the time of use, with frames at the edges, file-roped borders and ventilation holes with engraved rosettes. Blackened inside. Iron rivets with brass rosettes, carved with petals. Gorget with two front and two back plates. Engraved en suite with the weave of the helmet, neckline with twisted rope. Fine breast-plate, ribbed in the center, thick rope at the neckline and gussets, that are fixed with rivets. Typical decoration of this style, with two medallions with faces looking at each other, is combined with the theme of burgonet, therefore the frames of decorative lists, that cross the plate are with braided bands, so as on the helmet and armour parts are engraved but also slightly relieved, grained ground. A figure armed with a lance above, that recalls a character on the comb. Back-plate decorated with bands as well and with a medallion above. Eight-plated pauldrons, adorned with various decorative elements (parts of armour and other decorations) on a grained ground, and with bands relieved to imitate the twisted ropes. Main right plate with a medallion both on the front wing and on the back, that recalls a warrior depicted on the helmet skull's sides. Interesting left plate, probably one replacement in the time of use, with medallions with curious pagan themes. The front one with a feminine figure. The back one with an effigy of a female druid riding a deer and armed with a sickle. The two rear medallions portraying characters with curious features (while those on the right plate effigy the knights). Brassards with slight decorative differences and adorned in the theme with the rest of the components. Cuffs without fingers, with scaled backs and engraved with rinceaux bands. Twelve-plated tassets, decorated en suite with the other components. Restored leather strings. Mounted on a fine, wooden mannequin with finely carved and painted face. height with base circa 190 cm.
