LUCIE RIE (1902-1995); an early sgraffito porcelain bowl, pitted cream glaze to interior and manganese to rim and exterior and decorated inside and out with radiating lines, impressed LR mark, made in the 1950s, diameter 21.5cm. (D)Provenance: The Norman and Kathleen Makinson Collection. Originally a gift from the artist to a furniture shop owner on Sloane Street, London and then subsequently gifted to the Makinsons. Norman Makinson was a ceramic artist and designer and is probably best known for his 1951 Festival of Britain commemorative mug. Note: There is a bloat to the well which has distorted the foot and is probably why the bowl was gifted by Rie rather than sold. Additional InformationThere is a tiny nick to rim and also a small area of glaze loss to a different part of the rim, otherwise appears good with no further signs of faults, damage or restorations. Lucie Rie - A 1980s footed bowl with golden manganese glaze and rings of turquoise and charcoal black around a terracotta foot and well, impressed LR seal, diameter 18 to 19cm, height 8cm.Provenance: Purchased from Ludlow Antiques Auctions Ltd on 24th October 1995, lot 70. The sale included the contents of Wenlock Abbey and Bedfordshire Manor House and has since remained in a private collection.
