Good English brass original verge hook and spike lantern clock, the 6.75" brass dial signed E. Webb, Bourton enclosing a foliate engraved centre, surmounted by a pierced lion and unicorn front fret engraved with the initials G.I.A. on a central shield, with pierced side foliate frets, five turned finials, strapwork, bell and finial, 15.75" high (lead weight and pendulum) *This lantern clock is illustrated in Time & Place, English Country Clocks 1600-1840, an exhibition by The Antiquarian Horological Society at the Museum of the History of Science, University of Oxford, 25th November 2006-15th April 2007, published by The Antiquarian Horological Society (see pages 96-99). A copy of this book is also included in the lot, complete with the official token of thanks for loaning the clock to the exhibition. This maker is also mentioned in A.J. Moore - The Clockmakers of Somerset, 1650-1900 (see page 284)
A 20th Century lantern clock of earlier style with silvered chapter ring with black Roman numeral hourly markers with inner border with quarterly and half hour markers, having single hand, centre face having engraved scroll design and named William Flint, Charing, body having pierced ornate panels surrounding bell with cup and cover finials, fitted with anchor escapement chain movement, height 37cm.
A 20th Century lacquered brass cased lantern clock in the 17th Century style CONDITION REPORTS There is some kind of mechanism within the bell - please see images for more details. Unknown if in working order. Brass is rubbed in several places, especially to the sides, there is a screw missing to the front right corner finial, and a pin missing from the front left corner number plate. Scuffs and scrapes all over, especially to the feet and lower section. General wear and tear including pitting, discolouration, etc. For movement, see images.
A lantern clock, with Roman numerals, striking on a bell, 48 cm high See illustration Condition report Report by GH Both hands off but present, with some rust but most of the original bluing remains. Movement generally appears to have been unused for a long time and does not appear to have any chains. There is also no pendulum and no weights. Many other pieces also missing. Four pieces of gilt brass moulding for the front are detached but present, and do not appear to have any fittings. They may or may not be original to the clock. Enamel numerals generally pitted and with some loss. Overall generally tarnished and dark in colour. Sold in unworking a.f. condition with many parts missing and some possible alterations.
An 18th century lantern clock with dial inscribed 'Jonathan Lowndes in ye Pall Mall', bearing date '1680', the 6" brass dial with brass 5 1/2" brass chapter ring bearing Arabic and Roman numerals, with applied mask and scroll spandrels, the arch with circular roundel bearing date 1680, inscribed on crescent shaped tablet, the 30 hour weight driven movement striking on a bell, with single lead weight and later wooden bracket, 21cm high x 15.5cm wide.
Searle & Co, London, a late-Victorian 17th century-style brass lantern clock: the eight-day duration, double-fusee movement striking the hours on a bell and the quarters on two bells all set within the brass straps to the top, the backplate engraved with the maker's details Searle & Co, 78 & 79, Lombard St, London, EC, No. 370, the brass lantern case with turned pillars to the corners, matching feet and finials and fretwork to the top, the six-inch brass dial having a raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, the dial centre with engraved floral decoration and having blued steel hands, the inside of the rear door having an engraved presentation inscription to Robert Love, Esq dated May 1904, height 40cm.
George Clarke, White Chappel fecit, a brass lantern clock: the thirty-hour birdcage movement having an anchor escapement and striking the hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the frame with turned pillars to the corners, turned brass finials to the top and ball feet below, the brass dial having a raised chapter ring with engraved Roman numerals, meeting arrow-head half-hour markings, the centre engraved with floral decoration and the maker's name George Clarke, White Chappel, fecit, with a decorative blued-steel single hand, engraved brass frets to the top and surmounted by a brass bell strap under which sits the bell, height 34cm. With a later oak wall bracket. * Biography: George Clarke is recorded as working in White Chappel (Whitechapel), London prior to 1760 as a turret clock maker.
17th century and later lantern clock of traditional form with bell cage above, engraved dolphin crestings, broad circular dial signed Jeffrey Bayley at the turnstile in Holburne, Londini and engraved with tulips with Roman numerals and inner alarm dial, 19th century spring driven movement on turned bun feet, 38cm high. Key present CONDITION REPORT General overall condition good. Movement is quite dirty. Some wear to case, bell possibly cleaned. Dial good, some damage to chapter ring at 6 o'clock. Separate top and bottom plates have been added. Bell straps repaired and finial a replacement. Hands now fixed with wear. Pendulum is missing
