Charles II brass lantern clock, John Ebsworth at ye Cross Keys in Lothbury, Londini (London), circa 1670, the 15.5cm diameter Roman dial with half hour divisions and inner quarter hour track framing engraved tulip decoration and Arabic alarm dial with iron single hand, the posted countwheel bell-striking movement with verge and crownwheel escapement, internal pendulum and standard London third period frame with column turned corner posts beneath dolphin-pierced frets, urn finials and strap work mounted bell, the sides with hinged brass doors, 38cm high, together with a later oak bracket Literature - Loomes, Brian, Lantern Clocks & Their Makers records John Ebsworth as apprenticed in 1657 to Richard Ames and free in 1665. his progression through the court of the Clockmakers Company saw him become Assistant in 1682, Warden in 1694 and Master 1697. he died in 1699. Together with scroll moulded wall bracket, large lead weight and brass cased bob pendulum. (B.P. 24% incl. VAT) CONDITION REPORT: The clock appears to be complete and appears to have been recently restored or generally re-polished.
Interesting early English verge lantern clock made for the Turkish market, the 8" brass arched dial signed Wm. Dent, London, 2607 on a silvered disc to the arch, over a silvered chapter ring enclosing a matted centre, with stylised foliate engraved side doors, surmounted by pierced engraved foliate frets, strapwork and bell, 13.5" high; also within a long case made for the Turkish market, with long arched door and painted overall with stylised flowers and foliage upon a gilded ground, surmounted by a rounded arched hood, 88" high overall (weight, no pendulum) *Provenance: this clock was purchased from a large country house sale in Ireland (lot 1069) in June 1976, this was a three day house sale and the contents were sold on behalf of the executors of Capt. W.E.D. Allen OBE deceased, being the contents of Whitechurch House, Cappagh, Co Waterford Captain Allen was from the family who did the large roadside advertising posters throughout the UK and Ireland. He was himself an author and known collector. His library was particularly important, some pieces at the sale made record prices at the time. He had aristocratic connection through his marriage. Good early brass hook and spike balance wheel lantern clock, the 6.25" silvered chapter ring enclosing a foliate engraved centre signed Richard Ames Neare St Andrews Church in Holburne fecit, also with central foliate engraved alarm dial and single iron hand, surmounted by pierced foliate dolphin frets, strapwork bell and finial (six weights) *The maker Ames or Aymes is recorded as working between 1648 and 1681
A George III brass lantern clock made for the Middle Eastern market, Robert Ward, London, last quarter of the 18th century The two-handed posted countwheel bell striking movement with verge escapement regulated by short bob pendulum, the 8 inch brass break-arch dial with pierced steel hands and matted centre within applied 'Turkish' numeral chapter ring with conforming five minutes to outer track, the angles applied with silvered crescent-centred foliate scroll cast spandrels beneath arch with a circular boss signed Rob’t Ward, London flanked by conforming mounts, the frame with column turned corner uprights and brass side doors beneath vase finials flanking foliate scroll pierced side frets and supporting domed bell bearer above, the rear with brass backplate, hanging hoop and spurs, on ball feet, 36cm (14.25ins) high. Robert Ward is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as apprenticed in 1768, gaining his freedom of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1779 and working from Abchurch Lane, London until 1808. He is noted as specialising in supplying musical clocks for the Middle Eastern market.
A 17th century style striking lantern clock, 20th century, front and side pierced frets, 6-3/4-inch silvered Roman chapter ring, engraved floral dial plate, verge movement with countwheel striking on a top mounted bell, bob pendulum, 41.5cm high 14.12.18, Side doors and back panel are missing, metal surfaces are discoloured, movement needs cleaning, weights are missing.
