A SERVICE OF CARRS SILVER PLATED FLATWARE FOR TWELVE Old English pattern, housed in a black lacquer finish three tier canteen, Comprising: 12 table forks; 12 table knives; 12 steak knives; 12 dessert spoons; 12 dessert forks; 12 dessert knives; 12 soup spoons; 12 sauce spoons; 12 tea spoons; 12 coffee spoons; 12 pastry forks; 12 ice cream spoons; 4 table/serving spoons; 2 butter knives; 1 soup ladle; 1 sauce ladle; 1 cheese knife; 1 cake server; a carving knife, fork and steel The canteen 49cm wide Condition: A large portion of the set appears to have been unused, while some pieces appear to have seen 'light' use. Of all the pieces I have inspected, there are none where the silver has worn through, all knife blades are fully intact within handles. All in all, very good condition. The canteen itself appears in good condition with no chips in the lacquer, only a very minor dent to the back right corner. This is an auction of preowned and antique items. Many items are of an age or nature which precludes their being in perfect condition and you should expect general wear and tear commensurate with age and use. The cushion-shaped old-cut stone approx. 0.79cts, in an eight-claw setting on a shallow-facetted D-section band with split knife shoulders with chenirs, indistinctly stamped 'PLAT', size P, 2.7g gross Condition Report: Overall good condition for age, general wear and tear commensurate with age and use over a long period of time, evidence of a rather clumsy size up at some stage in the distant past The diamond measures approx. 5.85 x 5.9 x 3.5mm (approx. 6.2 across the rounded-corners), large culet and there are several noticable windows, colour about J, clarity about SI1/2 a black inclusion to the junction of one of the kite/upper-girdle/crown facets and a small gletz in close proximity.

Um 1894 beginnt Zügel, das 'Malerparadies' um das kleine am Altrhein gelegene Fischerdorf Wörth in der Nähe von Karlsruhe für sich zu entdecken, wo er in seiner mehr als 20-jährigen Lehrtätigkeit an der Karlsruher und Münchner Kunstakademie mit seinen Studenten, der sogenannten Zügelschule, in den Sommermonaten zahlreiche impressionistisch gemalte Landschaften und Tierbilder schafft. Nach 1900 hat sich Zügel vollends der Plein-air-Malerei zugewandt, woraufhin seine Werke zusehends an Schwung und Dynamik gewinnen. Dabei weicht Zügel von der noch zu Beginn seines Schaffens realistisch-beschreibenden Malweise ab und zeigt eine erstaunliche malerische Freiheit, die sich in den breiten, mit Pinsel und Malmesser aufgetragenen pastosen Farbstrichen, aufgelockert durch große und kleinere Tupfen, ausdrückt. Sein eigentliches Interesse als bedeutender Vertreter der Tiermalerei gilt weniger einer präzisen Wiedergabe der Tieranatomie und der Formen als vielmehr dem bewegten und lebendigen Licht in der Natur, das so das Bildgeschehen bestimmt. Around 1894, Zügel began to discover the 'painter's paradise' around the small fishing village of Wörth on the Old Rhine near Karlsruhe, where he created numerous Impressionist landscapes and animal paintings with his students, the so-called Zügel School, during the summer months of his more than 20-year teaching career at the Karlsruhe and Munich art academies. After 1900, Zügel turned his full attention to plein-air painting, whereupon his works visibly gained momentum and dynamism. Zügel departed from the realistically descriptive painting style he had used at the beginning of his career and showed an astonishing painterly freedom, which was expressed in the broad, impasto strokes of paint applied with brush and pallet knife, broken up by large and small dabs. As an important animal painter, his real interest was less in the precise reproduction of animal anatomy and forms than in the moving and lively light in nature, which thus determines the pictorial events. Zügel's late works show an artist who remained true to an immediacy based on impressionistic looseness, which lives entirely from the powerful colors, right up to his last creative phase. Das Werk Edward Cucuels ist ab den 1910er Jahren geprägt durch eine heitere, unbeschwerte Freiluftmalerei, die er zunächst mit seinem Freund und Lehrmeister Leo Putz in Hartmannsberg am Chiemsee betreibt. Hier arbeiten die Maler über vier Jahre hinweg jeden Sommer Seite an Seite. Zuvor ist er hauptsächlich als Grafiker und Illustrator für die Presse tätig, unter anderem in den 1890er Jahren in New York, nachdem er in seiner Geburtsstadt San Francisco an der Kunstakademie und in Paris an der fortschrittlichen Académie Julian studiert hat. Den besonderen Reiz von Edward Cucuels Gemälden macht ihre spürbare Leichtigkeit und nonchalante Eleganz aus. Die Inszenierung der Modelle lässt die Grenze zwischen Pose und unbeobachteter Spontaneität verschwimmen, in der lockeren Ausführung erscheint die Malerei als angenehmer sommerlicher Zeitvertreib. Häufig verwendet er dabei nicht nur den Pinsel, sondern trägt die Farbe in breiten Strichen mit dem Malmesser auf, wodurch seine Motive trotz der hellen, pastelligen Farben eine solide Körperlichkeit erlangen. Insbesondere die Welt der schönen, unbeschwerten jungen Frau in sommerlicher Landschaft ist eines der erfolgreichsten Motive von Edward Cucuel. Seine Bilder vom Ufer des Starnberger Sees und dem zur Villa gehörenden Park sowie der kleinen, lichterfüllten Wäldchen im Umland sind Ausdruck einer Lebenshaltung, die gleichzeitig charakteristisch für eine bestimmte Gesellschaftsschicht ist, der der Maler in seiner vom Spätimpressionismus beeinflussten Malweise auf exemplarische Weise huldigt. From the 1910s onward, Edward Cucuel's work was characterized by cheerful, carefree open-air painting, which he initially pursued with his friend and teacher Leo Putz in Hartmannsberg am Chiemsee, where the painters worked side by side every summer for four years. Prior to this, he worked mainly as a graphic artist and illustrator for the press, such as in New York in the 1890s, after studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in his native city of San Francisco and at the progressive Académie Julian in Paris. From 1914, Cucuel lived on Lake Ammersee and then on Lake Starnberg south of Munich, where he owned a villa with an extensive lakeside garden. He continued the motif he had previously chosen: young, elegantly dressed ladies, casually draped and enjoying their leisure time in the countryside. Becoming more independent in style from Putz, Cucuel captured his pictures with an unbroken fluid to fleeting brushstroke in rich colors of high luminosity. The special appeal of Edward Cucuel's paintings lies in their palpable lightness and nonchalant elegance. The staging of the models blurs the boundary between pose and unobserved spontaneity; in the relaxed execution, painting appears to be a pleasant summer pastime. He often not only uses a brush, but also applies the paint in broad strokes with a painting knife, giving his motifs a solid physicality despite the bright, pastel colors. In particular, the world of the beautiful, carefree young woman in a summer landscape is one of Edward Cucuel's most successful motifs. His pictures of the shores of Lake Starnberg and the park belonging to the villa, as well as the small, light-filled woods in the surrounding countryside, are an expression of an attitude to life that is also characteristic of a certain social class, to which the painter paid homage in his late Impressionist-influenced style of painting. Iridescent reflections of light on the white clothing of the ladies, here against the intense green of the branches and the ground illuminated by individual patches of sunlight, give the scene that enraptured magic that is so characteristic of many of Cucuel's works from this period.
