Braemar - a rare Scottish provincial kilt pin / brooch William Robb, marked SILVER, W.R, B.M.R, with claw set citrine terminal with knot work decorated split pin below 8cm long Notes: For many years, the shop William Robb had in Braemar was mainly an outlet for items made in Ballater and the necessity for a Braemar town punch seems to have been considered unimportant. Items bearing this mark are much rarer than previously considered and to date we have only noted three examples (including those offered here) with the combination of WR and BMR - all are on kilt pins of varying sizes.
Ballater - a a Scottish provincial silver kilt pin William Robb of Ballater, marked ROBB / BALLATER, the central disk with engraved borders and with central collet set citrine, applied to simple traditional pin with coiled terminal 10cm long, central disk 3cm diameter Notes: The design of this kilt pin combines two successful standard details by Robb; the simple traditional kilt pin (as supplied to the Balmoral Highlanders), and the simple target brooch with citrine set to the centre.
Ballater - a Scottish provincial gold kilt pin / brooch William Robb, marked WR, BLTR, 9ct, Edinburgh 1923, with claw set citrine terminal above an intertwined knotwork section to a tapered point 8.5cm long Notes: Whilst it is known Robb worked in gold, little officially or un-officially marked wares are known. This is because within the area his reputation was such that the added seurity of a hallmark and the expense that this entailed was not considered necessary.
Ballater - a large Scottish provincial kilt pin / brooch J Knowles & Sons, marked JK&S, BLTR, SILVER, of typical form with claw set citrine terminal with intertwined spit pin 13.5cm long Note: J Knowles & Son were another firm which capitalised on the tourist boom in Ballater. They had originally been clock makers based in Aboyne but diversified into tourist wares around 1900. Like many, they were retailers rather than makers so items bearing their marks are rare.
