2400-2200 BC. A carved standing figure of a worshipper, hands clasped to the chest and beard resting on them, tufted kaunakes kilt, bare feet on a discoid base. Statues such as this were placed in temples before the image of the deity in order to pray perpetually on behalf of the person it represented, who was considered to be physically present in the statue. 387 grams, 16cm (6 1/4"). Ex Delorme and Collin De Bocage, Paris, 5 December 2009, Lot 5 (with a copy of the catalogue extract); formerly in a French private collection, and previously in a London private collection. [No reserve] "Fair condition; surface eroded, hair partly absent."
2300-2200 BC. A carved black agate seal with figure and animals; accompanied by a museum-quality impression and a copy of an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: Cylinder Seal of Black Stone. 26 x 16.5mm. A contest scene of five participants is shown, all on their hind legs. In the centre are two lions with bodies crossing, each attacking a horned animal, but with different horns. On the left a hero in short kilt and flat cap is succouring the one horned animal. A bush or branch serves as a terminal. This is an Akkadian seal, c. 2300-2200 B.C. It is nicely cut in the best tradition of the period, and is in very good condition. This lot is part of a single collection of cylinder seals which were examined in the 1980s by Professor Lambert and most are accompanied by his own detailed notes; the collection has recently been reviewed by Dr. Ronald Bonewitz 13 grams, 27mm (1"). L Silbertston & Sons Ltd 1953. Brass buttons and Sergeants stripes, with collar piping and cuffs etc. The Kilt has various WD markings and label affixed reads No 2 Seaforths & HLI OR (except 6th Battalion). ". An undated archaistic gilt-bronze figure of a standing male modelled in the half-round in 2800-550 BC style, wearing a gilded kilt and tall cap, convex to the reverse. 3.48 grams, 76 mm (3"). Figures such as this are believed to be representations of the god Baal, a Semitic deity that enjoyed widespread worship across the ancient Near East from prehistory until the end of the Roman period. The name Baal means Lord and he is associated with storms and the life giving rains and was said to live on mountains. During the Roman period his most famous temple was at Baalbek in Syria where he was worshipped as Jupiter Heliopolitanus. Property of a European gentleman living in London; acquired in the UK before 1980. " Fine condition.
