Signed and inscribed Christmas greetings card by both Prince Charles and Princess Diana individually, the stiff white folding 8vo card featuring a colour photograph to the inside of Prince Charles standing outdoors in a full length pose wearing a kilt alongside Princess Diana who is seated on a swing with the young Prince William in her arms. Signed and inscribed ('Mr. Frost -....from Charles and') by the Prince above and below a printed greeting and signed ('Diana') by the Princess. The ink is faded although perfectly legible. With two gold embossed crests to the front cover. About VG

Royal Christmas Card for 1950, gilt embossed crown on front cover Royal Christmas Card for 1950, gilt embossed crown on front cover, with printed greetings "With Best Wishes for Christmas and the New Year 1950 (year written in pen), signed "George R." and "Elizabeth R." in black fountain pen ink, imprint: Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd, 4 pp, oblong. Opposite the signed page is a mounted, black and white, landscape photograph of George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margareth in Scotland, all dressed in the traditional kilt. Overall size 13.6 x 35.6cm when opened, 4pp, oblong. Some browning to paper, wear to margins. Uneveness of tone to signed page possibly due to previous framing. Signatures remain clear and crisp.

Western Asiatic Sumerian Gypsum Statue of a Male Worshipper Second Archaic Dynasty, mid-3rd millennium BC. A carved figure standing barefoot on a T-shaped base with hands clasped to his chest in an attitude of devotion, with naked upper torso and wearing a tufted wool kaunakes skirt in three tiers. 3.0 kg, 22cm (8 1/2"). Ex Hotel Drouot, Paris, 13-14 February 2002, Lot 400; previously with Christie's, 13 December 1995, Lot 140; formerly in an important North London collection formed before 1980. The kaunakes was a woollen kilt or shawl woven in a tufted pattern perhaps indicating overlapping petals or feathers. The effect may have been achieved by sewing tufts onto the finished garment or by weaving loops into the fabric before tailoring. It appears to have originated in Sumeria circa 2500 BC. It can be found on imagery uncovered in excavations of Bactrian sites, especially the female statuettes called Bactrian Princesses. Fine condition; head absent. Accompanied by an Art Loss Register certificate.
Western Asiatic Akkadian Black Jasper Cylinder Seal with Sun-god Shamash and Worship Scene 2300-2200 BC. A carved black jasper seal with image of sun-god and attendants; supplied with a cast; accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: ’Cylinder seal of black stone, 31 x 18 mm. In the centre of design is the sun-god Shamash. He is stepping up from the mountain of the east at dawn, wearing horns on his head and a short kilt. Rays arise from his shoulders and he holds up his saw-weapon, while gripping a club in the other hand. In front and behind is a door held open by an attendant god. To the far right is a standing worshipper in long robe holding up one hand. This is an Akkadian seal, c. 2300-2200 B.C. It is worn and there are a few small spots of damage, but the design is still clear to see. Ancient texts allude to the rising of Shamash from the gates of the east in the morning.' 18 grams, 31mm (1 1/4"). Property of a North London collector; acquired in the 1970s. This lot is part of a single collection of cylinder seals which were examined by the late Professor Lambert in the 1980s and many are accompanied by Professor Lambert’s own detailed notes; the collection has recently been reviewed by Dr. Ronald Bonewitz. It is accompanied by a museum-quality impression of the seal’s design. Fine condition, worn.
Western Asiatic Babylonian Lapis Lazuli Cylinder Seal with Presentation Scene 1900-1700 BC. A carved lapis lazuli seal with frieze of deities and attendants; supplied with a cast; accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Cylinder seal of lapis lazuli, 17.5 x 9 mm, A presentation scene is shown. On the right a god sits on a padded stool. He is wearing a hat with deep brim and long fringed robe. In one hand he is holding a small cup. Facing him is a standing worshipper, with bare head and similar long fringed robe. Standing behind him is a Lamma goddess, in horned tiara and long flounced robe, raising both hands. There is a crescent in the sky and a small standing man in short kilt behind the god, raising one hand. There are four fillers: three dots, 'vessel', 'ball-staff' and a dancing man with splayed legs. This is an Old Babylonian seal, c. 1900-1700 B.C. It is in a rare stone for the period, and is nicely engraved. The surface is a little worn, but the design remains clear.' 2.84 grams, 18mm (3/4"). From an important North London collection formed before 1980. This lot is part of a single collection of cylinder seals which were examined by the late Professor Lambert in the 1980s and many are accompanied by Professor Lambert’s own detailed notes; the collection has recently been reviewed by Dr. Ronald Bonewitz. It is accompanied by a museum-quality impression of the seal’s design. Fine condition.

India, 19th-early 20th century AD. Cast bronze tribal figure of a deity standing on a drum shaped base and wearing a kilt with flaring front piece; the deity wears anklets, armlets and bracelets along with rows of necklaces and amulets; on his head is a turban; in his left hand he holds a catapult and in his right hand round objects, possibly stones, for weapons. 3.2 kg, 44cm (17 1/4"). From an old London collection, formed in the 1980s. A tribal statue of a rural god whose function would seem to be that of a protector of the community. Made in the Bastar region region of central India. Fine condition.

Osbourne of the Gordon Highlanders; comprising William Osborne's regimental walking cane, kilt and sporran (named), regimental wooden plaque, brass shoulder titles and a white metal badge, a black cloth backed regimental badge, an Imperial Service badge, a Birmingham silver cigarette case with engraved initials W.O, an EPNS lighter by Dunhill, patent number 390107, an amethyst set fob seal with engraved inscription, and a trio of WW1 medals, also items relating to Trooper Percy Osborne of the City of London Yeomanry (Roughriders), (killed in action aged 23), comprising a newspaper clipping detailing his death and a further newspaper article showing the memorial, his Lifeguards badges, postcards from Percy, photographs of both brothers, two Queen Mary Christmas 1914 tins (empty of contents) together with a WW1 brass and white metal German belt buckle, marked with the motto 'Got Mit Uns' (a quantity)

A hollow-cast figurine of a standing warrior with studded helmet, kilt and neckrings; 8-shaped shield in the left hand with s-scroll motif, spear in the right hand with forked ferrule uppermost. 1.3 kg, 22cm (8 1/2"). Ex Walter Steinberg collection; acquired London art market, 1960s-1970s. Walter Steinberg has been a well-known figure at fairs, sales and events for many years. Born in 1922 in Philadelphia, Walter has had a life-long passion for collecting. A long-time resident in London, he has now retired to New York and decided that the time has come to pass on the antiquities and coins he has collected over his lifetime. Walter acquired coins and artefacts that interested him, so his collection, although containing many lovely examples, also contains many affordable specimens. Much of the material has been unavailable to the market for 30 to 50 years. Walter hopes that the items he collected will now find new homes with the next generation of collectors.
