Small selection of A.Ls.S., Robt Scott Moncrieff, 12 pages (total), one partially cross-written, 8vo, Little Dunham, Forgandenny, January 1811 - October 1812, to Colin Scott Moncrieff, Robin Scott Moncrieff. The young Moncrieff corresponds on various issues, including his early attempts at painting, in part, 'My return home will give me more pleasure than it will you… It restores to you only a brother, but to me parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, cousins, country, every thing in short that is dear to me… I have been trying yesterday and today to draw a view of the house… but when it came to the painting part, I went all wrong especially in doing trees - If you could give me some instructions in your next letter about painting, I would be very much obliged to you… just tell me what colour I should lay down first… Brereton has lent me his paint box which contains a cake of most wretched Indian ink, some small pieces of Prussian Blue, Lake, Gamboge, and two or three more…' Little Dunham, January 19th 1811), 'As you wished me to send you a plan of this house, I have drawn one on the opposite page, which I will proceed to explain… and on the other side of the of the door is a small long book case - These I have done with pencil, that you may rub them out when you please - Above the fireplace in our room are hung three sketches, and a painting of mine. It represents a Highlander in his bonnet, kilt, plaid etc…', Little Dunham, February 7th 1811), 'The more I examine myself the more of selfishness do I detect in my composition, it actuates me in every undertaking… What a sublime sentiment to come out of my crack'd skull, tis really wonderful - But to tell you the truth, I was a little afraid to write to you when I thought upon the terrible scold I got for my two last epistles…', Forgandenny, October 12th 1812). Some minor tears, evidently caused by the opening of the wax seals, light stains, dust toning and age wear. G, 3
