A VICTORIAN PLAYING CARD BOX, the pull off cover printed with a rural scene of a boy wearing a kilt, with dogs and pony, width 16.5cm, containing two complete sets of playing cards by Joseph Hunt & Sons and Woolley & Co of London, together with a miniature tartanware rolling pin, length 17.5cm, a Mauchline Ware circular box, diameter 4.7cm, a late Georgian rectangular mahogany tea caddy with two compartments, width 18cm and a decorative square inlaid work box, 21cm square (5) (condition: tea caddy clasp not fitting into the lock, one finial chipped, faded top, the inlaid box lacking one back foot, doesn't close completely flush)
7th-mid 6th century BC. A carved carnelian Neo-Babylonian cylinder seal with worshipping scene; a male worshipper in a globular head-dress, wearing a long, vertically-striated and fringed robe, stands facing right, pointing with his raised left hand and extending the right, palm up, towards two deities who face him; the front god, also in a globular head-dress, wearing a vertically-striated, open robe over a kilt, both fringed, raises his left hand, palm up; in the right extended he holds a double-topped mace with two balls on each end; from his back protrude three rays, each ending in a globe; between worshipper and god are above the Pleiades (but one globe absent) and below the tasselled spade (MAR / marru), the symbol of Marduk, the chief god of Babylon; right behind the god a second with a high globular head-dress seats on a throne with a high back, ending up in a ball, wearing a long fringed robe he raises his left hand, palm up, and holds in his right extended a ring of seven drill-holes; above between the both deities is a crescent; a vertical row of four stars serves as a scene separator; thus on this seal the three deities Marduk, Venus-Star and the Pleiades are worshipped; line borders at top and bottom; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. 1st century BC-1st century AD. A bronze lamp or vessel lid with figure of Faunus (Pan) advancing, wearing a sheepskin kilt secured at the waist and with a short tail, holding a shepherd's crook in the left hand and playing the syrinx held to the mouth in the right hand; basal ring to the underside of the base, pierced hinge lug. [A video of this item is available to view on TimeLine Auctions website.] Cf. Rolland, H. Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 142 for type. 215 grams, 10.5cm (4"). From an important London collection; previously in the Nasser collection, kept in the UK since 1993. Fine condition.
26th Dynasty, 664-525 BC. A silver statuette of the seated scribe Imhotep, holding an open papyrus on his knees above his pleated kilt, wearing a Broad Collar and with shaven head, resting feet on a square base and attachment spike to the underside of the body. 207 grams, 10cm (4"). Property of a London lady, part of her family's Swiss collection; formerly acquired in the 1980s. Imhotep was an Egyptian architect, priest, scribe and public official, who was active under Pharaoh Zoser of the Third Dynasty, who built the Step Pyramid at Saqqara. He was one of the two non-royal figures who became deified after death and continued to be worshipped for at least three centuries down to the 26th Dynasty. The other was Amenhotep, son of Hapu, an Egyptian architect, priest, scribe and public official, who was active under Pharaoh Amenhotep III of the 18th Dynasty. [No Reserve] Very fine condition.
4th-5th century AD. A sheet silver bowl with broad base, carinated profile, rolled rim; Greek repoussé scene depicting a large nude Herakles banqueting, reclining on an animal skin holding his emblematic club in the crook of his left arm and a drinking bowl in his raised right hand, attended by two smaller youths each wearing a kilt, filling the bowl from a wineskin; egg-and-dart border to the scene; the rim with pointillé legend in mixed Greek and Roman pseudo-inscription 'PO?I?TENEA? {?} EPE NEAT I?TER.NA?KOAPA IEAGOMEAH ?RE?YHTAMINE'; probably Eastern Mediterranean workmanship. 126 grams, 16.5cm (6 1/2"). Property of a Suffolk collector; formerly acquired on the European art market in the 1990s. Fine condition.
