* Summers (Robert, after). The Doings of Drink, or the Publican versus the People, after the original oil by Mr. Robert Summers of Darlington. Dedicated to Sir Wilfred Lawson Bart, M.P. and to all the Friends of Temperance, Grumby & Clarke, Hull, 1894, chromolithograph, slight damp staining and spotting, trimmed to the image on three margins, 465 x 735 mm, framedQty: (1)NOTESA naive propaganda piece showing the evils of drink on the general populace. The foreground is full of men and women in rags; the implication being that they have been made destitute by drink. People beg, fight, are arrested, beat their wives, drop their babies in the gutter, hang themselves in cellars and pawn their belongings. The sprawling imagery is very much in the style of William Hogarth's 'Gin Lane' and equally lacking in nuance or subtlety in its depiction of the 'demon drink'.
An early 20th Century plated metal-mounted oak tantalus, fitted three cut glass decanters with silver labels, inscribed 'Gin', 'Brandy' and 'Whisky', the two front flaps opening to reveal associated glasses, with underlying drawer flanked by carrying handles, stamped 'D & A EPNS', 39 x 28 x 33cms.
