YOSHIMITSU NISHIMURA (DATES UNKNOWN)A Silver Koro (Incense Burner) and Cover in the Form of a Sacred Stag Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, early 20th century Naturalistically modelled recumbent with all its legs folded beneath its body save one foreleg outstretched, its head slightly raised bearing an alert expression, its body draped with a simulated cover carved in low relief with bats among clouds, and inset with a removeable reticulated cover surmounted with a finial in the form of three tied makimono (handscrolls) and a stalk of reishi fungus, the antlers affixed and carefully worked to imitate the texture of horn; signed on the base with chiselled characters Yoshimitsu saku with an impressed seal gin (silver). 15.7cm x 25.5cm (6 1/8in x 10in). An unusual Doulton stoneware A. Loffet & Co. Scotch whisky flagon and a Doulton stoneware gin flagonThe gin flagon has a repair to the handle at the base and slight roughness to the base commensurate with age and use. The whisky flagon had cracking to the cork stopper near the handle. Slight fading tot he painted decoration and chipping to the base of the handle - please see images.

'He was the first to realise that carbon dioxide was applied to plants by the air and formed a vital part of the plant's food supply... he was also a pioneer of public health. He supported the temperance movement and was responsible for the introduction of the 'gin laws'. He was inventor of artificial ventilation... [and] developed methods of measuring unfathomable depths, for distilling freshwater from the sea, and for the preservation of meat and water on voyages' (PMM 189).

A set of six early 20th century Crown Staffordshire decanter labels, each of shaped lozenge form, decorated with floral garlands and gilt borders, one each for Port, Brandy, Whisky, Claret, Sherry and Gin (at fault), each measuring 54mm x 45mm (6) CONDITION REPORT:The Whisky, Claret, Brandy, Port and Sherry labels show minor fine surface scratching, minor rubbing to the gilt highlights, some tarnishing to the chains, and some staining to the unglazed backs. The Gin label shows extensive glued repairs and a broken chain.
Two balustroid wine glasses, c.1740-60, one with a rounded funnel bowl above an inverted baluster stem with basal knop, the other with a ribbed bowl above a balustroid stem with two knops, and a soda gin glass with bell bowl over a knopped balustroid stem, all over folded feet, 14.5cm max. (3)
A cordial glass, mid 18th century, the small bucket bowl raised on a plain stem with shoulder and basal knops over a folded conical foot, and a gin glass with narrow bell bowl over a balustroid stem and folded foot, 15.7cm. Provenance: acquired from Coritani, Northants, 14th February 1999 (cordial) and 12th February 2000 (gin).
