FRAMED DISPLAY: Pictorial framed display containing 3 permits, 2 x West Cumberland Fishery District 1924 and 1928, a Manors of Eskdale Mitredale and Wasdalehead 1928 salmon permit, a business card relating to Edwin O. Grayson Fishing Tackle Manufacturer Whitehaven, various flies, casts and packets, frame 21"x21".
The following 10 lots from perhaps the best collection of important early, mainly London & other maker`s, rods to have come to the market. ROD: Ex rare Ustonson Makers to His Majesty Temple Bar London, 4 piece valise travel rod, sections approx 27" long, the butt with swollen handle, pinned front brass collar, hand made reel rings over recessed reel seat, fully engraved butt cap, brass ferrules, top 3 sections black washed, the rod lacks rings but due to its rarity and importance is worthy of refurbishment. Onesimus Ustonson c1760-1855 is the first fully researched London maker with Royal warrant, few of his reels are ever seen and even fewer rods have came to the market, to our knowledge this is the only Ustonson valise rod in existence outside the example held in Kew Palace forming part of the King George 1V fishing tackle outfit. REEL, CASE & Photographs etc: A fine and rare Hardy Zane Grey 7" big game reel, one of only 45 built by Hardy Bros 1928-1939. Monel bright finish alloy, counter balanced handle over star drag clutch stamped Patent Applied for, (pre 1939) 2 Royal Appointment crests impressed to face plate, twin Squirt Oil screws adjacent to handle hub, original leather thumb brake, twin harness lugs to top double pillar assembly, correct one piece foot blade with central hole on H frame to side plates, back plate on/off lever, two stamps; "Made by Hardy Bros, Alnwick England" and "The Hardy Zane Grey 7" To Hold 1000 yards 39 Thread". Complete with correct Hardy nickel plated oil bottle, makers details stamped to base, fine condition fitted Hardy Zane Grey block leather case with original ivorine makers plaque to under side of lid, original cross fastening straps with brass buckles, fine condition. A pair of twisted wire Tunny traces with hand forged hooks and swivels, Plus three original black and white photographs showing the tackle shop window display of Pritchard`s of Scarborough during the Tunny festival with 2 Mitchell-Henry reels mounted on rods, a photo of three huge Tunny of 536,707 and 785 lbs, pencil dated to rear Feb 3rd? A photograph on board showing a 526lb Tunny, signed A Tansy 4th Sept 1947 plus another indistinct signature to lower right corner. A copy of this photograph appears on page 94 in Marks Ross`s excellent book The Glory Days of the Giant Scarborough Tunny, 2010 and a number of facsimile hand written letters to Pritchard from Col Peel Edgerton of Tatton and TOM Sopwith discussing Tunny fishing in general.

A carved and painted model of a Salmon mounted on a board, accompanied by original board bearing Rowland Ward label, the carving is believed to be executed by John Tully at the Russell Studio Speyside Fochabers and painted by Isobelle Tully RHA. After hanging in Hattons of Hereford tackle shop for almost 50 years, it was re-mounted by Roger Brooks and inscribed with details attained from the Whitney Estate Fishing Records. It states, `Springer caught by A.K.Wilson, Boat Meadow, Old Court, Whitney on Wye, 11th March 1923. Cock Fish. Weight 43lbs. Length 47". Girth 24". River level 2`2". Taken on 2 1/2in black and gold Minnow.`
