Property of a London businessman, from his grandfather's collection formed after World War II; thence by descent 1972. [7, No Reserve] Fine condition.

A mixed group of decorated bone awls comprising: one tooth-shaped with transverse groove; one flat with square butt; one round-section with transverse grooves; one flat with chisel end; one with fine carving decoration, possibly depicting an animal. 16 grams total, 45-63mm (1 3/4 - 2 1/2"). Property of a gentleman; from an official excavation in Ivamovo Oblast, Russia. The Volosovo culture has its roots in the local Neolithic (Comb Ware) groups of the Volga-Kama region. What is today described as Volosovo culture seems to have emerged during the 4th millennium BC, although its initial, or 'proto', stage is identified already somewhat earlier, and continued until the late 3rd millennium BC. Neolithic, 5th-3rd millennium BC. Group comprising: a knapped and polished axe with squared sides and butt, tapering to a convex cutting edge, in a pale, fine grained stone, with ochre patination; with a slender chisel with oval section and almost square cutting edge, in similar material; both with slight evidence of use wear to edges. 165 grams total, 10.5-14cm (4 1/4 - 5 1/2"). Property of an Essex gentleman. [2] Very fine condition. Scarce; the fabric unusual.
2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of bronze implements comprising: a sturdy chisel with flared blade and split socket; a gouge with facetted tubular body, collared mouth, scooped blade; a narrow chisel with facetted tubular body, flared blade. 187 grams total, 68-78mm (2 3/4 - 3"). Property of a professional; acquired on the European art market in the 1980s. The gouge has a small casting flaw to the upper face. The edge has never been sharpened, perhaps because the smith intended to recycle the bronze into a new tool. [3] Fine condition; the gouge with small casting flaw.

1st millennium AD. A hand-carved amphibolite situla with flat bottom, slightly waisted sidewall, ridged rim; the bottom dressed with a five-prong stonemason's chisel. The form of the vessel is similar to a number of bronze vessels of 5th and 6th century date, possibly of Byzantine origin, found in princely graves such as that found at in grave 1763 at Krefeld-Gellep, Germany. 2.7 kg, 26.5cm (10 1/2"). Ex Lincolnshire, UK, collection; acquired London 1990s. [No Reserve] Fine condition; repair at rim.

A late 17th Century oak six plank coffer The hinged lid above chisel and guilloche carved front panel, flanked by lozenge carved side panels, raised on shaped end supports, width approx 125cm. CONDITION REPORT: One piece top original blacksmith hinges, front hanging lock clasp missing lock plate missing, left hand upright toward the V shape support, original knot hole piece of timber missing approx 6cms x2cms, opposite V shape support extensively scratched, traces of old worm at the bottom not alive, original board base, discolouration and staining to the top.
