A gold quarter stater of Gallic extraction (attributed to the Nervii) probably dating to the second century BC. Rudd's 'crossed lines with rider' type. Obverse: series of crossed chisel marks. Reverse: horse and rider left, stylised lyre below. C.f ABC p. 29, no. 37. Weight: 1.9g.Provenance: found Rettendon, Essex.

Complete with wooden scabbard covered in black leather which in addition to the usual two small knives contains a selection of four other tools; button hook, spike blade/bradall, screwdriver and chisel. All with Ivory or Bone handles. There is provision for another six items which are missing.

In addition to the usual two knives with white horn handles, this example has a knife, tweezers with spike, button hook, bradall, file, chisel, saw, hook. All tools have black horn handles. There is also a small hide pouch.

'MODEL 94 - 1 OF 1000' LEVER ACTION REPEATING SPORTING CARBINE, serial no. 4435000, for 1979, with blued round 20in. barrel inlaid with gold bands at the breech and muzzle, the side of the barrel signed in gold 'WINCHESTER MODEL 94 30-30 WIN and on the top of the breech 'ONE OF ONE THOUSAND', dove-tailed blade fore-sight, elevating carbine ladder rear-sight, deeply chisel scroll-engraved receiver surrounding a central panel featuring an engraving of the 'Winchester' cowboy on a horse at full gallop on the left hand side and a stag within a background of scrolls on the right, all the panels bordered with gold lines, highly-figured finely chequered walnut straight-hand butt-stock with silvered crescent heel-plate engraved with scrolls and bearing the inlaid gold legend 'ONE OF ONE THOUSAND', engraved and gold-inlaid under-lever, highly-figured finely chequered walnut carbine fore-end with deeply scroll engraved barrel-bands and full-length blued magazine with engraved end-cap, the whole appearing little used, complete with its manufacturers presentation full-length leather-covered storage case and a certificate signed by the engraver stating the limited edition status of the carbineS1 - Sold as a Section 1 Firearm under the 1968 Firearms Act

Frederick Mulhaupt (Kansas, New York, Massachusetts, Missouri, 1871 - 1938) Autumnal Painting of a Covered Bridge titled "Old Covered Bridge, Maine" on stretcher verso. Signed lower left. Provenance: Private Oklahoma City collection. Mulhaupt worked as manager of a newspaper and magazine in Dodge City before moving to Kansas City where he apprenticed to an itinerant painter and enrolled at the Kansas City School of Design. He then moved to Chicago where he attended the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1890s. Mulhaupt stayed in Chicago for many years, eventually becoming an instructor in figure classes at the Art Institute. In 1904 he moved to New York and then spent several years in Paris. He returned to live in New York while spending his summers in Gloucester, MA from 1907. Mulhaupt worked for the WPA painting a mural for the Maplewood School in Gloucester. B.R.C.s. & O.ST J.J.; British War & Victory Medals, impressed named H.D.W. LEWIS. B.R.C. & ST. J. J.; 1911 Coronation Medal, St. John Ambulance Brigade, chisel engraved ASST. COMMR. H. LEWIS. & St. John Service Medal, chisel engraved 4314. COMM. FOR WALES SIR HERBERT D. W. LEWIS K.B.E. PRIORY FOR WALES 1922. Medals mounted as worn. Sir Herbert David William Lewis was born on 25 February 1872, the eldest son of the Reverend David Lewis, Rector of Briton Ferry, and was educated at Rossall School. He served with the British Red Cross and Order of St. John of Jerusalem throughout the Great War from August 1914 as Commissioner for Wales, and represented the Order of St John in France at the Allied Forces Hospital in Boulogne; in addition, he organised St John Hospitals throughout Wales; raised 1,000 men for military hospitals; and formed several Voluntary Aid Detachment units. Appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his War service (London Gazette 7 January 1918), he was promoted to Knight Commander in November 1922, and was additionally created a Knight of Grace of the Order of St. John. He died on 23 January 1931.
