A pair of Galle tin tin glazed heraldic candelabra, late 19th century, each in the form of a rampant lion holding aloft a thistle and turret emblem, raised on a shaped base and with four branch candelabra above, signed Galle, Nancy. Height 76 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Generally both appear to be in predominately good order however as with most tin glaze there are issues with chips. On the right hand lion there is a small fingernail size glaze chip to the crown of his mane. Both Incisors have small chips to the tips. There is a 1 cm glaze rub to a scroll on the armorial. Its right ear has a large chip, glaze chips and 3 smaller glaze chips to its mane on the right hand side. There are two glazed chips to the knuckles on its rear right paw and a further small 1 cm x 5 mm glaze chip to a scroll at the base. There are 3 very small glaze chips to the oval base at the right hand side and the rear. All metalwork appears to be in good order. The left hand lion - Its rear left foot has a small restoration on a centre claw and from this centre claw issues very fine hairline crack which runs to the base. An attempt has been made to cover over this crack but the restoration is now falling off. The restoration only covered the crack alone and there are no pieces missing. There is a tiny glaze chip to the knee of the left rear leg. Whereas the right hand side lion is hollow the left hand side lion has been filled with plaster of Paris and there are signs of overspray/restoration spilling over from the exterior. Both lions are signed Galle, Nancy. Given what may appear to be a long list of faults these are still very impressive looking beasts.

There is gilt rubbing throughout the base but there appear to be no signs of any obvious cracks, chips or restorations.
