Manche Zahlen bewegen sich schneller, andere langsamer. Manche Zahlen scheinen kühler, während andere strahlen. Oft ist die Arbeit vielleicht auch vom Strom genommen und es leuchtet nichts. Der Lauf der Zahlen dient unter anderem als Metapher für Lebenszyklen und spiegelt Miyajimas Auseinandersetzung mit Glaubensfragen, insbesondere dem Buddhismus. Die Philosophie der alten Griechen bietet einen parallelen Diskurs mit dem Fokus auf Fluss und Übergang als Metaphern für den Lebenskreislauf. Die gemeinsam ablaufenden Zahlen als Metapher für die Menschheit könnten auch bedeuten, dass Menschen und andere Lebewesen nicht getrennt voneinander existieren können. Zudem befindet sich die Menschheit im Wandel und jeder Einzelne ändert sich stetig. Auch lassen die Abläufe den ewigen Zyklus von Geburt bis Tod erkennen und zeigen so die Grundstruktur eines Lebens auf. Wenn die Skala von 1-9 das Leben auf einer gemeinschaftlichen, allumfassenden, aber auch singulär betrachteten Ebene aufzeigt, wird schnell klar, dass die Zahl Null keinen Platz in Miyajimas Arbeiten finden kann. Diese steht ganz klar für eine Pause oder einen Nullpunkt, die eine Kluft zwischen den Zählzyklen eröffnen würden. Der Tod ist bspw. ganz einfach ein Zustand wie das Leben und der Punkt bevor das Leben an anderer Stelle wiederbeginnt. Weiter betrachtet verändern sich z.B. Generationen oder auch die Welt an sich in einem Fluss und nicht in klar gesetzten Abschnitten. So ist die Arbeit nicht nur eine Progression, sondern auch eine sichtbare Darstellung der Veränderung innerhalb dieser Progression.
